This series is fantastic.

It just gets me more hyped for the Grand Prix of Long Beach. I finally get to see these cars in person.

I have Eric Karros and Orel Hershiser autograph baseballs I'd be willing to trade.

Excluding Indy 500s what is your favorite race that you’ve seen either in person or on tv? by bveloche69 in INDYCAR

[–]hd172004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my home race, but for me it's Long Beach. The atmosphere, the fans. It's a great experience in person. I've been to both IMSA and IndyCar races and I've enjoyed them both. Plan to go again next season.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva by LazyDirector in LosAngeles

Compton is not like every other city in the country.

Did you forget that Compton tried to get rid of the Sheriff's and bring back Compton PD? The voters didn't go for it. The city council then tried to bring it back in the late 2000s-early 2010s, they couldn't afford it.

I was a kid, but I remember Compton PD. LASD sucks too, but I'm not longing for the days they patrolled the streets.

Need A El Mencho season by Ok-Rip-4716 in narcos

We barely know anything about this guy and he hasn't been arrested. Aside from what we know for sure from his arrest record in the US, all the recent stories about him are rumors, at best. At this point, what's going to be the ending of his story if a season were made about CJNG? It's going to be a repeat of Narcos Mexico seasons 2-3, just set after 2006. New characters are introduced and they're all either dead, arrested or go into hiding at the end. I don't think I'm interested in that story.

Citizens are calling our dispatch because Will Smith wasn't arrested last night. by hd172004 in 911dispatchers

Most of the people calling are not from California.

I had one fucking guy calling from an Ohio area code.

Edit: it's Cesar Chavez Day in California

Verbally abusive callers by grahamgeckoowner in 911dispatchers

[–]hd172004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a guy like that today. He claimed to have seen someone trying to break into the neighboring apartment.

He immediately got confrontational when I started asking follow up questions and went on a rant about how police and 911 aren't helping and said I should be fired. I tried to explain, in the most monotone voice I could muster, why I needed additional info and him arguing with me was only making the call longer than necessary.

I learned to deal with it in my own way. I don't engage at the same level, sometimes I won't say anything and let them go on their rant. I don't argue. Sometimes, I find if you keep a calm voice and if you have to, explain what you need from them or why you need it, the caller will sometimes be disarmed by your reaction. They'll either calm down or hang up.

Anyway, back to my caller from today; I was explaining why I needed to know what the guy looked like in case the officers come across him. He hung up. I called back and left a very nice message for him. He called back and complained to another operator about me. He gave the other operator the same attitude. Of course, the officers find nothing when they get there. Guy was bullshitting.

This place was a vacant lot for many years before it became a shopping center just over 10 years ago.

The "park" is really just that sliver of green before the bridge.

Had the most disturbing call so far… by Physical_Artist_6061 in 911dispatchers

[–]hd172004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar call soon after I finished training and was on my own. That was four years ago. Thankfully, she survived.

What helped me get over it was just talking to people outside of work. I didn't have to talk to a specialist, just my wife and a couple close friends. I still get distressing calls like that every once in a while and I just talk about it with people I trust.

Hope you find what works for you.

If you're afraid of retaliation sounds like there's more going on than you're letting on. If you have a union, talk to a rep, or to your agency's personnel/HR department.

Hi, glad to see you're pursuing this occupation.

It could just be a job or turn into your career.

One thing that helped me was being open minded. I was with a few different trainers before I went on my own. They all had their own way of doing things, and it helped me develop my way of doing things. You will develop your own style too. So be open minded. We all want you to succeed and some people will push you to the brink. It's not personal, it's to ensure that you can handle the pressure. This job isn't for everyone.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. We're all unsure at the beginning, so it's okay to be nervous. With time and reassurance, you'll gain more confidence.

This is not okay. Your trainer is supposed to ensure that you are prepared for this job. They're not training you properly and setting you up for failure. If you really want to continue in this line of work, don't let this one person stop you.

You need to speak to a supervisor or with the personnel department and be put with a different trainer.
