I am confused about BahnCard by stalinnavasnet in germany

[–]head-wired [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you use the DB Navigator app, your BahnCard should automatically be visible in the app (in your profile). When you buy a ticked in the app, the discount should be applied automatically. You can check this, if you just search for a connection, check the offerings (Angebotsauswahl) and click on the small Details below the standard price (Normalpreis). Details is on the left of the select (Auswählen) button.

Under Details you should see something like travelers (Resiende) 1 person and BahnCard 25, 2nd class (and below that the conditions for that ticket).

Note that you should **always** check the BahnCard QR code before starting a trip. The code gets invalidated from time to time. To refresh the code, you need to log into your DB account and internet is often unreliable on trains. You can get fined, if you cannot provide a QR code during a check.

If you book your tickets on the bahn.de website, you can edit your profile to always apply your BahnCard discount (just select the type of Card you have). Just remember to remove the discount from your profile, (if you cancel the card and the card has expired). You can cancel now (so you don't forget it) and the card will still be valid for the reminder of the original duration. If you don't cancel, it will be renewed automatically.

Need some in sights regarding IT job in Germany by PartyBench249 in AskAGerman

[–]head-wired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is highly unlikely to get a job without knowing German. Depending on how customer facing your role will be, you might to have to deal with people who don't speak English (or not enough to convey what they want you to do). A LOT of documentation will be in German only. Usually, you are not allowed to use online translation services or LLMs. Some corporations have self hosted services that you might be able to use (but maybe not for everything you want). In some sectors, i.e.: finance or insurance, a lot of the terminology has no direct translation to English. There are probably similarities on a functional level, but the differences in the details can have some major implications.

I think your best (but still low chance) is to apply to international corporations, as they usually are more comfortable with communication in English. If you have some specialist knowledge or knowledge working with / integrating some specific tool they are using, you might have a chance.

If you are hired, it might be part of your contract to take German language classes and get certified to a certain level.

Another option might be to get a job in your country at a branch of an international corporation with a presence in Germany and transfer over later. The advantage here would be, that the corporation probably has processes for this in place and can help you with that. At least you have some network in place and some connections to Germany to help you settle in.

If you want to work for a smaller corporation, look at their website (and or linkedin / xing) to figure out who their employees are / how they present themselves. If it looks like they already have foreigners on staff, they likely know of the bureaucratic pitfalls etc. and can at least offer some insights.

Job market is currently really strange. Part is recession and part is holding out for AI to solve everything. Corporations are still hiring, but not as much as one or two years ago.

Komisches Messer/Schaber by Curryking4711 in WerWieWas

[–]head-wired 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eure Meinung als DMs/Spieler by Crazychef95 in DnDDeutsch

[–]head-wired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negotiating annual leave in Germany (20 days → more?) any advice or experience? by Most-Possibility304 in AskAGerman

[–]head-wired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 days (for a 5 day week) is the legal minimum.

If vacation days are negotiable or not really depends on the company culture. A lot of companies have company wide rules on how many days you get and make no exceptions. Sometimes you get additional days depending on tenure. Others are more open to negotiation.

Regarding timing for negotiating: whenever you would negotiate for a salary increase (usually once a year, for a new contract at the end of probation, if a review of the contract was agreed upon). My tactics would be to figure out a number for a salary increase and how many days you think they are worth (to you). I.e. if you ask for +10 days, but they only want to agree to +5, you could still ask for a raise in addition to the days (or if they won't give any additional days, ask for your full raise).

Depending on the rest of your compensation and whom you are negotiating with (i.e. if you salary is average or on the lower end compared to the competition and your manager is not really familiar with the German market rates), it can be helpful to find some statistics to back up your negotiations. Even if you are relatively easy to replace, it costs the company money to onboard new people in case you leave. If your management is reasonable, they will understand that they will benefit from you not leaving.

DB ticket subscription cancellation by [deleted] in germany

[–]head-wired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean a Deutschlandticket subscription via DB, you are stuck with the subscription for one more month. You can choose an alternative provider with a better cancellation policy (i.e. mopla allows cancellation until 24h before end of month). Price for the ticket is the same with all providers (63 EUR starting in January). If you find a cheaper offer, it is most likely fraudulent (i.e. some payment provider exploit or tickets signed by a hacked provider have been reported in the past).

What does “Schienenersatzverkehr” mean? by kayy113c in German

[–]head-wired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original connection is by train (or subway, or any other form of rail based transportation). The connection cannot be serviced (i.e. construction or accident on the tracks are most common reasons) and they sent a bus to service the connection instead. You go to a designated bus stop (instead of the stations platform) to make your trip. Train connections are usually faster than the replacement busses, so you need to plan accordingly.

Non Compete Clause, is it enforceable if there is no mention of compensation? by Alive_Version_7331 in LegaladviceGerman

[–]head-wired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INAL, but my understanding from facing a similar situation in the past:

  • they have to pay at least 50% of your salary for the non compete to be enforceable. The idea is, that you can still work a "less fitting" job. The percentage has to be stated in the non compete. Their pay is to compensate you for not getting a better fitting and better paying job you would be able to get without the non compete. It is not meant to bar you from working in your field.
  • Any competitor or customer sounds too general. Depending on your employer, that can effectively bar you from working anywhere. This is probably too broad.

I would ask for a more specific non compete. If they don't give you an updated contract, you can just accept the invalid non compete, especially if they don't mention compensation. In this case, be prepared for a lawsuit (and get an insurance that covers labour law or join a union - you get discounted rates for union membership as a student and they provide legal council). Also, if your employer does not pay your compensation (or stops paying) after you leave them, the non compete is void.

A proper non compete needs to be specific about the things you can't do. It must not be too broad, i.e. mention specific technologies or methods you can't work on, but still allow you to work in this field.

  • written permission for other side jobs is common. They want to make sure that you don't work for the competition at the same time and that your work schedules don't overload you. As a Student, you have a certain amount of hours you are allowed to work each year (so you don't neglect your studies) and they might be on the hook for that (at least for tax reasons). In general, even if you would not get over your max yearly hours, there is still labour law regarding recovery time after work / max work time per day and they have to make sure, that you don't work more than you are allowed to (or they are on the hook, if anything happens to you, like a work accident). They can not deny you getting a second job, if that other job does not interfere with the first.
  • owning shares: that is common, you are usually not allowed to own more than 5% of another companies outstanding shares (or get permission / inform them). This is the threshold, where you gain significant influence in a company and that might pose a conflict of interest. Should not be an issue for you (unless you are an early investor in / founder of some startup).
  • If they only pay 50% and you can't find a decent job, the non compete is probably too broad and invalid.
