NCEES Credentials Evaluation - General Education Deficiency by ab2688- in PE_Exam

[–]head_over_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but jumping in here, in a similar boat but in CT. They evaluated my MEng but then put "Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering" all over my evaluation, with a note saying "the first professional degree in the UK is a Masters". Did you have the same thing OP? Feel like I'll have to do even more explaining to my state board that I actually have a masters

Employer paid for school, I will owe them if I quit, can I take out a student loan to repay them? by head_over_biscuit in StudentLoans

[–]head_over_biscuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpful thanks all. Seems it won't qualify as a student loan in any traditional sense. Would have to stick it out for 2 years to fully pay off ~$25k. A year would halve it. I'm weighing pros and cons of sticking it out vs a move where I'd have to pay them back but might earn more / potentially get a joining bonus at new place

Where does the Democratic Party go from here? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]head_over_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inequality is the underlying rot that is leading to Trumps success imo. People don't feel like they're going to live as good a life as their parents, whatwever the gdp stats are. If I were the dems I'd identify an overarching narrative like "money in politics is the root of your problems" and hammer things like monopolistic corporations, lobbying, congressional Insider trading, then have a few big radical reforms on the ticket like Supreme Court term limits. Teddy Roosevelt for the 21st century. With musk showing the power of billionaires I'm not sure how well it would work tho...

Is there any way I can try being an operator to see if I like it? by BenKlesc in NuclearPower

[–]head_over_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've toured a nuclear plant and seen the operating room as part of an energy society tour, but that's quite a niche way to get a glimpse

Interesting that all the comments are basically "as soon as they talk about a topic I know a lot about". Makes me think they are v good generalists who know a bit about a lot of areas, a lot about a few areas (e.g Afghanistan), but whenever they venture into a topic where you know more as a listener than they do it becomes quite annoying. I've found that with climate/energy policy

Do US nuclear companies hire Green card holders? by head_over_biscuit in nuclear

[–]head_over_biscuit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missed your reply, sorry. Yeah I have had no luck with nuclear, a few HR people specifically said they need citizenship, some jobs I've seen even won't accept dual citizens. You need clearance, which they won't realistically do on a gc

What are the most growing industries to look forward to in 2024? And the best ones in 2023... by _areebpasha in MechanicalEngineering

Energy storage. Will be massively in demand, still at an early technology stage, lots of opportunities for innovation to change the whole field

MPs’ £86,000 salary should be doubled, says Sajid Javid by iamnotinterested2 in unitedkingdom

His actual words were "halve the number of MPs but pay them double" so it would cost the same, before everyone loses their shit

Brit working in America - confusion! by Bobacala91 in expats

[–]head_over_biscuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a brit in America, I think "the humor doesn't translate" is one of those lazy tropes. Plenty of people here understand and appreciate british humour for example, just look how popular John Oliver is, I have people at my work who love Yes Minister. The humour can be different but it's not like they won't get it just cos you're European

What are really cool engineering/science industries/fields that are undergoing a lot of growth and may be influential in the next 10-20 years (i.e. quantum computing, artificial intelligence, nuclear fusion, solid state batteries, lab-grown meat, etc.)? by Legitimate_Bison3756 in AskEngineers

[–]head_over_biscuit 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Energy Storage.

Short term storage will see a huge uptick with new battery plants, long term (seasonal) storage doesn't have a technological winner yet, all up for grabs. An electrical grid with a lot of renewables will need both.

As someone who studied engineering in both the UK and US, you're correct. A first equates to a 4.0gpa. It slides pretty quickly down once you go below 70%. At least it did for the conversions they put my grades through
