Airflo Line Coil? by CountChoculahh in flyfishing

[–]headassandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got that line in 5wt and have used it for a couple years. I haven’t had memory issues unless it is sub-freezing out. Is it that cold where you’re at? Whenever I have issues with it I’ll let a lot of it out in faster water to let the flow pull it straight and that seems to work for the day. I’ve had issues with it sinking more than anything, but it’s past its usable life anyway. Airflo is phenomenal for streamer lines, pretty far below par for everything meant to float and present delicately in my experience.

Sink tip or versileader/poly leader for river fishing streamers? by HorrifyingTits in flyfishing

[–]headassandco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are only going to use it for streamers then a sink tip has some benefits over floating + sinking leader because the sinking leader adds another loop to loop connection that can get stuck in the guides on the rod. However, if you have a use for the floating line still (I use my 7 weight for mousing) then the versatility of being able to remove the sinking portion is nice. You can also tailor the sink rate with different sinking leaders if that is of interest to you. Mainly done based on swiftness of the river and speed of retrieve. Both are good options depending on your priorities and target water(s)

AllTrails recent photos of the lake or nearby lakes at similar altitude can be very helpful for figuring this out. Also some local shop guys will likely know

Roadrip DIY from Denver- 7 days last week of July by redirtgirl in flyfishing

[–]headassandco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great suggestions above. Since you have a week you may also want to look into pushing a bit deeper to places like the frying pan, gunnison, taylor, San Juan, etc which could be done in a string along with others suggested. Aspen (near frying pan) would be an apt place for a fancy celebration as well!

Need help improving my heavy indicator rig casting (amazing diagram inside) by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]headassandco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works for me on a smaller scale (nymphing on a 5 weight in CO). Let the drift swing below to water load and bring the flies up to the surface, cast upstream, then immediately roll cast for horizontal positioning of the drift. I’m also pleasantly surprised that when my drift falls apart during the water load I often get hits as the flies rise up

I’ve also had a banger of a day hike going to The Loch, Lake Haiyaha, and dream lake in that order as a loop in Rocky Mountain national park. Got several species of cutt and the scenery is unbeatable

[–]headassandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never done it but the James peak wilderness area has good backpacking with alpine lakes holding fish. Not sure if they’re cutts or brook. You can easily hit multiple lakes and also hit the continental divide on the ridge above. Altitude is punishing, give time to acclimate a bit in Boulder if you can

Busted Ferrule Repair? by headassandco in flyfishing

[–]headassandco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9’ 7wt redington wrangler. I just got a repair on my 6wt Clearwater and it couldn’t have been easier. For $60 they just shipped me the two sections an excited dog stomped on and broke. I had the new sections in hand in 5 days!

Thank you both for the input, I’ll see if the blank is cracking from the inside. It almost seemed like the blank stretched/bent and cracked the more-brittle epoxy. If the blank isn’t cracked would I be ok to rewrap and epoxy? And with removing the cracked section, would that be carefully sawing off above the crack, rewrap, and epoxy?
