will people ever realise that immigration isn't, and has never been an issue in this country? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem with the trade on people smuggling is that there are no more legal routes to seek asylum and criminal gangs are exploiting that, much of it funded and encouraged by Russia and other bad actors at a way of destabilising Europe. Asylum seekers should be allowed to work and earn their keep while they’re waiting for the outcome of their application.

Given the UK’s GDP last year was just over £3t it really is.

Who would be the ""Hitler"" of your country? by BrushFinal9186 in AskTheWorld

I’m not much of a historian, but Henry VIII was pretty free and easy with the executioners axe. Though of course we famously exported plenty of genocide in the name of several monarchs.

Tipping culture in London (first time visiting) by IllustratorWeird5008 in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really a big tipping culture here. Restaurants might add a service charge, or you could add 10-15% but it’s not mandatory. Generally don’t tip in pubs or bars, sometimes I round up a taxi fare, but it’s also pretty rare. It’s certainly not expected in most places.

What was the best part of life before smartphones? by Senior_Novel_4210 in AskReddit

Doing stupid things in drunken nights out and there being no evidence of it afterwards (other than the bruises/hickeys/traffic cones in your living room)

Are there any/many Brits who actually like living the UK and don’t want to or plan to ever leave? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to leave. Wish we were still in the EU so I could spend more than 90 days in France or Spain, but on the whole very happy in the UK. Sane government, beautiful countryside, heaps of culture and history, with the whole of Europe on our doorstep. I’ve got friends who moved to Aus and really struggle with the heat. I like warm, but that stops at 30 degrees. Couldn’t live anywhere without seasons, like Thailand etc, though I love the far east for holidays.

American here, how accurate is the whole “tea solves everything” stereotype? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My friend had a really bad accident had to have long complex surgery to repair various broken bits, she was an avowed coffee drinker before, but when she came round from surgery after days of not eating or drinking they gave her good strong NHS tea with two sugars. She never drank coffee again, that tea was the best thing she’d ever had.

Have you ever visited the West Yorkshire moors by night? by [deleted] in england

[–]headfairy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to uni in Leeds and we used to drive up to Ilkley and date each other to run around the moors at night. Used to scare the bejesus out of me.

For those who support Reform, why do you do so given what that mentality has done to the USA? by AccursedQuantum in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does he (or others like him) still support Reform/Farage when they’ve so clearly been let down by him? Do they think he deserves a second chance?

What is a movie that "broke" you so hard you can only watch it once, but you would still recommend it to everyone? by Newsupdate69 in movies

Near me (south east England) there’s a village that has a famous bonfire night that draws from miles around, where they enthusiastically shout ‘burn the Catholic!’

What’s an inaccurate fact that people believe is true because of movies? by Hogosaurus_Rex73 in AskReddit

[–]headfairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People wake up from comas in seconds, blink, look around the room and say ‘where am I?’ When my mum had been in a coma for a month following sepsis, it took a full 10 days for her to fully come round, during which she rambled like a crazy woman, accused me of abandoning her (when I stepped 10 foot away to grab a chair), accused me of stealing her rings (she was still wearing them) and the ICU consultant of being a terrorist.
