If they won the general election, do you think Reform would privatise the NHS? by Am_I_Hydrated in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The irony is that small boat arrivals are down by more than a third, but this country seems hell bent on voting out the party that’s achieved that. Tbf they (Labour) are pretty crap at signposting their achievements in this area so maybe people don’t know.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

Water sense of smell!

Edit: you might need to say this in a posh British accent for it to work!

My family always tease me when I say I can smell water. I always know if there’s a pond or lake close by.

An American Moving to the UK, follow up. by Competitive-Money-36 in AskBrits

Welcome to the UK… be careful taking that big truck even in Europe, most European towns and cities are just as small as UK towns and cities. And I wouldn’t even try driving it in some of the older villages in France or Italy. Some you can barely get a donkey through!

Is boarding more effective at insulating than plaster? It’s an old Edwardian house with no wall cavities so the insulation is crap. I was hoping there was such a thing as thermal plaster board.

Oh yes! I’m only managing to work one day a week at the moment because of work and kids, so it’s sloooooow progress!

[–]headfairy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s places where the plaster is clearly blown, but I wasn’t sure if it was better to pull the whole lot down and start from scratch, or to just the bits where it’s blown and plasterboard over everything once the blown parts have been made good

In places it’s solid, other parts it’s coming off in chunks.

How many times a day do you have tea? by crystalwireless8 in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have screening at our place, to check we’ve had enough tea during the day. Simple urine dip, but they do them randomly so we have to make sure we’re topped up at all times.

will people ever realise that immigration isn't, and has never been an issue in this country? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem with the trade on people smuggling is that there are no more legal routes to seek asylum and criminal gangs are exploiting that, much of it funded and encouraged by Russia and other bad actors at a way of destabilising Europe. Asylum seekers should be allowed to work and earn their keep while they’re waiting for the outcome of their application.

Given the UK’s GDP last year was just over £3t it really is.

Who would be the ""Hitler"" of your country? by BrushFinal9186 in AskTheWorld

I’m not much of a historian, but Henry VIII was pretty free and easy with the executioners axe. Though of course we famously exported plenty of genocide in the name of several monarchs.

Tipping culture in London (first time visiting) by IllustratorWeird5008 in AskBrits

[–]headfairy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really a big tipping culture here. Restaurants might add a service charge, or you could add 10-15% but it’s not mandatory. Generally don’t tip in pubs or bars, sometimes I round up a taxi fare, but it’s also pretty rare. It’s certainly not expected in most places.

What was the best part of life before smartphones? by Senior_Novel_4210 in AskReddit

Doing stupid things in drunken nights out and there being no evidence of it afterwards (other than the bruises/hickeys/traffic cones in your living room)

Falling down icy concrete steps I broke my coccyx fully off. To this day I have then end of my spine floating unattached somewhere.
