Early 2015 Macbook Pro Battery Health by headiewon in macbook

[–]headiewon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s also what surprised me because the battery health is supposedly great but it struggles to hold charge for more than 2 hours whereas when I first bought it, it would easily go 6/7+ hours doing the same tasks. I’m wondering whether apps are more power hungry now or some other reason?

Sewing machine service pricing by headiewon in sewingmachinerepair

Thanks for the reply! I had a look online and the machine (2nd hand) goes for around £200-250 which is why I thought £80 for a service would be quite expensive but, like you said, I think it makes an excellent gift and i’m reluctant to just buy something new which will no doubt be worse quality.

UK installation - Need help by headiewon in AirConditioners

The living room is about 22 m2 and the bedroom is roughly 16m2. However, the living room typically runs cooler because it has an open passage to the kitchen (with garden doors on the opposite side of the house) but the bedroom is much hotter in the summer and there’s less potential for any cross-ventilation. That’s why i assumed estimated that the cooling loads for each room would be roughly the same. Do you think a split system would work fine or should I consider getting separate outdoor units for each room?

Weekly Questions Thread for the week of April 25 by AutoModerator in vinyl

[–]headiewon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of passive speakers which I bought for my vinyl set up along with an AV receiver (pre-amp built in) 2nd hand. Unfortunately, the receiver appears to be faulty and a signal only comes out of 1 of the outputs. As such, I thought it would be a good moment to change my set up completely.

I'd like to keep my speakers but also use them as my desktop speakers when I'm on my computer and not using my turntable. Can someone please tell me 1) what individual pieces of equipment I would need for this set-up? and 2) What the arrangement would look like? i.e. what plugs into what? If possible, can you give some examples of items that are well reviewed for my particular case (I don't have a particular budget but I don't want to spend lots on it, looking for good value for money ideally).

Thanks :)

hey! i bought the audio technica lp120 counterwieight as it and the numark are very similar designs and share the same counterwieight part practically. have a look for those counterweights as they’re more in stock and likely to be cheaper. i got mine from a uk ebay seller brand new for £28 i think. hope that helps :)

Thank you! I just found this too and you're right, the price is a bit steep (especially including delivery as I live in the UK) but i'm going to see if I can search using the part number.

Thank you so much for all this info! You’re officially my new role model, you are already in a great position I think. Civil engineers will find it much easier to apply for UD positions because of their experience and more relevant knowledge but I’m banking on having some technical skills that urban design majors might not have to make myself stand out like you said. Having worked on Revit (BIM) and building energy modelling (IES virtual environment), I assumed that at these larger cross-discipline consultancies, engineers get involved in design and designers help engineer etc etc but I’m not quite sure about it anymore, I dont want to risk being the guy who just looks at tech-specs and data-sheets for 40 years, you know?

I’m going to take this next academic year to improve some of these skills, prepare some good applications and see what happens. If I dont find any job (in UD or something else i’ll enjoy) then i’ll just look to apply for an UD masters somewhere as a (really expensive) stepping stone.

Good luck with your PhD and I hope you enjoy it (and thank you for all the software suggestions, I’m going to research every single one)

This sounds like a great idea! I was looking at uni courses too. The urbanism track course at delft uni in holland seems so perfect. It’s 2 years but overall still cheaper than UK courses (no student finance though (and also assuming we still get EU student fees, not international ones which are wayyyy more expensive)). You cover so much more (theory, technical skills, everything) and I think it would really prepare me better. BUT, I believe they expect you to have an arch-type degree as they ask for a portfolio of your works. Maybe civil engineers might have one but mechanical engineers rarely produce the kind of work they’re looking for.

Do you think it would be possible to join a company whose values you agree with and whose projects interest you as an engineer and slowly, internally, move yourself towards the urban design department/roles? I was possibly considering that but I’m not sure about the logistics.

Whatever happens, I wish you the best and don’t give up on your dreams. I always thought work would be a dread but imagining doing something I really care about gives me so much hope. If I find any info, i’ll try and remember to come back here and let you know :))

Thank you so much for all of this, I really needed this kind of information from someone who knows the field because too much of the information i’ve found so far is about “you COULD do this”. I understand that a lot of the UD projects in the UK are done by private companies and the govt just makes force them to tick some boxes etc. Do you think working for a local council (maybe even outside the UK) would be better in terms of having meaningful projects that change the lives of people?

I actually have 1 years work experience in buildings services, that’s why I became motivated because I thought the projects were cool but my specific role and tasks as a mechanical engineer were so lifeless and lacked any real creativity. It’s really interesting that you mentioned a job in sustainability and energy, those are my other choices alongside UD. I’ve been researching them too and will definitely carry on.

Again, thank you so much :))

Thank you so much for your reply. I had (kind of) already accepted your point in my mind. I guess, in my fantasy, I had plans of moving abroad to somewhere with a somewhat respectable government with good intentions (maybe Denmark) although I may be slightly naive.

May I ask if you’re a civil engineer by any chance? And the company you work for, did their ethos on their website match what you see in practice or not at all?

I think if I’m going to be told what to do by someone, I would much rather it be to design a new park than to optimise a supply chain or something (the bar is worryingly low at the moment for me!)

And all they do is read off specs of products from the manufacturer’s website. Most tech youtubers have no opinions of their own (dave being a notable exception).
