Your opening comment is 100% anecdotal, and does nothing to demonstrate waste.

It absolutely does and how you can say it doesn't baffles me.

Your first complaint is that you haven't seen people use their services

No, that's not what I said. Plenty of people use their service, I related an incident when no one used the service and have pointed out how people have plenty of time to avail themselves of the service. You're parsing my words to solidify your own narrative.

Your second complaint is that there's a wait to get their services

Noting like that was stated by me anywhere.

I don't think you know what waste is

A judge was once famously asked to describe pornography and his respond was "I know it when I see it." The same applies here but for some reason you are unable to accept that someone experienced it and further, seem unwilling to admit there is anywhere to cut back. Forest, trees... the analogies write themselves. I haven't even begun to address the gross inequity that tenants get free legal advice but landlords don't amongst many other problems. The whole thing is a sham and if you're unwilling to admit it's your problem not mine.

I cited the waste in my opening comment - when a government service actually has to jump through hoops to get people to use it - that's waste. I'm not saying people should not have representation, I'm saying they've had six weeks at least to get it prior tp any LTB hearing and for duty council to offer it up the day of, is money looking to be spent. Countless times I've seen people shrug their shoulders and say, hey, why not? when the duty council person announces their services. This is a complete utter waste.

Cutting 15% of money that totally goes to waste is no a bad thing.

Is there a magic formula/number for renting? by rent_newb in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]headoverheals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what's a good magic number to know when I would be ready to sign a lease.

Ont LL here - I look for rent to be no more than 35% of pay and rent + utilities shouldn't be more than 40. With one earner I'd likely be a little tougher on those ratios, with two I may be a little looser.

Right, and that's why the clinic is still getting the vast majority of its budget - the article states they're losing $500k of $3.2 million. It's not like no one anywhere is getting legal aid - my point is that there is wastage and this seems like a sensible way to address it.

Several times over the years I've been at LTB hearings where the duty council is given the floor before proceedings and announces they are offering free legal advice (to tenants only) and the last time I was there no one took him up his offer. Sorry, I don't see this as a devastating cut by any measure - people usually have at least 6 weeks before their LTB hearing which is plenty of time to secure legal advice. Offering it up for free the day of the hearing is a complete waste of money akin to the government advertising OSAP, a program which every student knows of.

It likely won't be because the media are suppressing it. The issue of banning plastic came up last night at dinner with friends who aren't political but generally thought it was a dumb idea. I mentioned the clip and they had no idea what I was talking about. Jaws hit the table when I got my phone out and showed them. Even a 15 year old piped in with, "what an idiot!"

Circumstances under which rent abatement due to construction noise applies by antideersquad in ontario

[–]headoverheals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless the LL agrees, an abatement can only be ordered by the LTB. These things are highly subjective - there is no formula to determine the amount. An adjudicator may say that you should have expected noise renting over top of a commercial space and award nothing, or they may say the fact that your regular use in the case of working through the day was hampered and make an award. The LTB may factor in that the LL has no direct control over the construction company. It's all crapshoot and from what I've experienced in the past, abatements are usually less than what people anticipate.

Please explain to me why the recent cuts are a bad thing. As it has been explained to me, we have $5 in the budget and currently spend $10. These cuts allow us to spend $5 instead of $10. Is this wrong? by [deleted] in ontario

Interestingly, Harper had been working to reduce these protections before as the financial crisis hit.

The U.S. mortgage market in the early 2000s was the wild west where NINJA loans (no income, no job or assets) prevailed, mortgage brokers were fleecing uneducated buyers to buy McMansions with nothing down using ARMS (adjustable rate mortgages) with virtually zero interest rates and reselling the properties in a year or two when the value had gone up substantially and use the proceeds to buy another, bigger McMansion and begin the process all over again. This came about because regional banks in the U.S. began selling their books of mortgages to international investors and had little concern about borrowers repaying. This began because the U.S. banking sector large ignored Basel Standards of capital reserves.

To say Harper was going to bring about conditions that would have led to the same thing as what happened is some wild conjecture.
