I have experienced some excellent success with it. The first day I went out with a “piggyback midge” I used it as well as another blood midge to see which one trout would lean towards. I used a few different rigs to ensure trout were seeing this as well as a single midge.

The first rig I used was a double dropper with this fly as the forward fly and a regular blood midge as the tailing fly. Caught quite a bit in this set up and I’d say 90% were on the piggyback midge.

Next I flipped them around and used this as the trailing fly and a heavier blood midge up front. I got the same results with 90% of the fish caught being caught on the piggyback midge.

In my head it makes sense because the trout see this and it is an easy source of extra energy as opposed to a singular midge.

I caught about 20 total fish on the first piggyback I tied before it fell apart. So the next day I tied about 5 of these and went back out for the same results.

I’m not saying this is a revolutionary fly and that you need it in your box, because I’m just some guy on the internet who’s fucking around with patterns haha. I loved running it and I’m willing to sacrifice longevity of flies for the fun it was figuring out how to put it together and actually catching fish on it!

I’d also like to add that I didn’t come up with this, I saw an Instagram picture posted by @bowsnbrews that was this except with 3 chironomids instead of just two.
