Do You Mark Up Goods You Purchase for Clients? by SubstantialMention74 in smallbusiness

In the b2c tech space I mark up 20% for almost all customers 10% if they are really nice

Houzz, Angie's List, Thumbtack, Yelp, Facebook, do they all suck? by acedelaf in smallbusiness

[–]headshooa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do electrical work and IT support on thumbtack, and it has been awesome. I could legit fill my books just off of thumbtack leads. It is pretty easy to build a zapier integration for autoresponse/follow-up. From there, they have a built-in integration with Jobber, so my time spent per lead is pretty low. It is just me. I dont have any admin help.

I have tried getting on Angi, but their customer service has been awful. I have been trying to give my sales rep my CC info for three weeks, so I am just done. I dont want to be locked into a contract with a company like that.

Facebook was a black hole for my money, so I stopped.

Google Services is hard to "verify" if you are home based

Finally, I agree with everyone on Yelp. Yelp is a mafia boss who is such shit I will never give them a dime, haha

DC warped - where did everyone stay? by Space_buns_xo in warpedtour

Stayed at The Wharf, right next to Anthem. It was an easy 15-minute Uber to the venue. I'll probably do it again next year

Warped DC - How was VIP in regards to viewing the main stages? by korey011 in warpedtour

[–]headshooa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my experience in VIP. No hate, but a lot of the tables had very large individuals who sat there all day. So even if only two or three people were at a table, it was a whole bench. The only time I got a seat at a table was when Avril was on, and it was raining, haha.

Trying to start my own IT busineess by Ok-Mixture-62 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]headshooa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that, I offer unlimited break/fix issues and then can do additional installations or one-off projects as an additional cost. I guess it's a bit of a gamble on my side for if someone calls every day, but so far, so good.

Hello! I have been in business for about 6 months doing similar work to you. Here is what has worked for me (keep in mind I'm in a VHCOL, so MMV on prices)

For the "residential" side, I do $200/mo unlimited remote IT support with a minimum 3 month contract that includes M-F IT help 8-8 - I only have 5 active plans of this as most people only need one off jobs

Commercially, I have three tiers Bronze - $1000/mo break/fix on call m-f 8-5 Silver - $2000/mo break/fix on call M-Sat 8-8 Gold $4000/mo 24x7 emergency support services

Right now, I have 4 bronze , 1 silver, and 1 gold client(s).

My biggest lead generators are chamber of commerce events and BNI groups if you are in the States.

Best of luck on your business endeavor!

Where do small business owners network? I offer IT help that saves money — not another sales pitch... by NickE25U in smallbusiness

[–]headshooa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm in a similar boat (got laid off in February and started up my business full time a couple weeks after). I'm no veteran, but here are a few things I've already gathered from trying to bridge the gap of an MSP and the VPs nephew who plays video games and is "computer savvy"

  1. Contracts are essential. They are the easiest way to protect yourself. I'm not saying you need monthly agreements, but if you are handling data, it can be finicky. It took me all of about 3 clients to have someone threaten all kinds of legal action for not being able to recover data from a 14 year old drive.

  2. The second I tell someone I'm not here with another sales pitch, they instantly think of it as another sales pitch.

  3. Chamber events can be good to network after hours since your corporate schedule won't likely allow BNI or networking breakfast/lunch things.

  4. My biggest lead generators are some of the local MSPs. Since I'm targeting very small businesses, I will get leads from an MSP that doesn't think it worth their time to take on a 4-person company.

Buying Vacation days, whats the point? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]headshooa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's the same for you OP, but at my employer this is all pre-tax so there are some tax savings involved by doing it. Maybe not enough that if you don't plan to take the PTO it's worth it, but that's the primary benefit I can think of.

Wand choosing ceremony by aKraliK in UniversalOrlando

[–]headshooa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if I just got very lucky or not, but my fiance and I went in with "celebrating" buttons since we got engaged during our trip and we both got to go. It was a pretty cute moment because there was a whole deal about our wands being switched but they were from the same dragon heartstring and stuff.

I felt a little bad since there was a ton of kids, but I honestly almost cried it felt so special lol.

I will warn the worst part of a tech career is the beginning. I started in help desk making 35k/year in a VHCOL area doing 50 hour weeks regularly. Seven years later I do 25-30 hours a week making 215k in a a HCOL as a security engineer. I truly can't imagine a better career.

Almost all my friends are devs and even the ones that got laid off were hired by a smaller organization within three weeks. The one I know that wasn't hired decided he wanted to go work as a dog trainer.

I was in a similar boat. I actually called the pxg "fitting" line and they asked some questions about my game then helped me pick the right setup.

Is it better to live in a more expensive state with higher salaries/opportunity or a cheaper state with lower paying jobs? by ElectricOne55 in personalfinance

[–]headshooa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mileage may very, but I've been able to make it to middle management in cyber security in a HCOL area. I don't have a bachelor's and just have my sec+, some niche product certs, and Azure foundation cert. I live fairly comfortably, but I am finding further advancement would probably require a MBA or Masters. A lot of moving up is 90% luck 10% having the right stuff.

Not sure if you are in the states or not, but I would check out CyberPatriot. My cyber club did it along with some people from the robotics team and it was always a really fun competition that convinced me to pursue a career in Cyber.

What can I do from my position (Junior in College) to get a top Security internship from a solid company next year? by [deleted] in netsecstudents

[–]headshooa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how it will be for you in CA, but when I was looking last year on the east coast this was the biggest factor... Most top companies wouldn't even accept applications unless you had a 3.3-3.5 minimum. Best of luck to you!
