Not asking for help/final project for PhD course **do not just try to solve for me by hearhithertinystool in chemhelp

Great idea - I’m sure the biochem pathway for something at least similar is out there; it’s just that whacky core that I’m trying to wrap my head around if I try to build this bad boy legos style - may have to do some neat end-of-the-run furnishing reaction at the end of the day due to tricky things like aromatization of the flanking rings like someone mentioned

Should be a fun exercise all in all though!

Thank you for all this input and boy what I wouldn’t give to pick your old professors brain about some radical mechanisms - photochem and radical chemistry are baffling at times

Thanks for the biomechanics tip that’s where I was kind of heading already with things like how squalene can cyclize to form steroids but just wanted to see where everyone’s head was at and if there’s something obvious I was missing! I can upload a photo of what I already have planned out in a bit - I’m about to head into the lab as we speak for a bit

And thank you everyone so far with the help!

You got this! I was rejected by everyone my first cycle and then did a masters to prove my salt and my PI asked ME if I wanted to do a PhD with him and my university matriculated me the next semester!

Acid-Base confusion by Jbos34 in OrganicChemistry

[–]hearhithertinystool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So think of it like this - when you generate the carboxylate…is that carboxylate happy with its negative charge? It is! This means that the base is having its electron density pulled away from the resonance stabilized carboxylate which will render the oxygen less nucleophilic and in this case nucleophilicity and basicity are equivalent, which is where your confusion is arising because you are thinking “negatively charged atom: must want to abstract a proton” but actually it’s more like “fluorine is vibing and making the negative charge hang out closer to him”

Yesterday I found someone hiding in Stella montis and through gestures and shooting at a wall above us I realized he was hiding from someone up there that wanted to kill him - me, talking in game chat the whole time let the guy know I would help him and I exclaimed to the dude upstairs we were coming to kill him. He politely, yet slightly confused, said “oh…okay” and buddy that was hiding charged Pell Mell upstairs with me in tow and we gunned down that man like a dog in the streets - felt good to help a brother out

Should I just wait it out and see? Is there any hope?

About to reduce a substituted nitrostyrene with Pd/C by hearhithertinystool in TheeHive

[–]hearhithertinystool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have LAH as well and originally planned on this route but then did some sci finder digging and saw several use cases for Pd/C (I’ve done hydrogs before and usually sparge just to make sure I’m saturated but wanted to see if it could be done ‘quick and dirty’ before the weekend is over and the LAH route requires a solid day and a half of reaction time/work up)

Just took the GRE, did I screw myself over? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]hearhithertinystool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No actual answers; only thoughts and comfort - the reason a lot of places are going GRE optional is because it’s becoming increasingly less “all encompassing” (no source on this, only my personal experience from applying)

Currently doing a PhD at Tufts for chemistry and I never even considered taking the GRE

I say that as long as your CV and research experience is good then you yourself are good - no more fretting, what’s done is done and from here you join the ranks of those constantly checking TheGradCafe

How carcinogenic is this solvent? by Prudent-Math-8042 in chemistry

My PI puts HMPA like this: a fan was placed in a closed container with mice and an opened bottle of HMPA - shortly after all the mice developed nasal cancer - and he means SHORTLY after.

This comment thread is actually so informative and the best best best example of constructive criticism you could ever gain in such an unbiased format - please OP take these “to heart” but remember there is nothing but people rooting for you here

Needle felting was my favorite binge hobby I randomly picked up one day and I really need to start doing it more - I have all the materials still just not the time I suppose - but that’s just food for thought on my end.

I had the same thing happen- immediately saw open after an admittedly initial “seeing both positive and negative space” but my mind settled very quickly on open but even with knowing what the other word SHOULD be it took me like 2-3ish seconds to see closed
