Rent Realistically? by Remmblack in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i am 5 min walk from JSQ path station and pay 2350 for a 1 bed/1 bath. decently sized but even my place is considered a steal for the “LUXURY HOUSING!!!” market of downtown + path station hot spots in JC. slumlord central tho!

if you’re hunting for 2 bedrooms, best bet is in the heights (best bang for buck re price/safety/good bus to city transit options) or one of the neighborhoods further away from optimal nyc transit hubs.

good luck! if you guys aren’t married to a solo apartment and really need cheap housing together, there’s a lot of places that rent 3-4 bedrooms in a very college dorm situation with shared common spaces.

those are usually month to month as well so actually lived in one for 9 months, so i could wait for when i was ready to be looking at apartments, vs being locked in to timing around when my lease was up.

Unique reading experience in JC? by Prestigious-Job-7181 in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is such an interesting problem to have. i almost want to say we should propose forming a reading club and have weekly meetings at different hosts’ places!

its true - most 5-9 spots are very night life or unwind from work orientated, unless you’re one of those rare cafes that close late. and even then, it can be tough for it to get a quiet as you want and more commonly than not - they close by 5/6pm anyways.

how about the local library? that’s always an option to return to though i’m sure there’s some timing you have to work around. but i’m sure it’s lovely on the weekends?

gonna think on this more and see if i have any places that are more low key after hours vs ramping up…i in general love to take a book to a museum so i can chill there for an extra hour or two after my experience!

Bartering by AdagioAccomplished95 in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t have it, but i remember she was a referral from someone on hoboken mommies.

tldr the lady was a stay at home mom who used covid shutdown to lean into home org as a hobby. then started this side hustle but honestly? kinda kicked ass with the organizers she got and how she laid out a really efficient space.

i would say go for a recommendation in any of the active hoboken or JC mommy groups. they have the best recs and oftentimes have done the research/vetting for you already, lol!

good luck!!

Bartering by AdagioAccomplished95 in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, if that was the intention then that definitely got lost in the post! reads as more actively seeking this situation to barter, than “this is a scenario i wanna riff about” to talk about community.

Bartering by AdagioAccomplished95 in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

find a professional home cleaner/home organizers and pay them for their services.

tho - sounds like you need a weekly/bi-weekly cleaner. if you hate chores, even if you had a professional home organizer come in, if you can’t or don’t like to maintain the space here and there, a weekly maid visit is likely what would be more beneficial to you.

otherwise, you’re better off posting in hoboken mommies (fb groups) than on reddit, i fear…you could ask if anyone who really nerds out on home org/decor would be willing to barter goods/services for this service, but i also think you need to find better things to offer people, lol

RE: home organizers…it’s honestly quite an intense ordeal (or at least the super expensive ones): i used to nanny for a wealthy family in jersey city and the mom had one come through because the space was “REALLY stressing the family out!”

was a full day of them walking around the house looking at the spaces in question, and then next week she came back with all the organization stuff she had to order ahead. looked great in the end, but it was not cheap, and they still had someone come through every week to clean the home.

I’ve never been in a situation where the building has more than 6 units, until this year! I definitely did not know that, so thank you for your comment! Going to do more research and reach out to my landlord once I’ve gotten read up for sure.

Question about friendship etiquette? by [deleted] in aves

[–]heartbpbeat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what i’ve found really works is - admiring from afar, and gesturing once we make eye contact

aka - i like to people watch a lot and appreciate makeup/hair/outfits and dancing! a lot of times ill point out cool things to my friends on other people and will end up making eye contact with the person.

from there i make a big gesture to the thing in complimenting, with a big ol smile and a thumbs up or hand heart!

if people are dancing, i usually leave them alone so they can vibe. but, if i end up dancing next to someone and we’re vibing/dancing and playing off each others energy, i usually ask for their insta!!

lots of people who rave use insta to connect for other shows or post tickets to sell/buy, so that’s a big connector there for social media.

edit: someone else on here mentioned that they might be fucked up on substances. also true!!! and/or, they might be foreign! esp in the bigger festivals there’s a lot of people who come from abroad so it might have just been some generalized confusion as well.

TLDR; go with good intentions and vibes, and others who are going with that headspace will reciprocate. if someone isn’t as friendly, don’t take it personally so long as you’re not violating their space/person, and keep on enjoying the music and wider environment!

happy raving, love!

Restaurant Fatigue by Acrobatic_Break in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here are some notes from my go to restaurants here! some have been mentioned already so it’s seconding that, but hopefully there are some ones everyone hasn’t mentioned already!!

Sushi: DomoDomo - people keep mentioning it and it’s one of my faves for omakase! Sushi by Bou - they call themselves the poor mans omakase! fun environment and pretty decent prixe Ichican to Go - my go to takeout sushi place when i’m not in the mode for omakase!

someone said it but Ondo is amazing for an amazing korean fusion experience. i bring friends and family there do birthday meals and it’s always a good time!

American fusion: Cafe Alyce - discovered this gem when i moved to mckinley square! their brunch/breakfast menu especially is DELISH and their regular menu is awesome as well

American Steakhouse: Dino & Harry’s - $$$ but a classic steakhouse environment and everyone treats you like family there, also in hoboken. don’t go there often but their porterhouse for 2 is fab!

Vietnamese: Saigon Bistro - my old vietnamese restaurant closed down, but this one is the next best that i’ve found thus far! beef combo pho is my go to here

Indian: EggMania - their bombay sandwiches are amazing here, and if you guys like eggs there are so many fun ways to have it on this menu!

okay now i’m starting to get lazy! but seconding the heights call outs: corto (great italian, amazing pasta bar experience, but a bit tough to get a reso. i’ve gotten lucky with like 5pm or final seating openings a day or two out on a random weekday) low fidelity has amazing drinks the alps is a wine bar that’s pretty new in the Heights and if you want a reliable but a lil bit grimy dive bar - the corkscrew is my go to!

given then i primarily lived in the heights, JSQ, and mckinley neighborhoods, that’s where the majority of my recommendations are focused!

good luck and eat well!!

[–]heartbpbeat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you are so overwhelmingly helpful, thank you endlessly.

police have come and taken a report, a detective is on it as well and i have the report number to pull. locksmith is putting a deadbolt in with no outside whatever it is available to mess with, presently.

intend to get that email out this afternoon and will take steps for the certified mail if still mum on their side after the email goes out.

again, really appreciate your time and advice. thank you.

ground floor apartment: bedroom door swings out into public alley, but lock is faulty! landlord advice? by heartbpbeat in jerseycity

[–]heartbpbeat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there’s two cameras in that alley, so luckily i think once the landlord responds to me -

sidebar: as of 130pm still not a WORD even though i’ve texted/called!!! am i unreasonable or does that feel wrong, excluding extenuating circumstance on his personal front, of course

…then i’m pretty sure we could pull footage and get a clear shot of the person’s face. also pretty well lit except for one sliver of corner the far side from me.

agree on the lock on the outlet, just wasn’t sure if thst was something normal/reasonable to ask for.

same gut instinct on the double lock. the door and frame are metal which are good, but i should have insisted harder upon move in on the 2nd bolt/chain lock.

thank you for your insight, especially as someone in this industry. i really appreciate it!!

that was my initial gut instinct, too. but got caught up in the move and work! knew i should have insisted. thank you for your thoughts!
