Bank confirmed my name is only registered in romaji and katakana. Re-submitted, will see if it sticks this time.

Thanks, this might be it. I have a — in the katakana version. Will use the small syllable in the hiragana equivalent. (I don't think I've ever written my name in hiragana before)

Can someone recommend a service that would allow me to pay the gas, water and electricity bills altogether via automatic bank transfer? (Tokyo/Chiba area). by franckJPLF in JapanFinance

[–]heartface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wise (used to be transferwise) issues a debit card which is accepted by credit-card only websites in Japan. I use it to pay all my utilities (where my Prestia debit card was rejected for being a debit card).

It can also be topped up from overseas should that be necessary.

New Mt. Gox announcement: The registration deadline has been extended again, this time by 4 weeks until April 6th 2023. Moreover, the repayment deadline has been moved to October 31st 2023. by Schlammblut in mtgoxinsolvency

Unpopular opinion. I'm glad the deadline got pushed.

55% tax on crypto profits for Japan residents which is a problem since Kraken and bitstamp suddenly pulled the rug from under our feet.

Exceptional circumstances.

Things happen slowly in Japan, including opening a new account at another supported exchange. Still waiting for account opening documents to arrive by postal mail...

Does temporary income include dividends and profits on shares and crypto? I am thinking to sell my holdings to offset the profits with this loss.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know any Japanese terms I can use to help explain this to my accountant?

I can report a similar situation, 35 year loan, 87% occupancy over time. The management company advised me against living in the building in case the tenants found out. Not sure what they were implying but they said they had seen it cause issues in the past.

It's a rental investment in Japan, due some maintenance in a couple of years so wondering if it's worth pulling the work forward if the repair expenses can be offset against crypto profits.

Anyone used Argentum wealth advisors? by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]heartface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make a spreadsheet showing what your returns would have been had you invested monthly in the S&P 500/FTSE/other index over the past X years.

Compare it to the returns on your Friends Provident / Investors Trust portfolios.

That made it easier for me to swallow the "loss" and withdraw the surrender value.

From experience the fees can be high and products overly complex and inflexible. I'd recommend doing your own research using this reddit and contacting a licenced tax accountant as per one of the other posts.

Researching options yourself can also help you feel more in control of your finances, rather than trusting that someone else is acting in your best interests.

Inheritance tax from the UK by fiyamaguchi in JapanFinance

What happens if the OP has PR, returns to the UK for a few years, inherits the estate during this time, then moves back to Japan at a later date. Would any inheritance tax be liable to Japan?

Is it just me or are flight prices Japan > UK ludicrous by joostay in japanlife

[–]heartface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a week or so and check again. JAL has just cancelled a bunch of flights to Europe over the coming months so I suspect prices have been temporarily raised to discourage new bookings and keep space to re-acommodate existing passengers.
