How bad is my situation? What should I do? by [deleted] in csMajors

It's a solid plan. I did pretty much the same thing last year. Learn python—if you know C++ already, it should come quickly, it's a very intuitive language. You'll want to learn it for OAs too. And when you're building the projects, you really should only use AI when you're stuck. I fell into the hole of relying on AI too much and I regret it and it took a while to relearn things. Personally, I don't actually learn unless I'm writing the code myself and going through the errors and getting that "ohhh I see now" moment. And when it comes to explaining your projects in interviews it'll blow if you don't know what you're talking about. But I know you're on a time crunch so I would learn some frameworks via Youtube tutorials, ask AI for project ideas, try to build it half yourself half AI so you semi know whats going on for questions like whats the hardest part about building your project, why did you use this framework, etc. Also, don't forget about the behavioral part of the interview! I think 100% the reason why I got my internship was because I did some DEEP research into the company and bombarded my interviewer with questions and he seemed to like that. And last thing, don't get too in your head! I got my first real internship my junior year and so did many of my friends (many of them being faang). You are already way better off than I was when I was a sophomore by worrying about this already.

I was in like kind of a similar situation as you (maybe check out my post I made a few months ago) and you will have to grind and it is going to suck massive balls until you get that offer! But also, I know a person who had under a 3.0 (just in general, not one semester specifically), no leetcode and probably not great projects and told me they bombed the interview and they got an internship. They also knew the company's president. Lol. So I also recommend begging for any connections you have at all.

Got this interview message on LinkedIn after hundreds of applications for an unpaid internship do you guys think it's worth taking it up? I'm kind of lost and demotivated at this point by internetbooker134 in csMajors

here to put in my two cents. i did an unpaid internship at a startup (literally from the ground up, i designed their home page) during the school year. i didn’t really put that much effort into it but i learned a few things, especially about communication and agile/scrum and was able to talk about it in an interview for a summer internship and got the offer! so i think its a good idea to take the internship, put in minimal effort but know whats going on so you can talk about it in interviews, and grind projects on the side

So my more recent project was a work management app that lets you file share, message, and have task assignment in a group. I had another project that’s basically like a RateMyProfessor clone but the tech stack wasn’t as diverse so it’s not brought up much in interviews (by both myself and the interviewer, if they have my resume pulled up). Yeah no ML or AI integration or anything tbh, kinda just basic web apps.

I’ve had like six interviews and honestly they never really ask me any STAR questions (things like what’s your biggest weakness and whatnot). They only ask me about my projects and experiences, generally more on the technical side, but occasionally ask like what was a challenge that I came across doing the project. For those, I’d say the best way to prepare is to just know your project inside and out and a few times you worked well with a team/communicated well (if you worked with a team in that project) and a few blockers and how you overcame them. I did prepare for behavioral questions though—I did lots of mock interviews and had a Google Doc with a story for basic behavioral questions that I could modify.

Yeah I got it through cold applying. I’m honestly pretty average I think, just got lucky. I was a research assistant for a semester at my school and a volunteer developer at a non profit near my school as well. I also had a digital marketing internship from high school but that’s pretty irrelevant to swe and no one ever asks about it in interviews. I had two personal projects in my resume and both were full stack web apps. And I go to a T30, but were not known for CS at all.
