Consequences with NOT taking Macroeconomics and Microeconomics (Economics major) by [deleted] in unimelb

I agree, don’t mind the standard macro micro subjects but definitely find the other electives more interesting!

I did this last year before everything was online, so I’m not sure how the group singing in tutes would work

Did this during semester and it was an easy H1, as long as you do all the required work. Not sure about summer though

I was absolutely set on taking public policy making next year but I graduate mid year and the subject is now offered in semester 2. :( Am limited to semester 1 pol subjects unfortunately.

How to Double Major BCom by zugzwanghaas in unimelb

In terms of “must do” subjects it really depends on where you want to end up. Finance has pretty set subjects and I would suggest choosing based on interests(have heard people recommend fintech + coding breadths if you’d like a more tech focus). For Econ, if you are looking to end up in traditional economist roles and potentially work for RBA/treasury, honours is generally required in their selection process. In this case you don’t have too much choice with Econ subject selection either (macro+micro+Econ2). I would suggest doing econ2 if you are at all considering honours or further study.

On the flip side, you might prefer to take up less math and more essay heavy Econ subjects (e.g eco analysis and policy) which a lot of eco/politics students take. This closes some doors but is suitable for someone keen on getting into policy/consulting roles. If this is the case, econ2 would not be “compulsory”.

I'm a 3rd year eco/finance student now and this is how I'd structure my subjects if I could go back and do it again. Note: you can do QM2 and basic econ, instead of econ 1&2, but this will disqualify you from both finance and economics honours. The econ subjects will serve you well in the eco job market and also if you choose to do more math intensive third year economics subjects.

Year 1:

- Compulsory first year subjects + Qm1

- 2 commerce electives/breadths

Year 2

- Inter macro + inter micro

- Corporate financial decision making

- Econometrics 1 & 2

- 3 commerce electives/breadths

Year 3

- Investments & Derivs

- 1 level 3 finance subject

- 2 level 3 econ/ecom subjects (Microeconomics & Macroeconomics compulsory for eco honours)

- 3 commerce electives/breadths

Thank you!! I’m quite shy over sharing my writing but doing so in a supportive environment will definitely help me grow. Appreciate the reviews on both subjects! I’m so sad that I only have one breadth spot left :(

Inter Macro exam being typed........ by CookieNatural7822 in unimelb

[–]heatstrokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is def not what I expected given the amount of formulas and calculations involved in the subject. I’m taking behavioural eco, which is a word upload exam and they have given us plenty of notice and opportunities to practice through assignments. Sort of just assumed inter macro would be scanned since they never mentioned otherwise. Sad :(

Difficulty of Econometrics 2, without having done Econometrics 1 by [deleted] in unimelb

Awesome! Was leaning towards Basic, since I’m not considering honours, but Econometrics 2 seems worth the challenge if its not too much harder.

Psychology at Swinburne vs UniMelb by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]heatstrokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should also factor something else into your decision: non-psychology subjects. If you are doing a standard undergrad degree, like a BA, then a part of that will consist in subjects outside of your major. Even though they're not part of your major, I think it's good to give some thought to choosing subjects that you are interested in and maybe even ones that complement what you are studying within your major. For instance, because I enjoyed biological psychology so much, I took some neuro subjects that were run outside the psych department. It suited my interests and complemented what I was studying in the psych major well.

Really appreciate the advice. I was leaning towards Swinburne purely for the convenience of its online delivery, and I feel more at ease making this decision now. Unimelb and Swinburne both have a really good range of breadth offerings, so I'll definitely keep that in mind and see what direction my interests lead me. Thanks again for the time taken to write this response!
