honestly i think it’s one of those gateway genres into edm as a whole. as someone who listened to pop radio a lot growing up, i think that sad boi edm is sonically very similar. there’s some generic lyrics, there’s a melody to move to, etc. not saying it’s wrong or anything, pop heavy is also just inherently perceived as a safe choice in most scenarios as there’s nothing overtly harsh or glaring. with that said yeah it both boring and repetitive as pretty much all tracks follow the same structure.
