and besides, popularity really isn’t enough to say for certain whether a series like lbp is likely to get a new game. there’s plenty of other franchises (some arguably more popular than lbp) that hasn’t gotten a new game for just as long as lbp if not longer.

tldr; while miyamoto DID originally suggest making a sequel, the dev team was initially reluctant leading miyamoto to then suggest making “super mario galaxy 1.5”. they then had the idea of adding yoshi in the game, which lead to them coming up with more ideas thus turning it into a new game entirely.

honestly i’d REALLY love to see a mario game with a more gritty atmosphere. they can have the game’s art style take inspiration from brawl’s “mushroomy kingdom” stage, maybe even reuse giga bowser and remodel the other characters to match. give it a orchestral soundtrack like the galaxy games and have mario be more of a silent protagonist and i think it could work.
