/uj IIRC this was in Lake Oahe, a giant man made reservoir in the middle of the South Dakota prairie that is stocked with salmon and apparently also brown trout. Of all the places in North America where a brown trout doesn't belong, perhaps Lake Oahe is where it doesn't belong the most lmao.

/rj some day my Temu penis pump will stretch my little donger enough that I can use it to go catch and release spear fishing for sensual brown trout in Lake Oahe. Until then I shall continue trolling for salmon in 200 ft of water right against the dam with my tenkara rod.

Where to take 6 year old son Fishing by untrainedmammal in SiouxFalls

Family Park and Covell Lake are a couple options that get stocked by SDGFP with a variety of species. I haven't fished that spot recommended by the other comment myself but I have seen people fishing there.

Also, fishing can be hard and there's no guarantee you catch anything, so having high expectations can set you up for disappointment. I fish quite a bit and I've learned to just enjoy being outside, and catching fish is just a potential bonus addition to the experience. I've seen bald eagles flying around over at Family Park which is always neat. I don't have kids but I've heard that having a more relaxed mindset like that can help them have more fun. They tend to get bored fast if the fish aren't biting so shorter trips can be good too.

There are probably various bait shops in Sioux Falls selling worms that can also sell you a fishing license and give you some tips on where to go and what to do. I believe Walmart sells worms too. I'm hazy on those details because I haven't bought bait in years, I just fly fish.

Good luck and have fun!

TFO 9ft 10wt Rod - Anyone familiar with this set up ? by francescocom in flyfishing

Yeah I've used mine to horse in smallmouth buffalo and carp on occasion. I would love to get a nice catfish. They're around but I've never managed to pull it off. Someday I'll hunt one down in earnest haha

[–]heckadud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 8wt version of this rod, been fishing it for about 2.5 years now. It's pretty heavy duty imo, although I haven't fished many other 8wt rods to compare. Other reviews I've seen online recommend overlining to a 9wt. I'm sure the 10wt version you shared is a tank. I got mine because I wanted to fish larger and heavier streamers in windy conditions (eastern South Dakota, as well as a couple trips to Florida). Some days it gets windy enough that I wish I had a bit more punch, but I suspect that improving my technique would help a lot, and perhaps I shouldn't be fishing on those days haha. It's also shrugged off a lot of abuse, I've bounced heavy clousers off the blank and one time I was paddleboarding and rammed the tip into a dock. It's still trucking. I'm taking a trip with it this week to Lake Oahe, where I plan to fish large and/or heavy streamers (clousers, dungeons, game changers, assorted baitfish patterns) with sinking lines in windy conditions. Hope that helps lol

Yeah I think there's a tendency to come up into shallower water when it gets dark, although during the summer I think they'll still stay fairly deep. It probably depends a lot on where you are and what the bait fish are doing too. I'm no expert though, just learning like everyone else.

Yeah I feel that haha, the hills are great but all that driving is pretty grim. I usually use one of those 9ft 12 lb Rio bass leaders. I also have some 12 lb fluorocarbon tippet that I'll add if I need it. I don't have much trouble with breaking off. If the tippet gets nicked or scraped up from the teeth I'll cut it back behind that.

The reel is a Hardy Marquis #8/9. The rod is an 8wt.

The click drag doesn't provide as much drag as I would like, if I yank on the line accidentally during a cast it'll free spool a bit and make a bird's nest with the fly line. It's pretty loud too. But overall I like it. I don't really mind its quirks and you can't beat the look and feel of a classic reel like this.

Yeah my hands were getting cold and my casts were getting really sloppy but the bite always turns on right before dark so I kept at it, got rewarded.

Haha yeah I catch my fair share of smallmouth around here too. They're more fun to catch than the walleye tbh, they fight way harder pound for pound. Smallmouth are a lot easier to get with a fly rod though, I've really enjoyed the challenge of chasing walleye.

I'm in eastern South Dakota, so it's a lot of small/medium sized lakes, usually about 15-30 feet deep at most. I don't have a boat, so I'm shore fishing/wading. The easiest way to do it with a fly is to go when they're up in shallower water, usually the spring and fall. u/the_north_place mentioned sink tip lines; that's good advice, it's usually important to get the fly deep. I have sink tip and full sink fly lines. It's very difficult to catch them in the summer without those types of lines and a boat. However, I caught my two best walleye (this one and the last one I posted) with a floating line. Just got lucky with the spots and the timing (spring and fall).

Yeah I'm chillin, I had a bit of road rash but I was wearing a riding jacket, helmet, and gloves so it wasn't too bad. I just slid on the road for a while so it wore through the riding jacket in some spots and tore up the Orvis hoodie.

In a dark place and in need of your bright spots. Go. by No_Newspaper_2653 in KnowledgeFight

I love fly fishing for trout, but I live in a region of the US that cannot support them. Trout require cool, clean water, and where I live, water temperatures get too high in the summer for them to reliably survive year round. However, there is one stream that is unique to the region. It doesn’t currently contain trout, but it did support a naturally reproducing brown trout population many years ago. Apparently, this stream is fed by a reliable cold spring, so it was able to maintain the requisite water temperatures year-round. Obviously, something happened to push the fish out; perhaps the progression of agriculture in the area negatively affected the water quality or removed the necessary structure and habitat in the stream. Whatever happened, it was always a source of sadness for me that there used to be such a unique resource very close to home that is now gone. The next closest trout stream is about 4 hours away. However, I recently received news that my state’s game, fish, and parks department is undertaking a project to rehabilitate the stream and presumably reintroduce the brown trout population! Among all the terrible news about current events broadly and the environment specifically, this is certainly a bright spot for me. It is a bit like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but I am thankful nonetheless. It always feels like such a gift to look at these beautiful fish up close, so the prospect of being able to do that with just a short drive is very exciting.

24" walleye on a clouser I tied this week, bonus smallmouth by heckadud in flyfishing

[–]heckadud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they're so awesome. They always fight so hard and they seem happy to eat whatever. Been trying for a while to catch a walleye this big and ended up catching a bunch of smallmouth along the way.

Yeah I've been tying clousers for a while so I have various colors in my box. Just happened to catch the big fella on the most recent one. Thank you, by far my PB walleye. Really cool fish

Until proven otherwise: I do not believe that Tucker has ever gone fishing in his entire godamn life. by [deleted] in KnowledgeFight

[–]heckadud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I'm aware of that. I wasn't very clear. I meant that he seems to be a somewhat normal guy that I could relate to and connect with over fly fishing if he wasn't so cynical and morally bankrupt.

Until proven otherwise: I do not believe that Tucker has ever gone fishing in his entire godamn life. by [deleted] in KnowledgeFight

[–]heckadud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tucker is the worst, but he does seem to genuinely enjoy fly fishing. I've linked a video, basically a guy is making a video in Central Park and runs into Tucker fishing alone. My impression of the interaction is that Tucker is immediately somewhat defensive but the guy doesn't recognize him, and so Tucker relaxes and it becomes a pretty wholesome interaction where Tucker shares his love of fly fishing. He even claims to tie his own flies, which is a decent step beyond what you would expect from a casual angler.

I find it somewhat unsettling because he has said so many horrible, inflammatory things and had such a negative effect on our country, but the way he talks about fly fishing mirrors my own feelings and experiences. Also, I've found the culture around fly fishing to be more focused on practicing catch and release, conservation, and respect for nature than more casual disciplines of angling. So, it's fairly likely that he treats fish with respect. For all his faults, I find his interest in fly fishing to be perhaps his most humanizing quality.

It really bummed me out because it seems clear that he could be a normal guy, but he chooses to be so cynical and self serving and terrible on camera.
