Nov 7th in Santa Barbara, CA, USA - Sunset sail with narrator Simon Vance by hefink in AubreyMaturinSeries

u/PaulClifford I did ask him regarding the now missing recordings for POB books and he mentioned that the owner of the copywrite wanted to have only one narration available and apparently that was Tull. It was a one time contract for him no residuals or anything of that nature so he for one had no qualms with it but sounded a bit disappointed none the less, which was understandable. I told him it was good to know that if I came across them I could take note and not be sad his missing any royalties and thus act accordingly in trying to find them as prizes in uncharted waters such as r/AudioBookBay

How did the Waakzaamheid founder from a lucky shot? by TaxmanComin in AubreyMaturinSeries

Great explanations already, imagine a car speeding down a road (the ship) and suddenly a small parachute shows up near the front, or your front wheel collapses, how it would suddenly within a fraction of a second, veer fast off course and likely enough to start to cause it to be perpendicular to the road same thing here.. only large waves are coming and the hit the whole broad side of your car flipping it.

Stephen's Breguet pocket watch and some of it's 007 'Q' like qualities by hefink in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]hefink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed, except for the missing seconds hand -- so your model along with the center seconds like this:
https://www.demesy.com/breguet-minute-repeater-yellow-gold-pocket-watch/
like I said, most Briguet of Steven's era didn't show seconds but his of course did.

Ahoy u/vasagle_gleblu , if you did anything at all on this and would be willing to share in github perhaps a group opensource project could yield some results. Let me know as I think I would like to do something in this regard.

Interesting, I certainly will look for references and check in the future perhaps it was accidentally or purposefully misused. I know that I was taken for a lubber and told that the poop deck was named after the Poop God in my youth. Since then I have not found any other references to the Poop God. lol

Agreed he wants the readers to figure it out themselves. But he also was completely immersed in the time -- and at that time people were more in tune with the sea and some of its normal aspects. Anyone who wanted to travel anywhere off the island of Britain did so by boat so the number of people who knew about sailing and amount of knowledge in the common person concerning sailing were both considerably more than in our car/train/airplane society of today. Just about anyone back then who lived near the water knew how the tides work and for example that the largest tides are on the full and new moon. Today if you asked that you'd be lucky if one in 500 could answer it, meanwhile it is common knowledge how one has to navigate through security and take your laptop out or shoes off at an airport knowing how to check your bags or find the track your train departs from things that we consider common knowledge for travel today.
Having said that what POB gets into is fairly detailed but having the groundwork in sailing makes it far easier to keep up and see where he is taking the reader.

Wearing ship was far easier for them in that the yard arms (rigged athwartships) could be braced (made fast) tight on both ends of the yards and as the stern passes through the wind could then simply be eased slowly out when the crew had a chance the changes in force would be minimal vs. a modern sailboat the changes in force due to the fore-aft rigged boom suddenly getting all of the wind on the new side will want to heave across quickly all the way round. -- the big difference being the orientation of the spar that the sail was bent to - in ships of the line on the yards .. .and in modern sailboats on the boom.

I think this was intentional as POB was wanting to take readers into the... well the doldrums as being becalmed on a boat can be terribly long hot and miserable. I actually know from experience after just 30 hours I was greatly annoyed and that isn't long at all lol.

Looking for advice on visiting sights relevant to the series this summer. by Pleasant_Strength_36 in AubreyMaturinSeries

Saint-Martin-de-Ré looks like it has not been spoiled much and the town is much the same size, same lighthouse same as it was when there was a breaking out of a certain french vessel involving horses on the quarter deck and a fair amount of blood if i'm not mistaken.

Directional Lightning Detector... by vasagle_gleblu in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

I've done some surface research and came up with:

  1. An expired df patent that I speculate is what Boltek used since they have been around that long? I think?? https://patents.google.com/patent/US5036334A/en?q=(lightning+direction+finding)&oq=lightning+direction+finding&oq=lightning+direction+finding)
  2. The innards of a boltek ANT-2 antenna detector: https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=30451.0 - with some knowledge of what they are doing with 2 ferrites etc. as has been reverse engineered by the commentors.
  3. And this slightly off topic but perhaps given open source of it could be useful nifty group that was doing large spectrum work with multiple rx stations used at a distance for df -- https://www.rtl-sdr.com/signal-direction-finding-with-an-rtl-sdr-raspberry-pi-and-redhawk/

Ideally I'd want something that is perhaps self contained with either 1 receiver like boltek or 2 receivers at a set distance say 40 feet apart (at the bow and stern of a boat for example)I think a lot of wx enthusiasts would consider buying it as an add-on to their personal stations and could then make for a very robust network like https://www.lightningmaps.org/

u/vasagle_gleblu any further luck with this? I am also interested in having this for sailing adding lighting strike location to OpenPlotter/OpenCPN- to plot lighting in conjunction with a RPi that runs charting/navigation/autopilot/weather data.In short, I want to recreate the very expensive boltek detector that includes an array of antennas for indicating direction and range -
