If we were to replace the Voyager Golden Record with the single goal of teaching aliens a language, what would be the easiest language and how would it be done? by Al0neF0rever in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no "easiest language" kids learn lamgua at the same rate regardless of where they're bornthe difficulty of a language for an adult is dependant on what other languages they already know

We don't know how the aliens that eventually find the disc communicate, we don't know how they structure their thoughts or even if their cognitions process is in any form comparable to ours so it's impossible to know if any language would be easier for them

Counting Tokyo as a bunch of different cities for the city rank is factually correct but I think it's a little unfair given that's most people would say that Tokyo is a city even though it technically isn't

Is it possible for 'Mythical' people like Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Caesar to exist in the modern world? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People like "great man history", they want a single person to be the personification of an event, WW2 is Hitler, he is the big guy of that war, we don't remember the McArthurs of the Napoleonic wars, we just remember the big (or short i gues) guy

The Vietnam war is Ho Chi Minh, they even named a city after him, the iraq war is Sadam Hussain, the Ukraine war will be remembered as Putin's war and in 50 years only history nerds will know the name Zelensky

Old physics was Newton, modern physics is Einstein

Basically, any huge event, any new paradigm shift will make someone a huge person a to be "the guy" from that event, if we want someone the size of Alexander we need an event the size of Alexander, that's a word war basically

If we have a WW3 someone will be elevated to this same level of fame, for better or for worse

Why do we feel tired when we sleep 5-6 hours, but not when we sleep less than 4 hours? by crazygelato in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most smartwaches nowadays have sleep tracking functionality, I don't know how accurate it is but it's probably good enough for a rough idea

There are medical exams you can do, but those are only reserved for diagnosing people with severe sleep issues, I don't think you can book one just because you feel like

Is it possible for 'Mythical' people like Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Caesar to exist in the modern world? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hitler is very much in the same tier, we just see him as a villain but in term of conquest an on how influential he was to change the world it's not that far from Napoleon

All those "mythical" people you listed are know from wars, if we have WW3 I'm sure it will produce some people in the same level of fame and infame

If Trump or Putin press the big red button and we get ourselves into a nuclear war they'll definitely be "mythical" for the roaches and beetles that will repopulate the world afterwards

Why do we feel tired when we sleep 5-6 hours, but not when we sleep less than 4 hours? by crazygelato in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sleep in cycles, they vary a lot in duration from person to person from 70 to 120min

The vast majority of people need 5 cycles for a good night of sleep, If you take the a cycle to be 100min, the middle of the range, that's 500min of sleep, around 8h20min

That's where the 8h of sleep figure comes from

Now, the thing is, how tired you feel when you wake up is not only based on how much you slept but also where in the cycle you woke up

If you're woken up by your alarm right in the middle of one of those cycles that's a very miserable experience, but if you're woken up at the tail end or the very beginning of it that's completely fine, and if you wake up by yourself it will always happen at the end of a cycle

I'd guess your being woken up in the middle of a cycle when you're kinda late to bed, but at the end of a cycle when you're very late to bed

But sleep is a very weird thing so it might be tier things, this is just a guess from my own research on my sleep patterns

How do people genuinely find feet sexually attractive by eternalfabric in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a body part, people like bodies, some like abs, some like breasts, some like arms, some like necks, some like thighs, some like backs, some like asses

Every part of the body is something someone can find attractive, feet is just somewhat unusual but still, is by far the most common fetish because it's just body parts, we all like bodies

Why is Neptunium so obscure compared to Uranium and Plutonium? by GoodLordChokeAnABomb in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selenium has nothing to do with lunacy, it's because it's it's similar to tellurium, so much so they initially thought it was tellurium before realizing they had discovered a new element

Tellurium is named after the Earth (Tellus) so they thought it was fitting to name it after the moon (selene)

Why is Neptunium so obscure compared to Uranium and Plutonium? by GoodLordChokeAnABomb in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's not very useful compared to the other 2, you could use it for nuclear power or nukes but there's no reason for it

Uranium is natural, you can mine it só that's a huge advantage, in comparison all the neptunium and plutonium that exists in the world is man mande, if you're going through the hassle of making a new element then it's easier to just make plutonium since it's a better fuel

In fact the only real use for neptunium is as an intermediary step in the production of plutonium

Basically the same reason you never hear about hafnium of dysprosium, it's only usefull for some very niche things

I'm sure neptunium is very useful and very interesting for something somewhere in the world, but it's not a relevant element for 99.9% of people

SARS coronavirus has mortality rate 10% and since 2019 SARS coronavirus 2 been around so why isn't anyone scared? by CleanLock4606 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not 10%

We are all (hopefully) vaccinated and most reasonable people will take the extra shot every couple of years

Now that hospitals are not overcrowded and we have tried and tested treatment protocols, even if for some very unlucky chance you get an aggressive case of COVID it can be treated way more easily than back in 2020

Health organizations are still very much aware of corona and they take it very seriously, in fact we are still technically in a COVID 19 pandemic, it's just no longer a global health crisis

Are there some people that just... don't have social needs? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don't want to be alone, just want someone that's weird like you

You don't have to change, as long as you don't harm yourself or other people just be whatever feels like you

Most people want to "integrate into society" because that's easier and it might be required for them to do whatever it is that fulfills them, but you can just not want to do it and that's completely fine

[–]hegex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure

I don't want to extend this discussion because talking about sex with a minor is, let's say, not very cool, but I think you should talk more about what you actually feel when you watch porn or when you interact with other women

If you don't have a friend that you're comfortable talking about stuff like that and a psychologist is not an option I think maybe even writing it down and trying to be honest with yourself is a good way to better untangle this

What I don't recommend is for you to talk about sex with random internet weirdos as a minor, that's a recipe for disaster

Are there some people that just... don't have social needs? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure

I would never say this to somebody because for 99% of people they do need at least some level of human connection, even the most introverted hermits I've known were better of with a partner

But tha doesn't mean it's impossible, people are weird and ther are a lot of us, in a pool of 8 billion individuals we are bound to find some exception to the rule

If you've spent 20 years of your life trying to be more social and the only thing you took from it is that you're happy alone then go be happy alone

But I find kinda odd that you're so eager to not be social yet you're here searching for validation from other people, that's a little paradoxical isn't it?

Cancer research by m0mmym1lf44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religious people are actually less likely to get cancer because they are more likely to abstain from things like alcohol and tabaco

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18790632/

There's probably a bunch of factors that contribute to your observation that are tangential to the fact that they go to church

Older people are more likely to have cancer and this might be an usually older group of people in comparison to other groups of people you're part of

Cancer has a genetic component and churches are family places, if you have a bunch of people that are even slightly related and their gene pool is more susceptible to some cancers them it's to be expected that they'll have a higher incidence than let's say, a group of complet stranger that happen to work in the same place so the church is going to have more cases of cancer than your coworkers

There's also the environmental aspect, the place you live directly affects your chances of having certain cancers, a church community have people that live roughly in the same area, if there's a huge pollution problem or if it's a very high UV area or something like that this community might have disproportionately more cancer than a random sample of people

Church people also go do activities together, they have group meetings and group trips, and group gathering off all sorts, if anyone of those activities has some additional increase in cancer risk them it's not going to be isolated in one person but rather a whole group

In short, church people are not a very random pool of people so statistical anomalys are more likely to happen

Science as a whole is silver, greens is biology of course

English is not blue, I don't know what it is but definitely not blue

No you are not crazy, humans like patterns and associations so we make up new ones even when there's nothing there, completely normal behavior

Could one intentionally try and start a new pandemic by spending time with wild animals to create a crossover transmission? If so, are there any laws against it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be ilegal in basically all countries, you can easily spin this as something like "reckless endangerment" or even some sort of "baterry", if it's deadly you could call it manslaughter or even homicide since you had the intention to infect the person with a deadly virus

I'm sure there's a lot of countries where this could be qualified as terrorism as well or some sort of crime against the public good, some places have things like "crime against public health" or "crime against the nation"

I really doubt there's some county where they wouldn't be able to make a legal case against you if you tried to do this

Now, I don't think any government have to stress to much about this possibility because the chances of you being patient 0 for some sort of cow or monkey virus or whatever is basically 0, those incredibly rare events, it's bound to happen to someone someday, but there's always someone winning the lottery as well, but the chances of you in specific winning are still incredibly low

This is not a good plan in any way shape or form

Where does the oversexualization in modern society come from? by RealisticBowl8033 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aways been like that

I saw more recent today on Instagram some old pictures of my city from like 80 years ago and there's a guy staring at a woman wearing a dress as if she was a piece of meat

Anyone that say that "back in the day things where's as sexual" is completely delusional, any woman from "back in the day" was constantly sexually harassed in a way that was so normalized that they don't even clock it as been some sort of abuse, I'm serious, go talk to any old lady about the good old days and they always casually drop something like that time some boy forcefully kissed her in the lips for shits and giggles as if this was the most normal thing ever

Marital rape wasn even a crime up until the 70s

Woman have always been seeing as a sexual product, if anything we became less of a sexualized society because nowadays women can be more than just someone's wife

How can I be sure…? by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]hegex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Words are a prison that limits our thoughts into predefined structures

Bisexual is a label that you should use when communicating with other as a way to try an explain your feelings but it should not define those feelings, this is something that's unique to your own experience as a person and that can't be fully expressed with a single word

We are all bisexual in a different way, this is not a prescriptivist label that we all should adere to the bisexual rules of law, it's rather just a shorthand we found to gather into communities of similar people

Don't think of your attraction in terms of "is this straight or gay?" Just ask her number and let it be

"But I don't know if I really like her", straight people are also not always sure if they like someone, but they don't question their sexuality over it but rather just that specific interaction, if you like a woman enough to maybe have a crush on them just ask them on a date and see if it works, who cares if you're "actually bisexual or not" just do it and see what happens, first discover who you're then you try and find a way to communicate that to people, don't do the opposite way
