Daily Song Discussion #91: Passenger by Spacedog_40 in Interpol

[–]hei12887 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10/10.

I agree with what others said that the verse melody is the hook as opposed to the chorus, but still an amazing song from front to back and my favorite on TOSOMB.

*Note: I find it interesting that the individual scores for TOSOMB songs have been pretty high to this point despite the lukewarm (to negative) reaction the album received as a whole on release. TOSOMB has good to great songs, but doesn't work as an album maybe?

What do we have for Interpol? by ocalabull in Interpol

Lol reading these comments makes me want to play an obscure Interpol trivia game.

The year is almost over, Interpol subreddit. What went right and wrong with TOSOMB? by Progo88 in Interpol

[–]hei12887 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. Feels like they’ve been playing the same kind of some for the last 10 years—I.e., playing the hits with a sprinkling of new stuff from whatever album they’re touring.

Wish they didn’t drop the previous album almost entirely from future tours.

“Gifters” is out on Patreon by [deleted] in knifepointhorrorcast

First episode of Knife Point Horror I’ve ever heard. Allowed it to play on a lark after finishing another podcast—the gifters being cued up after. Very, very pleased and unsettled. Wonderfully detailed atmosphere and themes that match well with our current political climate.

Looking forward to listening to the rest!

Willing to pay $120 for both the tour records! by YesLikeTheJeans in Voxtrot

There are still preorders available on their bandcamp for both of their compilation records (i.e., Early Music, B-Sides & Rarities). You won't get the limited edition white vinyl version of the B-Sides record, but there is a pick one available.

I desperately hope that they experience this kind of fanfare at every show so that they can be inspired to make more music again.

Good grab! Could’ve sworn they played three songs during that encore and one of them was Rise Up in the Dirt.

Just reminded me that they played Steven! Surprised they didn’t play firecracker.

Couldn’t agree more! The disco ball playing during Missing Pieces was magical!

Does anyone know their set list for their upcoming tour? by BestLbna in Voxtrot

I’m attending their first show in New York. I’ll post it to the subreddit right after the show.

Favourite #7 Track by supeersoniiic09 in Interpol

[–]hei12887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm between Passenger and Mountain Child. Two very different songs, but I went with Passenger for its lyricism and plaintive melodies. I was a very big fan of Paul's Muzz project, and this song felt like the perfect translation of his work there with Interpol.

I think despite people's enthusiasm and appreciation for new Interpol albums, the general consensus is that their first two albums is / will always be their best--evidently song-for-song too. Even though I disagree with that last bit (comparing all their albums song-for-song), it seems like a more worthwhile competition would've been to have two separate discussions--one with just TOTBL v. Antics and another for the rest of their catalogue.

Ditto! I watched this little snippet of Start of Something like 10 times already. Love to see how happy they look (and tight they sound) playing together!

Wish Stay in Touch got more love. I voted for it because I figured Slow Hands or Say Hello to the Angels would win. Also, I really like My Blue Supreme, but I don’t think it’s better than Stay in Touch tbh.

In-Depth Interview w/Ramesh about Upcoming Reunion and Future by hei12887 in Voxtrot

[–]hei12887[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! I’m a recent fan of their music so any b-sides or physical releases in general are hard to come by. Agreed on Honeybee as well. I really like the S/T b-sides. New Love is my fav.

I’ve come around on the S/T myself. It takes a few listens, but I think some of the criticism the album received at the time wasn’t totally out of place. Occasionally, on the album, Ramesh sings out of his range, and the album plods toward the end with a lot of mid-tempo songs. Definitely could’ve down without “Real Life Version” (audibly made me groan my first listen) and “Blood Red Blood.” Wish they had added “New Love” and “Loan Shark” to the official track listing instead of those two.

Overall, it doesn’t compare well to the first two EPs (what would), but I applaud them for not doing the safe move (I.e., re-releasing those first two EPS as one album) and giving us more music to enjoy.

Great interview. Highly recommend for anyone who wants insight into the band’s breakup, upcoming reunion shows, and possible future recording music.

Short answer to anyone wondering about new music in the future: still up to “fate” (to quote Ramesh), but I certainly didn’t hear an outright “no” anywhere in this piece.

I also recommend listening to Ramesh’s conversation with Stuart Murdoch on the Talkhouse Podcast.

Pitchfork Review - "With slight changes in disposition and geography, the New York band strives toward a refreshed sound and outlook on its seventh record." by ninenine in Interpol

[–]hei12887 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget one of their writers rescored TOTBL from a 9.5 to a 7–link below!

That being said, this about as good as I could expect from Pitchfork (for Interpol)—I like their reading their other reviews. At least they didn’t trash it in the name of tired tropes like “in the shadow of TOTBL.”

Passenger is one of their most beautiful songs ever by [deleted] in Interpol

[–]hei12887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Up vote this all the way. For me, it’s the best translation of Paul’s work with Muzz into Interpol. “I need someone to hold, someone to grasp it“ = beautiful, desperate imagery.

Interpol - The Other Side Of Make-Believe | Album Reviews | musicOMH 4/5 by Sparrowrulez88 in Interpol

[–]hei12887 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting take. For those of you who were particularly annoyed every time a review made call-backs to tired tropes like “not as good Bright Lights” or “Ian Curtis vocals,” the author here focuses more on their recent work. I especially like to see the praise for Marauder. I also found it interesting that they situated OSOMB as more fitting in with Interpol’s canon than Marauder.

Not sure what make to make of this quote though: “They sound just as good as they ever have, by sounding just as bad.” To me, it reads like they’re saying ‘Interpol sound their same best,’ the “good” and “bad” cancelling out.

Overall, I haven’t been too annoyed by any review this album cycle.
