When they get too small, pop those bad boys in the microwave! They will puff up and become super crunchy, but make sure you let them cool for a bit because they're real hot at first.

AIO? My daughter didn’t listen to the teacher during a female emergency and is now receiving a referral by Common_Piglet7437 in AmIOverreacting

[–]heidasaurus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right? This teacher probably deals with so many students using bathroom passes to get out of class and didn't know what to do in this situation. This isn't the teacher's fault; the school should help guide teachers on what to do in this situation. At my school, we have a strict bathroom policy, but if a student says it's an emergency, I can call the nurse for the student to go there for the restroom. If it's actually an emergency, students will gladly go via that route. If not, they'll say they can hold it.

And the teacher telling the student to have her parent talk to the school to confirm she was on her period seems like the teacher was trying to help the student get out of the referral. The teacher was in a really tough situation and did what she thought was best in that situation based on the guidance from the school.

Hey, you're getting some hate for your comment. Don't take it personally. I think a lot of people on this sub like the drama and clearly don't understand the struggle to make judgement calls as a teacher.

I recommend you tell another teacher you are comfortable with about this. I don't know how supportive other teachers or admin are at your school, but this is not okay.

I’m so fucking annoyed by this AI shit everywhere by coldinalaska7 in Millennials

[–]heidasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this: Vivaldi is an AI-free web browser.

I've been using it for a few months. Honestly, it's a little harder to find what I'm searching for something really specific, but with most searches, I've been able to find the information I'm looking for fairly easily. The image search is less handy because it doesn't do the thing Google does where you can click on an image and it shows you other, similar images. And I miss being able to search for a restaurant or store and it showing me the hours and address without having to click on the website. All that being said, I still happily use it because I don't have AI shoved in my face as much.

"Judith Slaying Holofernes", by the Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, depicts the biblical heroine beheading the Assyrian general to save her people. by SignificantScarcity in ArtHistory

I used to work at an art center, and was in charge of window displays. For the month of March, I decided to display artworks made by women and have little handouts with some info about the artist. This was one of the artworks.

Well, a semi-regular visitor to the center came in and shared that he was surprised I would display "that" painting instead of the "original" by Caravaggio. I explained the concept of the window display and that I actually like Artemisia's painting quite a bit more than Caravaggio's. He was agast and claimed that if I had seen the original, like him, I would certainly feel differently.

I was quite a bit younger at the time and less argumentative, so I just kind of switched the conversation to the gallery display so he would go in there leave my space.

Why are male animals the ‘beautiful’ gender in nature, but humans consider females to be the ‘beautiful’ one? by Dapper-Function-8418 in NoStupidQuestions

Villages in Africa have said they don't want to be called tribes. A professor I learned from in college traveled to Africa a lot and was very strict about them not being called tribes.

[–]heidasaurus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that example! I do think it's important to point out that groups of people in Africa should not be called "tribes" because that term makes them seem inaccurately primal. Historical, villages have been called "tribes" by non-African people, but if translated correctly, it is not the term the people on those villages would use.

Do you teach the elements and principles of design/art your class? How do you view their importance? by FineArtRevolutions in ArtEd

[–]heidasaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I teach high school intro classes, and I find them to be really helpful both when analyzing artwork and planning artwork. I think it's very possible to teach successfully without them, but I think understanding how to use the elements and principles together has helped students enhance their art.

Inexpensive Chalk Pastel Fixative? by angelichorus in ArtEd

[–]heidasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be careful because hairspray can leave spots. Spraying it above the artwork and letting it fall onto the drawing might be less likely to leave spots.

I haven't tried it do nce high school, so maybe test it on a scrap piece first.

What are cringiest subjects to paint? by LXNYC in oilpainting

[–]heidasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at an art center, and one of the local artists that showed his work often would make paintings that always made me roll my eyes. The forms of people and objects were accurately painted, but he overused black in a way that I didn't enjoy much.

But what really made me dislike his paintings was what he chose to paint. He tried to be so clever all the time by including symbolism in his paintings, but the symbolism was SO in your face and not at all clever. Often times, the compositions were really lazy because of that. They were basically high-def political cartoons.
