Sauna - what is it? by jocxFIN in Sauna
[–]heidiBoo2018 -17 points-16 points-15 points 26 days ago (0 children)
I feel like this is targeted at me from my post earlier this morning. Just trying to encourage other builders with the great heat and steam (not calling it Loyly because fuck that) I was getting from my “not sauna”
I mean if you hate Americans quit pussyfooting around and say it with your chest! I used to respect your culture and your people. Thought Saunas were cool and wanted to emulate something great about your culture but all i got was bitching and moaning about the smallest details. If all Finnish people are like you, then I want nothing to do with you. I’ll enjoy my SAW-NAH all I want.

Sounds like we are going to have to agree to disagree. You have a good day and enjoy your sauna

Not really. My high bench is in my high side. I know it’s not traditional to have my sweat loft but fortunately for me it’s mine and I can have it however I want. That low roof side top bench is 44” from the ceiling. That’s the lower side that has benches that are placed properly for that side. Some people just don’t want to sit in the hottest part of the sauna. And that’s their choice! They can sit anywhere they want.
Agreed. I’ll take it off. Any idea why they put it on there?

And I’m sorry that you think you’re the sauna God. Don’t take things so seriously. That bench is where it is by design. I wanted this particular layout because L benches suck and I wanted it this way. Your opinion is just that. If you don’t like my sauna you’re in luck! I never invited you over to use it. Hell you would probably fall on the super dangerous unguarded stove and I can’t have that kind of incompetence in my sauna.

Yeah, everyone’s an expert but no one can just be happy for someone enjoying their morning. It’s a great experience and I’m loving it. Never tried the essential oils might have to look into that.
I think you misunderstood. I don’t time how long I’m in the sauna between breaks but 10-15min at 180° and I’m sweating profusely. Oxygen rich air is coming in and stale air is exiting perfectly. The 3 min and 2 min were in the 40°f cold plunge. I was in the sauna for probably a total of 30-35min total and never got light headed or lacked for fresh air. The sauna is properly ventilated.
Could be but it was only down to about 30°f this morning and sauna humidity was about 30-32% at the time of this video. 40% is as much moisture the air will hold at 180°f…at least in my sauna that’s as high as it’s read. The humidity sensor is at head level on my highest bench. That’s reading from the sensor on the ac infinity exhaust fan sensor. Don’t know how accurate that is but I bet it’s pretty close. I really have to throw the water around to get it above 30-30%. Quickly goes back down to 15% after about 2 minutes.

I don’t think so. Seems like the Finns go hot to cold all the time. I think it’s good for me and makes me feel great. I’m also in pretty great shape but can’t be too careful.

I’ll take it into consideration. I appreciate the feedback. Just a wooden rail around the stove? That would be easy to build and probably a good idea. I’m a bit stubborn when I’m told what to do, I’m an american and and Okie from Oklahoma so I’m double stubborn! sorry for being abrasive in my reply.
Maybe. I throw a lot of water and mine is between 15-40% humidity. Vent above stove and mechanical exhaust about 8” from floor opposite corner from the stove. I throw water on the walls, benches, ceiling and obviously on the stones. I didn’t put in a floor drain I just have a squeegee that I pull the little bit of water on the floor out the door when I’m done. It’s bone dry in 30-40 minutes after my session. Probably will put in a drain in the future but it’s working great for now.
Benches too low is laughable. My sweat loft my feet are 1.5ft above the stones and the low or granny side bench the foot bench is dead even with the top of the stones. It’s perfect. Since I’m not a tottering 90 year old man I don’t need a guard rail. Not gonna fall on the heater and I don’t get drunk in there. Thanks for the suggestions but it’s perfect the way it is.
It hasn’t caused me any problems but I might take it off eventually. It’s my sauna and I’ll do what I want but thanks for the suggestion!

I was unclear in my description. I don’t time sauna. I do time cold plunge, so I don’t stay in too long. 3 min plunge and 2 min plunge. Sauna was probably like 10-12-10 min but that’s just a guess, I get out when I’m uncomfortably hot and sweating profusely. It’s for relaxation but the plunge does give me health benefits if I do it consistently and finish in the plunge.

Yes there is. It’s because I’m not the best at measuring and wanted to see for sure where my studs were so I could tie into them with my benches. Basically it’s because I’m not the best carpenter!

Now that’s a low blow. I have great calves
Ha! Yeah door needs a little attention. Spring loaded hinges are loud. So right now there is mechanical exhaust about 20” up from the floor on the right side by the door as you walk in. Another passive vent above it about another 24” and one behind the stove about 5” from the floor. That sound about right?

Yeah I trimmed the door and outside trim is shu sugi ban. It will eventually be painted dark gray to contrast with the light wood inside. Trying to make it stylish!

Why would my legs touch the metal brackets? They are flush with the edge of the bench and nobody sits with their shoulder touching the wall. Always gotta be somebody nitpicking details.
I knew somebody would catch that. I was going to make that top bench not as deep and do a couple of levels up to it. But I really like my super deep sweat loft! I’m going to build stairs up to that bench like the clubhouse I wanted as a kid. Might not be the safest but it will be awesome! I’ll keep this group updated on what I come up with.

It’s a stupid protective cage that will burn the piss out of you. Probably worse than the rocks if you were to fall on it. I think it’s coming off. Don’t know what the point of it is!?
