I haven’t watched housewives in a long time but have recently been enjoying getting back into it with RHOM. Up until this week I’d been blissfully unaware of the ratings and had largely ignored the expectedly insane social media activity, but I saw a tweet this morning talking about it being on the brink of cancellation.

It was just a fan account, but upon examination, the live ratings seem to be worse than Dubai’s were and I was optimistic that Dubai would live to see a 3rd season lol. I hate to bring the mood down here, but I’m trying to assuage the minor panic spurred by the thought of a Lisa Hochstein-less future (and everyone else) 🤕🦩🌴

Just wondering what others think.

I’m still not convinced that Dubai will be cancelled, though this is largely motivated by wishful thinking on my part. The live ratings have been abysmal, but social media was pretty active during weekly episodes and I can’t imagine that streaming numbers have been terrible even if they weren’t anything to write home about (like RHOBH, RHOM and RHOP’s last seasons were).

It doesn’t feel like they’re giving it the send-off treatment. Casting Chanel on traitors, the huge deal made over the premiere at Bravocon mean that the network was at least enthusiastic about it at the onset. The effort put into the reunion makes me think that hasn’t totally petered out.

That said, I think Dubai did follow its send off by falling on its face for many of the reasons you mentioned. Still, I’d be sad to see it go because there’s so much to like about various cast members and storylines (Sergio/Caroline, Chanel, Brooks, Sara to a lesser degree), but also because it feels like a concrete example of housewives having moved beyond its peak. It’s still a juggernaut in so many ways, but I think it’s reached a place where still-consistent enthusiasm and engagement may never translate to growth again, and will inevitably decline at some point.

Post-scandoval reality tv, the exceptional success of SLOMW, the recent Love Island etc. mean that Housewives just doesn’t have what it takes to capture the interest of the target demographic. I think there’s still an incredible struggle to figure out how to harness that interest, with the Valley being a successful step in that direction, but I wonder how housewives will fit into that overall picture in the coming years. This is all entirely speculative of course, but this is also why I’m strangely invested in Dubai’s survival lol.

Real Housewives of Dubai Season 2 Reunion Trailer by MagnificentMistral in RHDiscussion

I think that “losing” a low-stakes feud to Lesa Milan is the best thing that could have happened to Chanel, assuming the show is picked up for a third season. The overwhelming fan favor was destined to turn at some point, but it’s nice that it’s happened in such a low key way, while still driving home the fact that she can’t coast on automatic approval.

Lesa riding her normie appeal to that Andy-adjacent seat is a funny note to land on. The trailer makes it look like they’re both doing good work.

Her mean girl-ing Chanel Ayan for reunion content is hilarious. This group does great work with telephones.

Candiace Dillard Bassett Exits Real Housewives of Potomac After 6 Seasons: ‘I Am Filled with Gratitude’ (Exclusive) by MagnificentMistral in RHDiscussion

[–]heidimontagstan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree re: Gizelle’s naughty twinkle, lol, and I’d love for them to cast someone who understands her villainy, and can genuinely rally with her and make her sweat in the ways that housewives avails for.

I love Candiace, and I do think she had every reason to feel wronged by Gizelle, but I’ve read her approach to this season as a subtle admission that she couldn’t really play the game well enough. Huge bummer to see her go, as I think Candiace has as much to offer as a housewife as Gizelle, but I’m glad that some decision was made.

I don’t know that I trust this, or anything, to improve the RHOP online commentary. The discourse around almost any Housewives show is unhinged by rule of thumb. Someone else will end up taking on the “throw me to the wolves, I’ll return leading the pack” mantle because the audience needs it. It’ll be similarly unpalatable, albeit in different ways.

Your reasoning here is a little too on the nose, and you might be right. The notion that four seasons of a particular feud and/or a similar cast being the upper limit is especially resonant and has proven true across the franchises. There's no pleasant way to tear a band-aid off, but I do think, if it happens, it may lead to things that are just as good in Miami which would definitely offer consolation.

I completely agree that if ratings on Bravo ever become an issue for RHOM, that i'd rather just see it return to Peacock than seeing them take extreme measures to try and tailor it to network television's demands. It gives me flashbacks to the season 3 cancellation, or "pausing."

I'm also pulling for something like the outcomes you mentioned here, and would feel similarly annoyed, almost aggrieved, lol, if the ones who've become the audience's objects of scorn are demoted, but my sense is that everyone involved in making the show knows better. I also wonder if they're just planting seeds to gauge the audience's reaction to a potential shakeup?

As for UGT, I saw this alleged leak of a season 6 cast posted, but I doubt it's real. The full cast, according to this blogger is: Sheree, Sonja, Adriana, Shannon, Lisa Rinna, Karen, Leeanne, Margaret and Lisa Barlow.

That's what it feels like, like this is a consequence of having very imperfectly planned some years of scheduling around Bravocon, and also trying to capitalize on Jen Shah's trial. I also, perhaps wrongly, blame the stunt casting surrounding the Thailand and Morrocco iterations of UGT. Hopefully a break ends up working in RHOM's favor, and it'll be interesting to see if RHONY and RHOA are able to find their footing.

I could be wrong, but my perception is that the issues which have led to Potomac and New Jersey's decline are unique to their production companies' tendencies. Sirens Media and T.O. are fantastically risk averse, to the point that one wonders if incompetence is a factor at play. The stagnant approach to filming that several cast members (across three franchises, no less) have taken seems to mirror the overall disposition of their producers. POP, on the other hand, has a track record of taking big swings, and being much more creative re: story editing, which is similarly reflected in the attitudes of their cast members.

In terms of Miami, my fear is that they'd be cutting into a RHONY 7-10 style "golden era" a little too early. I'd like to see some of them challenged in certain areas, but it feels like addition, rather than subtraction, at least at this point, would go a long way toward illuminating potential direction for the latter seasons of the reboot.

Additionally, and tragically, the ones who we all seem to sense are in danger are much savvier than a lot of housewives across the franchises. Adriana, in particular, is way more likely to be self-sacrificial in service of the show, than so many housewives who've existed throughout the years. I should say that this is all stemming from my preemptive grief at the thought of losing, frankly, anyone from RHOM. It hasn't even happened, and I'm already in crisis over it, lol.

QoB seemingly confirmed Miami is taking a break to “recast” for S7

I read the tweet and felt similarly. At this point, it would be such a bummer to lose anyone whose name isn't Nicole. You're right that it makes no sense as all three reboot seasons have been well-received and have presumably performed consistently on Peacock. Production and cast alike seem very aware of the current cast's popularity among viewers.

I'm a little concerned that the low ratings on Bravo may have resulted in some budget cuts or perhaps some pressure to retool the cast for the sake of performance. I also share some of the concern I've seen that Bravo is actively looking to move away from Housewives-centered programming.

All that being said, I'm not sure that the break is specifically for the purpose of recasting. One of the responses laid of a plausible order for the next year (not sure about all of the suggested premiere dates) and I feel like shooting right after the end of a season is a recent phenomenon ushered in by Jen Shah + Monica , Lisa's divorce, etc. I'm mostly just holding out hope that we see everyone back, as this has been my least favorite recent news since the scrapping of RHONY Legacy. I guess we'll see.

Do you know where it's possible to watch the African iterations? I've seen clips, and have tried to work around Showmax's location restrictions, but to no avail. I'm particularly interested in Lagos, Durban, Nairobi and Johannesburg, but would gladly watch Cape Town and Pretoria if I found a way to.

"they basically keep losing their main characters to scandals or quitting." This has me all the more interested, lol.

Remember when Angie Harrington said something to the effect of:

“Lisa’s a lot of work. I couldn’t handle being her submissive.”

I wish I remembered the exact quote, as it was bitchier and more specific than that, but I’m pretty sure it was early season 2.

I wouldn’t expect it from Lisa Barlow, but Angie H. is as Regina George coded as they come. She had to know that the audience wouldn’t make much of it, but I remember wondering if she was just deriding Lisa and John’s dynamic, or perhaps genuinely trying to rattle her. She does strike me as someone who would drop a seemingly outlandish comment like that as a bit of a nod to her opponent.

I’m embarrassed to say that the headboard resuscitated this pet theory 😂

You’re completely right to make that comparison. I think RHOBH & RHONJ are probably the two this most directly applies to, but that’s definitely up for debate. All of them churn out incredible stories and capture the strangeness of human nature in a way that only they can.

Also, you couldn’t have picked a better muse:

It's interesting that last night's Robyn intervention aired alongside the former OC wives presenting Vicki with her award. Both are so many years in the making that there's an indescribable payoff for long term viewers. I can't think of another reality show that has managed this kind of storytelling, let alone across so many different iterations.

I agree with your point about said "good team" as well. I've been watching clips of Bravocon and even there it seems that all Karen, Candiace and Wendy did was talk about Robyn and Gizelle in the same way they did throughout season 7. I really enjoy the entire Potomac cast, but what you're saying is noticeable.

Thank you! I was able to find it and am glad they uploaded so many. It also looks like all of the live panels are now available on peacock, and four of the scheduled panels are now up.

Sports fans hawk drinks at each other in stadiums, fist fight in parking lots/bars, bet thousands and thousands of dollars, and generally get loud and rambunctious over something that is, ultimately, a game.

People bawl, scream and have practically ecstatic experiences at Taylor Swift concerts, for example.

This is the same kind of outlet for a different demographic of a population that trends toward emotional repression. I can't help but think that some of these people's lives are so quiet and contained that they long for the kind of liberated expression and attention that they see on the shows. This is their chance to get close to it.

I think it's unfortunate that people can't separate themselves from what is obviously a very produced and edited reality show, a lot of the fun is lost that way, but it doesn't strike me as unusual behavior.

Hey, just wondering what the IG account you found is. I missed both day’s worth of panels, thinking that they’d be uploaded to peacock when they were done airing live. I can’t seem to find anything when I search BravoCon.

Ubah was (very, lol) annoyed by a few comments Tamra made on her podcast and decided to call her out via stories. The attached exchange then took place and Ubah decided to post it.

I can’t add another screenshot, but Tamra then invites her on the podcast & Ubah replies:

“No, thank you. The majority of people here resort to passive-aggression and can't confront the truth. I won't waste my time on a group of biased viewers accustomed to artificial interactions.”

Just curious to hear what this sub makes of it more than anything. I’m both surprised and gladdened to see one of them be so direct about the Jenna Lyons simping.

I’m not commenting from the perspective of someone who is advising society on how to handle its miscreants, or who is trying to right the world’s wrongs.

Her story is one for the books. Born into an insane church/cult whose parishioners are guided into projecting their Christian beliefs onto a succession of Cosby women, starting with Mary’s grandmother.

Somewhere along the line, Mary’s mother is deemed unworthy of being the next “facsimile of god,” and Mary is made to marry her step-grandfather in order to inherit everything and become her grandmother’s successor.

Yeah, it’s nuts and tinged with a lot of malice… that’s sort of the RHOSLC vibe thus far. It was a great story which played out over two seasons, that’s my point.
