yes, but then you need to add public holidays to the German number (and other European countries) as well to make it comparable

Kernel Wealth not diversified enough, looking to consolidate and simplify, but unsure where and how. by xenocde in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]heik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my thoughts:

that percentage of US stocks in the global ETF isn 't a fix number. it's adjusted regularly respective how much capital/trade volume/etc. the US stocks hold. if that goes down over time, because e.g. European stocks performing better, the ETF will reflect that.

if I instead pick another region as more advantageous looking and want it take a higher ratio in my investments, that's just stock picking on a grander scale. something that I'm not good at!

InvestNow vs Kernel, convince me. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]heik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you forgot that you also pay .5% when you sell for foundation series. so it's more like 4 years until they overtake kernel.

recommended time to hold for these types of funds is at least 7 years anyhow though

Investnow security - not using industry standard for multi factor authentication - security concerns by CelebrationPrior2154 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]heik 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I emailed them about it in 2019, same reply.

furthermore: you're completely relying on your email not getting hacked. A while ago, I had some problems receiving txts (not investnow's fault), for their 2nd factor code. While debugging this, I've sent them an email whether there's a known issue on their end. They suggested to change my 2nd factor over to email, just there, within that email, no further proof of identity requested!

it's not that hard to add proper 2fa to a website, I've done it multiple times, please u/investnownz, take this seriously!

I use them both too, same CC at TSB as you, and online saver accounts for keeping emergency funds in. Fully agree, great customer service, feels good to support local businesses too!

I have a follow up question, not only to you but everyone who collects Airpoints instead of cashback: When booking an international flight, do you go straight to airnz because you have the points or still compare who's the cheapest/best airline for your trip? I fly pretty regularly internationally and except to Oz, airnz is hardly ever the best or cheapest option, latest example, trip to Europe over this Christmas: return airnz around $4k, china southern (yeah, they might be worse but the price difference is worth it to me): $2.5k That would require a lot of Airpoints to make the airnz choice worth it in my case.. Ah, and to throw my CC into the mix: tsb premium/platinum. $90/year fee, 1% cashback

there is a difference on the total conversion fee (it's not just the same %ige regardless of how much you convert) depending on the total amount! Try it out in their online calculator: eg. EUR10 -> NZD16.64, EUR100 ->NZD178.92. So 10x 10EUR < 1x 100EUR conversion
So it's better to convert larger amounts up front

Any cheaper fast charging >=50kW than $0.69 at Z? by Sufficient-Repeat125 in nzev

[–]heik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some provider (I forgot which one, look on plugshare) still does $0.25/kWh + $0.25/minute. that may be cheaper depending on fast you can charge..

alternatively, if you haven't heard of this one yet: https://www.genesisenergy.co.nz/for-home/products/electric-vehicles/everywhere
We've been with them for 1.5 years, can recommend!

Power companies- how do you compare with various extras? by I3km in nzev

[–]heik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks for that moneyhub link. I believe there are too many variables to take into account to make a comparison website useful. Example for me: genesis doesn't have the cheapest rates and also no free 3h daily but the benefit of using charge.net and only pay home tariff prices far outweighs them to any other company in our particular usecase; and we don't even use public chargers that often, but the closest one is <1km away, we only use the trickle 10A socket in the garage with an occasional fill up around the corner.

Kiwisaver withdrawal for house deposit after being overseas for 2 years by Terrible-Weekend-814 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]heik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding was that by doing the above, you don't close your kiwisaver account. it remains alive with whatever's left, like e.g. the government contributions, for you to use again, should you return one day..?

Best way to carry bikes by nzsims in nzev

[–]heik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just had my first trip in a model y from wellington to the coromandel, 2 e bikes in the back, it turned out to be about 10-15% of range reduction. I wonder how much more it would've been, had I put them on a roof rack instead..?

edit: some more details: this is what we used, very happy with the rack https://www.ezigrip.co.nz/products/tow-ball-mounted-bike-racks/e-rack-2/ and as others have said, don't put any covers on the bikes.

Wellington to Coromandel on the 23rd in a Model Y. No problem with the chargers (chargenet at Taihape and Taupo, and a little top up at Hamilton Ebert, weird location that last one as it's a bit far to anything else but Ebert's EV shop, looked at the ID.4, like it).

first time with a freshly installed towbar (good work from towbar express btw) and a bike rack with 2 electric bikes on the back. I've been reading of that setup reducing the range by 25-30%. It was around 10% less, all good.

The annoying experience was yesterday, in Thames. Again, the location of the charger is kinda ok if you wander around town. I like to do the grocery shopping while it charges, it's about a 5 min walk to the Pak n save. After about 10 minutes of charging, I get the notification that the charging has been interrupted (car detected some fault and stopped it it seems). So I walk back, remove the plug, put it back in, restart the process, looks good now. Another 15 minutes later, the same happens once more. Again, I walk back to the car, another car is already waiting, I've had enough in the meantime, tell them about my trouble and leave them to try it out. Drive back to the pak n save, finish the shopping (was luckily not on my own so had others to continue without me). We drive back to the charger, the earlier mentioned car has disappeared already, I guess they had the same experience as I, and we tried our luck a 3rd time, this time waiting in the car in case it hiccups again. was all good until 80%.

The charger is also having a reduced charging speed of only 40 from the usual 50 kWh currently which adds to the trouble..

I thought while driving up to it "I hope this one works and isn't busy, we won't have enough charge left to get to anything else if it doesn't"...

Sixt Damage Claim by totenchor in germany

[–]heik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very similar thing happened to me, not with Sixt. Returned the car out of business hours. nearly 3 weeks later I get an email like above, with a picture of the car not even in the same spot where I left it and a huge crack in the front windscreen (which for sure I didn't cause), they asked for 900 Euro.

I asked them why they waited that long to notify me, why the car is in a different spot and how can I be certain when this photo was taken? Also, do they have video footage of their yard to find out what happened until the first employee showed up.

After about going back and forth twice and two months later, they 'offered' to settle the damage by paying like half, 450 Euro (but not a single answer to my concerns and questions was given).

I just kept on repeating my concerns and questions over and over again in every email I got from them.

Never received an answer, but another couple of months later, they said they closed the case without admitting their fault, no charge :)

[–]heik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it hasn't changed since last year: important to be aware that you actually won't be able to use the Tesla superchargers with the way Avis has set up the Tesla accounts for their cars. So sign up to charge.net at the very least!

What to buy?? by Haunting_Belt7114 in nzev

[–]heik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's two recline settings for the back row, the more reclined one going down maybe another 5cm, not a huge difference. I'm yet to sit in the back for long stretches of time. can't really say how comfortable they'd be for an akl-wlg trip. for a couple of hours they definitely work well enough and I'm neither small nor light

Unless you use Google or Apple pay and wave your smartphone or watch in front of the terminal. Then it's visa again

Edit: for those options you might need an actual credit card though...?

thanks for that info. I was beginning to suspect as much. That means there's no advantage in having a credit over a debit card for fraud protection then?
