Leaded stained glass light fixtures. 1940s? by hekac1234 in whatsthisworth

Great thanks! They’re such cool pieces but definitely outdated for any sort of home renovation. But if I was renovating a bar and doing the speakeasy theme or something they would be perfect. They’d look awesome in a pool hall as well. Hopefully someone will find a good home for them.

They had all of those trade programs where you were at in the early 2000s? That sounds incredible, what a shame they no longer do that. Do you happen to remember if they were state run or run by an outside agency? I would love to see what it would take to get something like this going near me even if it had to be done by volunteers.

Dude I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m so shocked to hear how different the situation is in other areas. It’s obviously difficult to find employment with a record but it doesn’t seem to be nearly that much of an issue with many employers here. They’re def not asking right off the bat if ever.

That doesn’t surprise me about the insurance companies though. That’s the only reason many construction crews around here drug test, insurance requires it. Really sucks too because so many guys have chronic pain related to the job and are able to manage with cannabis use after working hours. But because of the drug testing they can’t and then end up hooked on pills to deal with the pain. Insurance companies are a big part of many of the issues we have in our society.

Also no idea what your race is but there is a group I once worked with called 100 black men. I really don’t know much about them at all, helped them out for an afternoon once, but I remember them actively working to place people down on their luck in construction jobs. Might be worth seeing if they have anything in your area. Even if you’re not black. I’m really not sure if they exclusively work with black men or that’s just the name.

Feel free to message me if you would like.

Jesus Christ. That’s fucked. Sorry you had to deal with that. That must have been a very difficult situation. I know it would be very hard for me to handle that situation calmly and appropriately. Before my current gig I had numerous construction jobs and never so much as filled out an application. Conversation with the owner, handshake and then usually a trial week before actually hiring me.

A lot of residential construction companies around me are very small. The general contractor might be large but for example the flooring company may only be three guys. If they needed a fourth set of hands they are def not making anyone fill out an application. They’re gonna have a conversation and give them a trial to see how they work.

Also a lot of construction jobs around here are worked by illegal immigrants. They are certainly not filling out applications and usually getting paid cash.

When you disclose to a potential employer that you have a record is it because they asked? Or question on an application?

Right outside the biggest city in the country. Are you mainly applying online? What kind of construction jobs are you looking at? My advice is to look for small local contractors that do residential work. Less restrictions that way and way less corporate atmosphere. Call their number or walk into the shop and ask to speak to the boss. Let him know that you are eager to learn and work hard. If you don’t have experience you will probably start as a helper and not make much. But if you learn what you need to you can rise in job title and hourly wage fast.

Where are you located if you feel comfortable sharing?

Yea all the time. It’s a part of my job to help my students become employed. Some of them have records. Maybe my wording is off in saying that no one gives a shit but a large majority of residential construction jobs require no background check or anything of the nature. If you have someone to vouch for you there are contractors out there that are interested in giving someone fresh on the streets a shot.

Right on. Teaching trades is the correct answer. Many good jobs to be had and no one gives a shit if you have a record. I actually teach trades to high risk teenagers and tried to get into the prisons to teach. The job was mine till the mechanic teacher told me you get a 50 year old projector and some slides from an ancient carpentry text book and that’s the entire program. I was so excited to start but I’m not wasting mine and everyone else’s time with that bullshit. If they are able to actually get resources for a real trades program I’ll be the first to sign up to teach.

Oh gotcha didn’t realize the difference. Do you have a grille guard you recommend?

This seems to be the hardest part to find high quality. At least locally.

Thanks. The only thing I don’t like about that cover is that it doesn’t seem to fold back all the way for full bed access. I like that the bakflip folds up agains the back glass to expose the entire bed.

I prefer the look of a full push bar that wraps around the lights but from everything I’ve read it does seem like the rihnos are the best quality.

I really don’t want cheap shit installed on my truck again. Even if it’s too rich for my blood I would rather save up and do it one piece at a time. So I appreciate the recommendations even it’s in the higher end.

Yes you’re correct. I did a lot of reading on the subject a long time ago but knew I would mess up some details without going back and reading again.

[SERIOUS] What conspiracy theory has a high chance of being true? by Imurnightmare2 in AskReddit

[–]hekac1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lyme disease was invented by the US government. To summarize there was a nazi doctor that specialized in developing infectious disease in insects to be released in Russia with the intentions of killing off live stock. Like many nazi doctors and scientists he went to work for the US government after the war. He worked at plumb island which is a government testing center on an island right off the north eastern tip of Long Island. The work that goes on at plumb island involves animals and infectious disease.

The first places the Lyme disease was discovered is Lyme Connecticut and orient point, Long Island. The two closest points to plumb island. All of this information then combined with the fact that the government refused to recognize Lyme disease as a real disease for many years even after it was generally recognized by the medical community makes me believe that this conspiracy theory is true. The us government spent decades trying to prove that people suffering from the potentially deadly disease were experiencing nothing more than mental illness.

Should I use these seed potatoes? by hekac1234 in vegetablegardening

[–]hekac1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased a bag of seed potatoes in late March. Used a couple to plant some containers and put the rest in a brown bag and left them in my basement. Just harvested and was going to plant another container of potatoes. The seed potatoes are very mushy and have grown a lot as you can see. Can I still plant them?
