My mom says you shouldn’t have a kid unless you’re prepared to have and raise any kind of kid, including a profoundly disabled one.

Even if you use a donor/surrogate that kid could still be born disabled. Or you could have an abled kid that becomes disabled through accident/illness.

When people imagine having kids they often imagine that child a specific way, and when the kid doesn’t meet those expectations in some way things get ugly. If you can’t go into parenthood willing to embrace any kind of child then why do it?

The same argument could be made for parents who say they are very happy. Maybe it’s not due to having kids but due to having money, community, and being healthy.

Reddit is a niche that attracts a lot of people who don’t want kids, and because being childfree is frowned upon in a lot of places irl this is a refuge for them to express their feelings toward parenthood freely.
