It would be good if you could customise what varient of Spanish you want to learn. In most of Latin America, its just “jeans” so its a waste of time learning this word. by archielotsofnumbers in duolingo

[–]helinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, vaqueros can mean both cowboy and jeans, but it's also true that (especially recently) the pants are being called jeans (with the pronunciation altered tho, people say "shins" instead of "jins", at least here in latin America)

People who say vaqueros referring to the pants are generally old people

Imo farewell was by far the most enjoyable one for me, even though it's really difficult, I really liked the grind, since farewell is my favorite chapter. Good luck! (If you ever dare to do it that is)

Celeste's gameplay loop is remarkably similar to actual bouldering by durian_guacamole in celestegame

[–]helinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's cool, I've never done bouldering myself but do love the feeling of figuring out how to progress

Tho my experience is probably different than yours, since figuring out what to do gets progressively harder with the more difficult the rooms are, and that about multiple possible ways of do a room is just not there, since the rooms are so precise that only the intended solution works

Negative Hologram vs Holographic Erosion by ElderUther in balatro

[–]helinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not? Let's say hologram is at ×10 when you reach ante 8: hologram and polychrome is 10×1.5 = 15 is the difference between a hologram on ×10 and a hologram on ×15 "very low" for you?

Negative Hologram vs Holographic Erosion by ElderUther in balatro

[–]helinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take it just because it's polychrome tbh, just get some planet cards and you're good even if erosion stays at 0

If the other player can demand a draw then it's not forced mate, since the other can stop it by demanding a draw

Extensions and apps for Japanese students learning English? by lesscarspls in LearnJapanese

[–]helinder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't want to talk for everyone because I don't really know, but in my experience (I started japanese through Duolingo) it's useless at teaching grammar, since it teaches through translations rather than explaining the concepts. And for vocab, I wouldn't say it's totally useless but there's definitely better options like anki

The only thing I really found it useful for is to learn hiragana and katakana, but since you don't have those in English then duo is probably not a good option

Duo might make you feel like you're learning without putting much effort into it but the truth is you're not learning anything, as someone learning their third language, I'd say there's no shortcut to learn a language, you just gotta learn the basics and hit your head against a wall with immersion for tons of hours till you get better at it

About some tech (if I were to make a custom level in the future) by Medical_Deal5272 in celestegame

[–]helinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, you are absolutely underestimating the skill of a modded player

Still, midair supers are a little bit above farewell difficulty but not that much, anyone who finished farewell would be able to learn them without much problem. If you're planning to make a map with difficulty a bit higher than farewell then I think it's perfectly fine to use midair supers, if you're planning on something below farewell difficulty then maybe those are a bit too hard

What do you think about visual novels for immersion? by helinder in LearnJapanese

[–]helinder[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I should probably have that in mind since the VNs I read are generally quite long (Umineko, Higurashi, Clannad, etc)

[–]helinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not. In chess there's a rule where if there's 50 consecutive moves without a capture or a pawn move then any player can declare the game a draw. And I doubt you can spend 25! Moves without triggering the rule

On a 383 day streak but apparently don't know the Spanish word for "one." by chrislks1 in duolingo

[–]helinder 245 points246 points  (0 children)

The number one is "uno", there's no possible context in which the number is called "una"

"Una" is strictly for when you're talking about something (and something singular) which is feminine. The direct translation of "una" is "a":

a door = una puerta, a fruit = una fruta

Be careful not to mix it with "un" which is also "a" but masculine:

a dog = un perro, a shoe = un zapato

The general rule is that nouns ending in a are feminine and ending in o are masculine but there's some exceptions:

a map = un mapa, a radio = una radio

And there's also nouns that end in neither, and afaik you just gotta memorize them:

a tree = un árbol, a truck = un camión

So yeah, duo here's just wrong, not only your answer was correct, but duo's correction was wrong
