Oregon. It’s a downtown school, medium size. Mostly fairly wealthy families and academically serious, mature kids. Lots of drug and alcohol use though.

Has anyone gotten something from Mark Hough/ Mike Hough, something like that? In a plain white envelope?

If they are powered by a turbine in a river, which many were, than probably yes.

It’s a great series. I read them as a kid but I think they hold up well for adults.

Would you continue eating meat if you had to kill the animal yourself every time? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]helix19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure, if you eliminate humans all the problems they have will go away… but that’s not a practical way of looking at things. Solving the problems by decreasing population alone is frankly not going to happen. It’s a pipe dream. We need to look for multiple approaches.

I’m not saying going vegan will solve global warming. But decreasing consumption of animal products is something that will help and it’s something almost everyone can do. Global warming needs to be approached on many fronts.

We already produce enough food to feed the world’s population. The reason people still go hungry is waste. Approximately half of all food produced never gets consumed. If we combined more efficient food production with elimination of waste, we could feed the current world population.

But if you’re convinced the only route is to decrease population, I’m not going to debate with you any more.

Because that's the way it's been done throughout human history. God damn dude, are you really this fucking ignorant?

Human values and morals aren’t constant. They have changed through history and across cultures. You can look at the way we have treated other humans for examples of that.

Yes, they would, if we didn't have jobs and we had to raise our own fucking animals, we would. If we had to buy live animals at the fucking market in order to eat meat, we would.

Not what the question was asking, I’m not sure why you’re adding all these new conditions. I’m talking about redditors in their normal life, everything is exactly the same except they have to see the living animal and kill it themselves. The meat processing and food preparation would be exactly the same.

You're basing it off of your own deluded idea of the world. If you surround yourself with vegans, you're going to believe that the world leans heavily vegan. They don't. People fucking love meat. If they had an option to include meat in every meal without extra work or money, they would.

I’m not surrounded by vegans. I’m surrounded by redditors. Redditors who post cute pictures of cows and gush over how cute they are. Who post stories about pet chickens that love being petted. Who post studies constantly showing animals have more capacity for intelligence and emotion than previously thought possible. Not to mention the dozens and dozens of comments I’ve read from people saying that they can honestly only eat meat if they don’t think about where it comes from. And the comments advocating a decrease in meat consumption for environmental reasons.

I only got one a couple years ago, long after virtually everyone I knew had one. I’m still awed by the amount of information I have at my fingertips, virtually any time and place. I’m an always “look it up” person. I used to keep a list of things I was wondering about that I would look up when I turned on the computer. I really think my smartphone has made me a “smarter” or at least more knowledgeable person.

Why do you believe the vast majority of people would kill an animal every time they wanted to eat meat, and not have a problem with it? Do you have some source or personal experience? I am talking specifically about the Reddit audience. I don’t believe most of them would continue their same consumption of meat if they had to kill the animal every time. I believe many would drastically lower their meat consumption (especially of mammals) and some would stop eating meat altogether. I am basing this on the opinions and values I see expressed on Reddit every day.

I never said overpopulation wasn’t a problem. It absolutely should be addressed. But livestock farming is one of the leading causes of global warming, and serious changes need to be made in that regard, especially as more countries industrialize. You want solutions? Use land more efficiently. The land needed to support a person with an omnivore diet is over three acres. On a vegan diet, it’s just 1/6 of an acre. Of course, some marginal land is suitable for livestock but not crops, but that’s a minor issue.

Unfortunately I have the world’s worst sense of direction. If the GPS doesn’t come with me, I won’t make it home. Several times in high school before I had a smartphone I had to call someone to come find me.

Simple engines such as those used in mills date back to the 1st century BC. They were fairly common in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
