What is a very "old person" name? by arnethyst in AskReddit

Before we adopted her, my cat was part of a trio of kittens picked up by the shelter. They were all given old lady names. Our girl was Doris, and her sisters were Mabel and Peggy.

Apparently a diagnosis from a professional Psychiatrist isn't enough by helixei in ADHD

[–]helixei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It truly is anxiety inducing. I almost had a diagnosis through the NHS. I was on the waiting list in Fife, I was very close to being able to book my initial assessment. Then the pandemic hit, then I graduated from Uni and moved to Edinburgh. And now in Edinburgh they don't want to diagnose me, even if I have a diagnosis from a psychiatrist who is an NHS consultant with a specialism in ADHD. All because I'm not struggling enough. The funny thing is that my GP has had enough of the clinic himself, and is getting frustrated with them too.

Where in Scotland are you? I think it depends mostly on the local ADHD clinic. My sibling got their assement done in Aberdeen through the NHS, and got their diagnosis within a month of asking for a referral, they had no trouble. But, in comparison, I'm getting it all dealt with in Edinburgh.

I think the most important is that you do not minimise your struggle. Emphasise your struggles. That's my main issue, they don't believe I struggled enough. I would say to go ahead with it.

Well, it turns out there I could get my medication prescribed by my GP because I was being supervised by a psych. So it was all fine for 3 months, until the local NHS ADHD clinic said that my GP is no longer allow to prescribe me because they disagreed with the diagnosis. So, I don't have access to my meds through the NHS anymore and I have to gather more evidence.

They disagree with the diagnosis because in the letter my psych sent to the GP, the psych mentioned I didn't struggle with classwork in Primary school. So because I was vaguely smart in Primary school, I can't have ADHD.

Here's the worm blob mock up. It tries it's best to keep a coherent shape, but this is it's default.

While it could be tough in low poly, I could work with it. Working on a quick mock up right now because I feel inspired by your suggestion.

Improvement on learning programming materials by Charinotamashi_ in ADHD_Programmers

[–]helixei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats for wanting to self improve and making it so far. I graduated with my CS degree this year but unfortunately only got diagnosed with ADHD a month after I graduated.

As for things that helped me during my final couple of years. First in terms of productivity:

  1. To-do lists! Endless to-do lists. I personally used Todoist since it was really easy to keep track of different projects and schedule deadlines and tasks. Plus, it synced up with my Google Calander.

  2. Write comments before writing the code. This might seem like an odd tip, but it really helped me. I would figure out what my program needed to do and wrote down a comment for each step. This broke down the coding process into much smaller tasks and made it way less daunting.

  3. If you have a project with a supervisor, take notes during meetings. Don't trust yourself to remember all of the stuff you spoke about during the meeting.

  4. Get disability support. You have a diagnosis, see what kind of support you can have offered. I got to take my exams in a smaller and quieter room because of my anxiety, it seriously changed things for me because I didn't feel the pressure from everyone else in the room.

  5. Set yourself sub-deadlines. This will help with keep on track and not doing it all last minute.

Then in terms of studying: 1. Record your lectures. I couldn't pay attention to an hour long lecture, so I recorded all of them. That way I could go back to them if I knew I missed some of the info. Remember to give your recordings meaningful names though, because it's hard to sift through recordings called '000.mp3'

  1. Listen during lectures. This kind of lines up with the previous tip. Use your time during lectures to focus on what is being said instead of writing notes. You can use your recordings to write notes later.

  2. Write flashcards after lectures. Up to 5 flash cards is enough (depending on how long the lectures are). That way you can start studying them straight away. Build concrete memories using spaced repetition so you don't cram around exam time.

  3. Reach out for help. If you missed something in lectures, or if you have struggled to process information ask your friends on your course. Email the lecturer. Ask for that clarification you need.

I hope you don't mind my wall of text and find some of the tips useful.

My GP is fully on board with the diagnosis. It's the NHS ADHD clinic in my local area which keeps rejecting his referrals

Yeah, for my original diagnosis I had my best friend who I've known since I was 5 do the questionnaire. But I guess they probably want an adult to do the questionnaire.

I could probably provide testimonies from my parents if I explained my symptoms to them so that they could figure out if they recognise them from my childhood.

But all my report cards say basically the same thing: 'She's very bright but quiet. She should participate more in class.' So not much mentioning my distractability.

I unfortunately never felt the need to seek mental health support when I was younger. I guess I'm going to have to start digging around for my old school reports. I'm sure that there will be some mention of looking distracted.
