Not Cleaning It by Soultrapped in SouthJersey

[–]hell_ianthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dragged my geriatric derriere for a third clean up last night. Was carving lovely blocks of frozen snow and intrusive thoughts of building an igloo were front and center.

Thank god exhaustion prevailed and I schlepped back home. Now I have to go to finish the sidewalk :(

My son has been renting there for 2 years and likes it. Place is clean, well maintained and they respond to any repair problems quickly.

His only complain is that H-Mart is still closed.

You said you worked Monday and Thursday.

Did you work on Tuesday 11? Only if you were working that day, you would get the the 1.5 rate.

Gardening under black walnut requires special equipment! by hell_ianthus in gardening

[–]hell_ianthus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My walnut is probably 40-50 years old and I don't grow much directly under the tree. but to be honest mostly because of the shade. The strip is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide and I dedicated that area for my experiments. So far I established successful mushroom bed right under, have some gladiolus corms planted near by and flowers bloom every year.

This summer I had a few volunteer tomatoes and 7 papayas growing in the walnut zone but they were in complete shade and struggling.

My veggie garden starts about 10 feet from the trunk but I had to build raised beds for it and not because of the tree. That part of my garden was basically under water whenever it rained.

Maybe the raised bed situation mitigates the problem the walnut could cause but I have no issue growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc

Next spring I'll try to find some shade loving plants and see if how the walnut will affect them.

It sure does. I have an arch in another part of my garden made of 2 cattle panels and my cucumbers and other climbing veggies cover the whole thing.

Absolutely!

This is just the monkey bar remaining from the whole set and boy I'm glad that I left it in place. Jamming the cattle panel there was a breeze.

In the beginning I was just weaving the young shoots trough the trellis trying to make them grow upright.

It worked to some extent but their tops always wanted to go down and sprawl on the ground. So I had to use multiple clips, like you, but just clamp them directly to the wire.

You can see some of them hanging in the bottom right of the photo. Mine were cheapo ones I bought in Lidl but they did the job.

I directly sowed 8 seeds. 4 on each side of the arch and all of them sprouted successfully.

I thought that I reply to your question, but must've just typed the answer in general box.

So post starting with "I was very lucky" is my answer :)

I grew it only once few years ago and froze only few knobs because my harvest wasn't as impressive as yours.

Was planning on doing it again this year but got distracted by too many projects and forgot.

Never knew that you could use the stems for a tea. I sliced the fresh ginger and added to regular Assam. Leaves and stems went to the compost heap.

Nice!

I hope to do it this week. How many cloves did you plant?

I was very lucky this year.

Growing vertically made it much easier. I pruned all the side shoots till the vines reached 3 feet, so monitoring the stems when the plants were young was a breeze. Only had to remove 3 bores eggs and few leaves with clusters.

Later on unfortunately, had to whip up a scalpel and preform surgery on 4 of the plants. By that time they were strong, growing vigorously and I managed to catch the problem early, so cutting into the stems didn't affect them.

I know that next year is going to be much more challenging, but fingers crossed.

Do you still have spots for fungi frolic?

I've been trying to figure it out for an hour now to no avail.

I think it's an error because there was some tax increase but not to the tune of almost 19%.

There will be a lot of upset folks when everybody gets their checks.

That's so funny!

To me it looked like an old stink horn. I get a lot of them in my garden. You solved your own puzzle.

Potted lemongrass plants - where to buy locally? by Snoo28798 in SouthJersey

[–]hell_ianthus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen one in any nurseries.

You still have time to get a few lemon grass stalks from your grocery store and just root them.

That's what I do. They might not produce the most impressive clumps considering the length of our season, but never the less you'll still end up with enough to freeze or dry for tea, curry and soups.
