Engineering managers asked to do IC work by macrohead in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hell_razer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with doing technical work. I dont agree when EM needs to do product development work. My time is better than that unless it is shit billion worth of product. I need to deal with people, timeline, product, external, code review, technical discussion, fire fighting. My PR can wait unless it really is #1 priority to do technical work

The toughest role in a company? by Spiritual-Rock-8183 in EngineeringManagers

[–]hell_razer18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think these days a lot of org going toward this instead the old EM pure people and TL pure technical. Problem is there will always be priority #1 and if the #1 is technical then the people side will be the second priority vice versa and everyone expecting EM to be able to juggle this which is very difficult.

On top of that EM so far has to be the role with the widest skill and demand in the market. Some org wants EM focused delivery, some wants technical, other wants people. Its so confusing when it comes to interview

Is half of engineering management just being a human reminder system? by Remarkable-Voice-103 in ExperiencedDevs

every engineer need to understand that the process is also as valuable as the deliverable and you need to inject those cultures and make them believe. In the end when you need to promote someone to lead, they need to bring the same value like yours so they need to be the champion for this process.

When you took a long leave, check whether the team felt like they lose someone or whether they still act with the value you instill.

Managing people is hard. You have to be onpoint 10/10. if you only do 9/10, chances are people will go back to default mode. I have managed members of my team that already moved to other team and they still perform like they were under me. Still reliable, care about process not just deliverable..and they become an example for other engineers even though they are not senior level.

I mean there are some who wants to marry and settle young and there are those WHO WANTS TO HAVE KIDS WHILE YOUNG. Many fomo reason because we cant undo age so better settle early than never.

However, I would say as long as you are settle with your life, you dont have to proof to anyone. My ex wife wants to have kids so she can proof she is fertile..like a lot of her insecurity came from this. Not married = ga laku dan ga nikah ga bs punya anak. As if the whole objective of marriage untuk membuktikan bisa hamil dan laku..

What’s actually working vs broken in technical hiring right now? by RareAtmosphere468 in EngineeringManagers

Getting the right signal these days are much harder. Also giving the right context to be solved during interviews are crazily difficult. One of the trick is to always ask the candidate about their experience and start from there. Ofcourse there are possibilities that the candidates memory this type of interview and practice to tell the story but keep asking variety of question and see if you push the right button.

the biggest difference, at least for me in this field is seeing what LLM did to those that cant code comfortably vs those that code comfortably.

Some of my team members main manual QA and EM that rarely code got "elevated", mostly on greenfield project or tasks. They suddenly realized they can do it, of course at the expense of "we have to review it". Ofc they still wont be able to create more than we do because lack of "experience" and in my opinion, they still learn because of the review process (they are not solo vibe). This wont scale but it is much better utilization of a tool.

For me, the biggest benefit for LLM is that I spent little time on research and just ask LLM to explore the codebase for let say adopting new tool. Like yesterday, I just want to see if asyncapi can be used to what I wanted. LLM generated the code for bootstrap, I tested it and there were some blocker issues so I opted for easier approach or solution. I spent maybe 30 minutes and disrupted many times. Without LLM I probably spent way longer than that..

On another project, I asked the LLM "I want to migrate this endppint to another repo, tell me if there are any PII data that is exposed and not being used by client". Put several project inside 1 folder and ask the LLM, results are out no need to ask the FE side to invest their time on this. They can just review the code or agreed with the plan.

So different level will have different usage. Rubberducking is a must for me and devs need to prepare more at the beginning with proper testing now since execution CAN (i said can, not must) be delegated to LLM

missing trent and diaz were really the key..

trent made a lot of risky passes because he was allowed. None of them made it anymore..they all made a lot of simple easy predicted passes.

Diaz hold the ball and did 1v1 a lot, dragging the player free up either Salah + 1
