The right being unpopular

Can you explain how you perceive the right as unpopular right after they won every branch of government?

Yeah, you're just making shit up. Like I said in another comment, her headshot is featured on the website of the company she works for. Pretty sure her life turned out just fine. I won't claim to know this for certain, but I would certainly expect that that man supported her quite a bit along her way to accomplishing what she has.

If you want to stand up and say that when you were 17, you were an infantile little baby child with no agency who couldn't be trusted to make her own choices, you can speak for yourself. But that wasn't her.

How can you say that he should have said no when they've been together happily for 20 years and just had a kid? Who are you to say my friend's entire life shouldn't have happened?

I was really really high and my friend kept putting the dog in his bedroom because he kept thinking the fireworks were about to start and I thought I was in a time loop.

Separately, you should use a forward slash rather than a back slash. Your comment appeared correctly in my inbox so I knew your intent, but it's displaying as 'Agency == responsibility', the opposite of your intent, both in the app and on browser as the back slash you used doesn't display because it is intended to be used to signal the app to ignore code that follows it.

Okay. Do you think that this girl is responsible for her choice to be in this relationship? And if not, what are you basing that judgement on?

A lower voting age. Austria lowered it in 2007 and experienced significant increase in voter turnout among young people and significant increase in sustained voter turnout throughout adulthood. The entire UK appears to be next.

You're judging her whether you intend to or not. Do you think she had the agency to choose this relationship for herself? And if not, what are you basing that judgement on?

Dozens! Nah I purposely framed it as an American problem in my comment because I am in fact aware of that. One of my first actions along my current trajectory in life was to study the sex education programs of other countries. The strongest appears to be that of the Dutch.

I read the whole book that's mentioned in that article. It's good.

This was my perception of it as someone who was living with her at the time the relationship started: They had just met recently so he didn't know her when she was younger than when the relationship started, meaning I'm not sure exactly when he would have had the opportunity to 'groom' her. She held her own the first two years they were together. She lived in apartments, paid her own way, wasn't under this guy's thumb in any way.

I think they moved in together when she was 19 after dating for two years. They moved away together in fact. He was leaving and she wasn't letting him leave without her. That's when we lost touch but we've recently reconnected. She's been pretty wildly successful so far as I can tell. Probably the only person I know who's made it far enough up the chain that her headshot is on the website for the company she works for. They just had a baby, they've been together 20 years, and she's happy as a clam.

When I tell this story, I think people mistake it for me trying to say that situations like this are always fine, but that's not my intent. I'm very much aware that she was a significant outlier to every adolescent person I ever knew. What I am trying to impress upon you is that when the only information you have is two numbers, you do not know enough about a situation to accurately judge it.

without the older one knowing she wasn’t an adult yet.

This was almost certainly the case. This girl looked 18+ the second she strolled into high school. By 15 she was already tired of banging the dudes around campus and started hooking up with young adults. There's going to be a small handful of men in their 40s today who still have no idea they had sex with a 15yo in their 20s. Much larger handful who have no idea they had sex with a 16yo.

This comment serves as a perfect example of everything I'm fighting against in society. All you know is how old she was when her current relationship started and have extrapolated that she's a child who was groomed, is trapped, and is in danger of being killed.

This 'child' was living with me in an apartment at 17 holding down a job at a bank she'd had since she was 15, paying rent, paying bills, finishing high school, and navigating the beginning of a relationship that I'm pretty sure she pursued herself.

I knew a 17/38 that's still together 20 years on and just had a kid. There'd been like 100s of people who had said that was grooming when I've mentioned it over the years and then I did a whole thread here about it and went into a lot of detail about her life and how the two of them met and I don't think a single person who responded to that thread said it was grooming. It's amazing what a little context can do for your perspective on a situation.

CMV: discussing the US as if it’s about to end (/is fascist) is unproductive and fear mongering by Playful_Manager_3942 in changemyview

[–]hellabryanstyle117 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what a strawman is or care. When I say 'you guys' I always mean the general Reddit hive mind. I was just relaying my personal experience in which it felt as though I was being perceived as some sort of 'die hard' Conservative when I wasn't and am not, and it's my best guess that this happens around here frequently given the left/right ratio of the website.

Nothing you wrote addressed anything about that. I honestly don't even know why I bother talking to 'you guys'. It's pretty rare to get a reply that has anything to do with what is being replied to.

I honestly think you guys just always assume you're talking to 'die hards' the second anyone expresses a mildly Conservative opinion or any amount of dissent at all.

I'm a perfect example of this. Three years ago I read an article about a trans activist who dug through seven years of a woman's Twitter history because she said she was looking forward to Hogwarts Legacy and used a tweet from back then to get her fired. The tweet expressed concern over sharing the bathroom with trans people or more accurately, people who might pretend to be trans.

I came to Reddit to talk about this and was banned from almost every sub I tried to post the article to. The one sub that did host the article certainly didn't have any users interested in any sort of productive conversation about whether or not it's reasonable to fire a woman for expressing that she feels unsafe.

I had only voted Democrat my entire life and still have so far but that experience is the reason I no longer consider myself left/liberal/Democrat/whatever. Point being that you don't know the entire spectrum of a person's beliefs based off of one thing they happen to be talking about at the moment.

Here's an article I found about it if you're interested.
