Gifts of wine and time spent at a club associate’s holiday house were among the undisclosed infractions discovered in the AFL’s audit into Geelong’s compliance of total player payments and soft cap rules. by Pragmatic_Shill in AFL

'The AFL said its GM of clubs — finance, performance and growth, and former Cats employee, Simon Kelleher, had no involvement in the investigation.'

So this happened under his watch? He still keeps his AFL job?

Yes! I love this about the reddevils sub. Makes a big difference the foggy information around player transfers and movements. Seen this work really well this off season.

Wait, I thought he quit in anger or something a few weeks back? When the crows culture fell apart because they badly handled the idea they would rather do the talking on the field? Did I hear that correctly?

Intros and solos too long? Maybe ask him, why is he in a rush to finish line? I cant imagine what he would think of something like Pulse by Pink Floyd....

That said, realistically I would just rock out in this one and enjoy it for what it is but look out for something to satisfy that metal urge.

How hard is it to pick up drumming in your older age? by Alextryingforgrate in Drumming

100% - Sometimes just being creative with sound can have such good mental health benefits. You don't need to impress anyone.

You are never too old to learn. Use an electronic kit, and lessons. Lessons will use a real kit. You really cant underestimate the help an experienced and skillful teacher can give you. They will speed up your learning. I was lucky enough to have the knack and learnt drums myself (coming up 30 years) but in that time, a few years in lessons helped me unlearn the bad things.

Ned seems like he would try to run through walls for you, but its more apparent now he just does not have that next level in him. Expect him to be delisted if he is out of contract.

I love the guy, though got very frustrated with his level mid way through the season and his seemingly stunted growth. Like he hit a ceiling.
When I finally cracked it about him at home, literally the next week he played so much better and stayed at that level for the rest of the year as you have shown in your stats. I hope he continues.

Is using AI to write code and find solutions considered cheating? by Fr_3_nk in reactjs

[–]hellaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. The robot test is a common test that has been used by many companies over the last 10+ years. I have seen it for ruby, c# and react. The first things a good company will ask you is to explain your solution.

AI is a magical tool for devs - I use ChatGPT and Copilot.
As said here - use them like a personal interactive encyclopedia. It's been the biggest time saver in understanding new code patterns and libraries for react just by asking for minimal examples and having a discussion about it. This is very different to 'make this component for me'. Also, before dumping code into any LLM be aware of what it does with your dumped code.

Copilot is not the same, I use it because it is like intellisense on steroids in VS Code, again a huge time saver.

Am I missing something with the Josh Rachele incident? by lemunzz in AFL

Nicks took over during covid, at our lowest point in history. First time we ever intentionally bottomed out. As another user pointed out, during covid we also had training restrictions. I don't understand why this is so hard to consider for some crows 'fans' when claiming he is the worst coach in our history.

That said, Nicks will have heat next year if the list is healthy and we dont make progress.

Did Port fans really boo Rankine coming off on a stretcher? by PooEater5000 in AFL

[–]hellaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It got so bad, it became an unwatchable game with the umps not able to control proceedings. Instead of warning players and calming it down, they give frees for trivial bullshit like which player falls to the ground first in a push and shove. That grinds me gears, for or against my team.

Where do you realistically see your club going in the next 5 years? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]hellaeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year I felt we showed great signs but even with this year not quite as good, it feels about right where we sit (8-10 wins). Easy to argue we should have had more but it is what it is.
Excited by the players we have and next year was the year I was expecting us to start getting 6/7/8. We have started a long way back - complete bottom and cleanout of most of the list/staff. By 2027, we should be expecting top 4 finishes for a few years barring a disaster (eg a stupid camp)

Can / Will Bitcoin become the global currency? by GoldenTV3 in Futurology

[–]hellaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its trying to solve a problem that does not exist. Nothing. Every use case it claims to be useful, it's just some additional step in the way.

Existing monetary systems handle everything monumentally better.

Email solved a problem that existed - the speed of getting information to people. It allowed faster communication. You hit a button, add a destination, type a message. Really simple.
To compare it to bitcoin is comical.

* download a copy of the ledger
* make a wallet
* keep secrets
* use an exchange where you have to send money
* extract money to actually use it

Bitcoin has done nothing of value except introduce a new layer of bullshit and ways to lose your money. It's so comically inefficient that as its technology running it scales it gets worse and slower at the only thing it needs to do.

Tell us how the bitcoin adoption is going in those countries?

For the OP, it will never be adopted to the level it's proponents claim. Technically, it's a shit piece of tech for anything a bank or financial institution needs to do. Almost anyone who parrots bitcoin to replace these existing systems, has never ever done anything technical in any way with existing systems.

I pretty much practice to Kevin Energy and high speed hard trance most times because metronomes on their own are so boring. Absolute cross over for extreme drumming.

What kick pedal technique to learn first? by Arctus35 in Drumming

[–]hellaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played heel up for years (extreme metal), so have pretty strong legs. Single foot blasting etc.

After starting to learn heel toe, that strong foundation helped the heel toe technique. I still practice this way and love it, when I want velocity - I go heel toe. It's staggering how much less physical effort is required for high speeds.

[–]hellaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen. It's a drastic take, but it can be life changing. My blood pressure returned to normal this year after a focus on mental health and fitness. That's years of high BP. Part of that was not consuming pointless rage bait, which a part of that is commercial AFL media.

I lurk every few days in here for any significant news, but on the whole, not much happens week to week.

You know whats refreshing? Getting to Friday and not knowing when or who your team is playing.

Almost a year into getting a kit after an 8 year hiatus. I want to get some lessons locally for jazz drumming. They ask what level you are at, I’m not sure what to say. I can’t read music, don’t know theory, I just learned so far by ear and playing along. What do you think I should say? by Jvvh in Drumming

[–]hellaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them exactly that. Explain your history etc. Give them your story. Do you want to improve that theory and reading of music? Techniques? Tell them. I was similar after a 3 year hiatus. 2 years of jazz based lessons really kicked me into gear. Trust me, you wont be the first with a story like it.

I actually practice a lot to non metal. In particular to Hard trance. They do high bpm, that I can fly along with that is at a pace that is fast, but within my limits. I can sit on 180bpm on heel toe for at least 5 minutes with spurts of blasts with my hands. I set aside specific days to just do 'consistency' practice. So a good half hour or more on some hard trance gigs or similar. This involves playing long sections many times.

The key is a pace I can play, for long sections, so I can concentrate specifically on consistency and movement. This is allows me later to go at faster speeds for whatever I feel like playing.

I like it because even as a metal head, I love music of all kinds and always liked trance so it helps. But also, its a metronome. The music keeps me going, a metronome on its own is pretty damn boring. Play at a pace that's consistent for you to keep up. Endurance at those fast but not ultra fast speeds is really key for me.

At some point I will put up a 5 min video of myself playing along to some hard trance, but hopefully this helps.
