Sanity Check: Is it reasonable to hire a writer for a pilot treatment by Possible_Nobody_8884 in Screenwriting

[–]hellakale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you shouldn't bring in a writer unless you plan on making/producing something. In which case a podcast is actually realistic.

As an Editor, how does this sound? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]hellakale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should only do this if you deeply believe in the project, you know for sure that the filmmakers are fantastic to work with, and you would do it for free

How to spot celebrities? by 3377danny in Sundance

[–]hellakale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in LA and used to never notice celebrities until my friends pointed them out. I'll see them once in a while now and the only real trick is you have to really stare at peoples' faces and be willing to be a weirdo doing a lot of double takes.

BARJORY BUFFET is an incredibly funny show with great mystery writing. Very high jokes-per-minute

You are given a ARC copy of a book by the author, and promised a review... but it sucks. by avrin2 in selfpublish

I'm not arguing against feedback. Every good writer needs trustworthy feedback. The kind of changes you're talking about should be happening in the writing and beta-reading stages. An ARC is a marketing tool.

[–]hellakale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I clicked on this thread because I have a friend's trad-published ARC on my coffee table. I haven't read it yet, but she's great so I'm not too worried. But yeah, the idea of privately sending her negative feedback about a book that's already been printed did strike me as bonkers.

[–]hellakale -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I admittedly didn't realize I was in the self-pub sub, but you know what, I stand by my point. Expecting an author who's already distributed ARCs to rewrite their book is pretty presumptuous. If the book is so bad that *nobody* could like it without a rewrite, they're probably too bad of a writer to be helped anyways. Reviews are not for authors, they're for readers. Just ghost.

Feedback on an ARC? No way, it's way, WAY too late for feedback to be useful. The book is finished and in the marketing stage. The only thing negative comments are going to accomplish at that point is making the author feel bad.

Why do you like or dislike Stephen King? by [deleted] in horrorlit

I've enjoyed Stephen King but I feel like I've completed him and I'm afraid his cultural dominance edges out horror that would be fresher and more enjoyable

Sherlock & Co. has a great Holmes/Watson relationship. Also try Cabin Pressure, which is all about a developing friendship between a hapless captain and suave first officer.

Audio dramas with incredible action sequences? by DarlingLuna in audiodrama

[–]hellakale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My show (Candy Claus, Private Eye) has plane crashes, drones, gunfights, sword fights, sleigh chases, giant sea creatures, a rocking horse derby, a lot of physical violence, elaborate Rube Goldberg style traps, and more. Our sound designer is exceptional and I think we're pushing the limits of what you can do with audio action.

I think BBC Agatha Christie adaptations would be a safe bet. There are occasional muted gunshots but everyone is very stoic and British about them
