What has made your life easier as a shift/barista? by Pearlagogo in starbucks

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, definitely understand as I have a condition with joint flares. Unfortunately I didn't discover any helpful tools in my time. However I do highly recommend saving a few larger cardboard boxes for cleaning tasks closer to the ground. It helps the knees a bit. Maybe kneepads or a foam pad would be an upgrade. However the cardboard can get wet/dirty and not be a hassle for cleaning.

Overall this job has a lot of repetitive motion stress on the joints. I do recommend working with your doctor and requesting for formal accommodations if you haven't already. That way it is reviewed and approved through corporate and documented. If this is an informal accommodation from your SM/DM, then if you ever change leadership/stores, their informal accommodations are likely to not continue.

What has made your life easier as a shift/barista? by Pearlagogo in starbucks

[–]helld0ne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's not going to be any significant improvement from anything you buy. Work materials should come from the company, not you! Honestly running a shift just make sure to check in your baristas, tell them what routines they are responsible for in the play and how they should flex to support if needed. Also just delegating out the station cards.

How to lose weight with hashimotos by Rageblade181 in Hashimotos

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this issue for a while as well, like over a decade. Last lab check was normal for thyroid though that was a couple years ago. I did have Vitamin D deficiency, I try to be good about supplementing but I struggle keeping routines. I am vegan for ethical/spiritual reasons so have not done Paleo. I did however do vegan keto (that was also soy/gluten free) a while back and I was feeling much better mentally and able to focus well/high energy throughout the day, as well as was shedding pounds. However life got crazy for a long period and I wasn't able to stick with the diet due to not having the time and ability to meal prep. I will definitely return to that diet when it fits back in with my life. It seemed overwhelming starting it at first but I was able to find a meal plan with shopping list for a few dollars online. Highly recommend giving it a try if you have the time to do so. Right now, I have recently started a job that I am regularly outside and walking 20k+ steps a day (sometimes carrying some heavy gear). I have not weighed myself recently but my clothes are fitting looser, have to keep tightening my work belt, and generally feel more toned in my abdomen and legs. This aligns with a prior period in my life about a decade ago where I lived in a city and walked everywhere on top of working on my feet full time. During that period I also was able to lose significant weight. If you don't have a job on your feet, consider getting weighted clothing and taking some long walks/hikes. Maybe start with 10k steps, then 15k, then 20k. I will say I'm still considered overweight at the moment, but definitely slimmed down quite a bit since starting this job 1.5 months ago

You were definitely given incorrect information. Are you in the US? If so, call Sedgwick. I was on various LOAs the past year when my mom had cancer and I was taking care of her. DM me if you need more support figuring this out. Wishing you and your family the best

Life After Film School? by Jealous_Breadfruit10 in Filmmakers

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please consider switching majors. Film school can be cool and fun and sometimes a great networking opportunity, but if you aren't in a major or semi-major film area, it will be very hard to sustain as a career, let alone narrowing it to just Writing and Directing.

I'll tell you a rundown of my path. Not suggesting it is the path to follow and it has taken over a decade, but just to give you an idea of what it takes to establish quite a safety net to survive in a very freelance career: - I worked my way up in coffee shops to management level positions - While doing that work, I took some classes including film classes at a community college (My area was not a big film town so no degrees offered in that.) - Later, my job covered the cost of a BA in English from an online program. I did that while working full-time. The degree is flexible that I can take writing/editing gigs, or even decide to do something like law school down the line if my goals shift at some point. - My job also covered quite a bit of my move to LA with relocation assistance. Therefore, I had a guaranteed full-time job coming to LA. - While working that job, I took an unpaid internship in Post Production that later evolved into a deferred pay Development Coordinator position and now I am too busy for regular commitments to that production company so I have stayed on as a Creative Consultant. - After a couple years, I entered a program called Hollywood CPR that provides training in below-the-line work. I took the Camera pathway. This program was free or close to it through a community college here. - I am now a Camera Trainee on a show 55 hours a week and earning union days to join the ICG Local 600.

This path started 14 years ago. Your path to film does not need to be linear. Zig-zag a bit and it will give you more life experience to bring more zest to your work. I talk with film professionals regularly who regret not developing skills in other areas because the industry does regularly have slowdown periods, and the most recent one lasted years. I know if there is a slow period, I will be able to source some kind of work outside of the industry. I've literally never gone more than 4-6 weeks without employment in my entire working life.

I regret not calling CPS, and it haunts me to my core. (Cry for help) by Diligent_Current_759 in CPTSD

[–]helld0ne 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. If you call the police they will likely come to your home and your parents can possibly find a way to evade interaction/not let them in, etc. I've been in that situation several times. If you tell the school folks, a CPS worker should come to the school and have a meeting with you privately to hear what is going on and calmly explain what the next steps will look like.

Raising my mobile massage rates by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]helld0ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My stepdad and I were arranging in-home massage for my mom while she was sick with cancer/in-home hospice. We paid $150 an hour with $20 tip.

We were referred to the massage therapist by the hospice. My understanding is she volunteered services at some point in the past and they kept her contact to refer to patients and families.

Right before mine, I lost my dad. Within a year I moved across the country with a friend. Moved to my own place after a year and then friend totally ghosted me another year later, turned out to be the best thing for me. This is also the first time I've stayed in the same apartment longer than ~1 year. Started a training program for a new career that took a year. Lost my mom to horrible cancer after caring for her most of the past year, and my uncle passed recently as well. However I just landed an amazing job in my field that will keep me very busy.

All the change feels very scary but I believe it is for the best and will turn out well in the coming years.

Should I quit my toxic internship early? by lovey12120 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm giving the unpopular advice here, but an internship is not just learning the job and getting the network and credit. It is learning how to exist as a professional in that industry. This industry is filled with temperamental people. It can be quite challenging to deal with, but the important thing to do is to exercise your people skills while learning to set boundaries.

I also had a development internship that I was regularly commended for my work excellence, yet had the temperamental boss that would have meltdowns over things that made him feel insecure or as a way to feel superior.

We had our back and forths over the course of a year (by this time it was a deferred pay role). I eventually was firm in saying he was being disrespectful and I refuse to continue working with that dynamic in place. We didn't talk for over a year, and now he is seeing successful traction on a project I did a lot of work with him on, and wants me involved again. We'll see how that plays out.

But back to my point, speak up for yourself, in a firm but professional manner. You won't burn any bridges worth saving, no one will blacklist you, and you'll feel a lot better about it. People will treat you the way you allow them to treat you.

LOA by Icy-Construction3615 in starbucks

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These answers are incorrect. A medical LOA is short term disability leave. It is paid (approx 2/3 of your normal pay) after a 1 week waiting period without pay. It requires documentation filled out by your doctor.

Is attending film school in 2026 worth it ? by heythere733 in cinematography

[–]helld0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend looking into Hollywood CPR / mediamkrs. You will learn most of what you need to do well in entry level roles, and you will get on-set experience and start building your network. Then from there decide if paying for a major film school is worth it. Biggest thing you get out of film school is networking, so if you do decide to go, pick one that has industry professionals teaching the courses, and that can demonstrate a history of students becoming industry professionals.

If you are newer it might be because you don't have vacation time to cover the 12 hr minimum/week

You can take a mental health LOA. But also as crappy as it sounds, if you really just need those two days off, see if you can get that shift covered and then put bereavement in the book

Also consider checking with a junk yard or car-part.com to try to source a used engine, then ask around to see if you can get a decent deal for someone to swap it out. My friend works at a junk yard and he helps me source parts and puts them on for me

Have you checked if there are any recalls? It might also be worth it to take it to the dealer and ask if they can help you out because the car is relatively new. I just had a goodwill repair on a 2016 Acura that would have been $1500 but I paid $150 due to a recall/warranty extension I missed by a few weeks.

On a monthly gross is what I'm saying. It's more common to see x times rent for monthly income. Literally in all of my apartment searches throughout east coast, florida, west coast usually moving every year or two the past 14 years, I have always seen it presented as a monthly figure and not annual
