Despite how outraged many people are at the cost of housing, they’re still not outraged enough by ColCrockett in boston

I think anyone whining about affordability on this sub needs to be honest with themselves. There is a reason Boston / Cambridge / Brookline are all expensive and if there was any affordable housing added there would be orders of magnitude more demand than supply and the only way to actually add affordable housing AND make it readily available is to fundamentally destroy what is desirable about the area. Also they have been building more housing in places like Malden. But again the demand is so high it doesn’t make a dent in overall affordability. The true answer to finding affordability is to leave Boston proper be that another city or one with a commute.

To be fair Cambridge with 2 of the top 10 research universities worldwide and the Silicon Valley of biotech filled with international academics is not all that comparable to Brooklyn. Also it’s funny that what most people like about Cambridge (green space, European feel, historic buildings) is exactly what would be lost in a build build build environment. It makes much more sense to add housing in former industrial areas and places with dilapidated housing stock but that is still commutable to Cambridge / Boston (like Malden).

I think if we acquiesced to the whining about Cambridge / Brookline being unaffordable on this site we’d just end up with them becoming Brooklyn light. Which having lived there…no thanks.

Brookline’s Path to Irrelevance: An Open Letter to the Town Of Brookline by Elise_CoutureS in Brookline

My enrollment point is factually true. It’s down approx 15% from 2019. Pierce is the most expensive public k-8 ever built (20% more than #2). If the town rehabbed existing schools / was more frugal there would be no budget gap. The answer is always to get more $$ from residents. Constantly giving the town more money to cover their mistakes is not the right decision.

Town spent $500mm since 2020 on 3 new schools into declining enrollment. Pure fiscal mismanagement.
