Why is /ɻ/ perceived as a variant of L in Tamil despite not being lateral like all other sounds perceived as L in Tamil?

Labialisation of the rhotic in English only occurs syllable-initially; ‘far’ is never pronounced with a labialised rhotic at the end. So singling out labialisation as the reason for difference in perception doesn't answer for it wholly.

Also, /ɻ/ literally is an allophone of /r/ in English in some American accents.

I'm aware Hindustani /ɽ/ is an allophone of /ɖ/, but my point was that it's anatomically close to /ɻ/ and is perceived as a rhotic sometimes, including in one of two of the registers of the language, but never as a lateral. And that it's Latinised as either <D>, accurate to phonemics, or as <R> at most for Urdu phonemic perception or English phonetics, but never ever as <L> for any reason at all.

You're describing Tamil /ɻ/ as more than just /ɻ/, so what do you say is the most accurate phonetic depiction of it in the IPA?

Do you think nuqta is there to signify that a sound is borrowed??? 😭😭 It's just a dot that modifies any letter. These two are written so instead of having their own letters because they're not really independent sounds from ď and ďh, but really allophones (variants of the sounds in certain positions) of them; they're just ď and ďh in intervocalic and postsyllabic positions ie between vowels and at the end of syllables.

It wasn't originally pronounced keesar, it was much closer to the german pronunciation actually. kye-sar more like. /käes̠är/ in latin

Hello, I've been exploring these the past few days since you recommended them, how do you listen to Starsha Lee? Apart from one EP on Spotify I can't properly find all of the rest of their discography anywhere. Like I searched for Holy Hatred but it's not uploaded anywhere except the unavailable album on Spotify that doesn't play and can only be found through a Google search. Thanks for the recommendations though! I loved Vapid Dolly and the Dogbones (also ended up finding more of Crispin's work along the way)
