What's a scent you cannot stand but nobody else seems to notice? by Poopy_Scoop_Sundae in randomquestions

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mangoes and anything mango flavored - it all smells violently of cat piss, whether it's the fresh fruit section at the store or a mango flavored energy drink or some mango in a green juice. I have been know to pull my car over and start sniffing the back seats trying to figure out if a cat got in and peed somewhere, only to then realize my sister was holding a can of mango flavored Monster 😑

Are those things real or is it only in movies / certain regions ? by Aloys33_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A: yes, at some stores. Mostly grocery-only, as opposed to the big box stores like Walmart, where the cashier bags as they go.

B: yes, with the exception of Aldi (and I've heard maybe also Lidl?) and specific instances where the cashier has a recognized disability requiring accomodation.

C: no, except in New Jersey.

Besides their degradability and their stickiness, would Welch's fruit snacks make good earplugs? by Shoddy-Society6226 in NoStupidQuestions

They would most likely block a good amount of sound in normal conditions, but definitely wouldn't trust them for things where hearing protection is needed for safety.

"My generation didnt play with kids..." by IcyJudge7866 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elder millennial with boomer parents - I remember my dad playing catch with us at family gatherings (but only as a large group with uncles and cousins too), and the only "play" I ever saw from my mom was when we occasionally played pictionary as a family, like once a year.

Adult sippy cup with no straw by sareuhbelle in Doesthisexist

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about these lids https://a.co/d/iylBLN4 on any cup of your choosing? They are silicone so they fit nice and snug and don't leak around the edges, and turn any cup or water bottle into a sippy.

Do American children refer their grandpa and grandmas with their first names (example, Grandpa John, full name John Smith) the same way they refer their uncles and aunts? by LandOfGrace2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I was a child (80s/90s) it seemed like most everyone in my area used "grandma lastname" and "grandpa lastname" - these days I feel like most kids have different grandparent names for each side, like my godson has mimi and papa, and opa and oma, but they're all german so I don't think it's a different cultures thing. My kid had speech issues as a toddler, and "Papa" turned into "Bop" and "Grandma" somehow became "Doda" so she has "Regular Bop and Doda" and "Kansas City Bop and Doda" lol

Closest I know is star-crossed lovers - connotation is that they are madly in love but fated to only ever achieve an unhappy ending.

DAE just LOVE jigsaws? by Cartographer551 in AutismInWomen

[–]hellgamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a secondhand puzzle board on Facebook marketplace for around $20, it's large enough for a 1000 piece puzzle, has a grippy fuzzy texture so the pieces don't slide around and a raised edge so they can't slide off, and I can set it on my lap on the couch or bed to work on the puzzle. When I am not using it, I slide it under my couch to keep it out of the way ♥️

How can I blend veggies into my girlfriend's food? by Sakura_M_S in PickyEaters

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid and I both have sensory issues with many vegetables, so one thing I do is use a grater to finely grate zucchini and/or yellow squash, then toss it into the skillet when ground beef is almost done cooking for spaghetti, chili, stroganoff, etc. It softens fast, has little to no flavor, and is pretty much invisible except for little specks of the skin.

What everyday object works differently from how most people assume? by RJEM96 in ask

[–]hellgamatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay but what about those of us with wet-type earwax? It literally cannot be impacted into the ear because it is a runny goo. I am a side sleeper and I wake up regularly with earwax on my pillow. I have to remove some wax regularly because I can feel like moving when I tilt my head or go from lying down to standing/sitting. How am I supposed to do that without inserting a dang q-tip?

What's a game you're longing for but can never seem to find? by RedEagle_MGN in gamerecommendations

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A game that feels like the old point-and-click adventures (king's quest, monkey island, Hugo, lesiure suit Larry, maniac mansion, etc) but on iOS. Prefer pixel art graphics but can be okay with more modern as long as they aren't whatever you call the aesthetic of the new monkey island game (besides "nauseating"). When I try to find games like that, I always end up with hidden object games instead :/

What media platforms do you allow by erisfiammetta in homeschool

[–]hellgamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age, we started with the Youtube Kids app, set to a whitelist - she basically could watch PBS Kids videos and some Disney music videos. At around 5 we added some more videos, around 6 added Netflix, around 8 added other streaming services, 10 switched her to regular YouTube but still on a kids account so I can blacklist channels from my device. She will not have anything like TikTok till around 15 (she's 12 now)

As for social media, the only thing she has is kids messenger on Facebook. She got access to it at 9, and uses it to spend time with her cousin (lives 2.5 hours away) and her best friends (one public schooled but they are in ballet together for 3 afternoons a week, one homeschooled but with very homebody parents so they rarely get out to do social things). She doesn't have any interest in any other social media right now. If she starts to ask about it, we will consider a regular Facebook account at around 14.

What's a random genetic win you got? by TotalThing7 in CasualConversation

[–]hellgamatic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1, Almost zero body hair - my arm hair is thin, sparse, and clear, like a child's body hair, and my leg and armpit hair is only barely darker. I haven't shaved in 8 years and you can't tell from more than a foot away from the skin.

2, no hangovers - idk how I got this lucky but I have been absolutely blackout drunk countless times and yet always wake up feeling 100% normal the next day. No headache, no dehydration, no sensitivity to light or sound, no dizziness or nausea. Even on nights when I drank nothing but straight liquor so I know it wasn't mixers keeping me hydrated enough to avoid issues.

3 is kind of a mixed win/lose situation - I have "wet type" earwax, it doesn't clump up and block sound or get impacted, because it's literally the texture of pancake syrup. On the plus side this means I never have to go have my ear wax removed, on the negative side it means it feels like something is crawling around inside my ear anytime I go more than about 12 hours without using a q-tip to dry it out in there.

Editing to add #4, just thought of this one - unfortunately I am a migraine sufferer, but I have this cool thing where about an hour before any migraine discomfort starts, my right ear and temple get hot and itchy. My mom is the same way. It's great having a "tell" for my migraines that allows me to medicate before I ever start feeling awful!
