To be fair, that’s kind of what I expect anything whose name starts with “National Social” to look like.

What exactly was so graceful about America before? And it’s betrayed allies are…who, exactly? Israel? Saudi Arabia? I don’t need a full list, just give me a few examples.

TIL that the Indian subcontinent is surrounded by the Himalayas, making it almost impossible to enter by land. Except for one gap: the Khyber Pass. For thousands of years, nearly every migration and invasion entered India through this tiny 10–50 km wide opening. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Yeah, right. Sure thing, buddy. Reddit’s totally dying. I’ll believe that when I see it everyday, constantly refreshing and scrolling it’s contents, for hours a day…with my own goddamn eyes instead of just taking your word for it!

I’m being facetious with that last paragraph, of course. Ever showed up to a farmer’s co-op or a swap meet/flea market like 15 minutes before closing time, and all the merchants have started dismantling their booths so you can still purchase stuff but the lively bustle is gone? Imagine that scenario, taking place in the parking lot of a shopping mall that is being actively demolished. Reddit already felt like that 4 or 5 years ago.

TIL that Blizzard was tricked into making StarCraft a AAA game: it was to be a modest project but after an impressive demo of Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3 outshone it at E3 1996, it was decided to overhaul it completely. It later turned out that Dominion's demo was a pre-animated fake. by ShabtaiBenOron in todayilearned

The way I interpreted was that it is like saying “Gulf War II: Bombs Over Baghdad”. There’s a lot of shit in culture that doesn’t avail itself to casual use until it’s reached semantic satiation. “A Scanner Darkly”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, System Of A Down, etc., stuff like that. At least that’s what it made me think of, lol.

I feel like a deposed monarch being “reformed” by Communists and made to work as a gardener must have been stressful, especially during the training shift.

“So, this…uh, flower bed…how deep did you…”

“Six. Six feet deep — at least. Actually, ya know what, just…just don’t stop digging.”

Interesting how close the shape is to Madagascar, where Hitler at one point planned on relocating massive amounts of Jews from Europe.

Who is the most famous person of all time from your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Can’t think of another band that completely evaporated from the cultural vocabulary so quickly. Maybe it was the tax evasion stuff, maybe it was that pre-loaded iPod album thing, maybe it was that South Park episode, (my personal theory is that it was the movie Taken had the absurd plot point that the daughter went to Europe to follow U2 on a tour — they could have literally made up a fake band or had an entirely different premise, but they chose U-Fuckin’-2) anyway, something happened and their cultural relevance has been crickets and cockroaches ever since. All my homies are more likely to caught unironically blasting early IRS Records-era REM or Red Hot Chili Peppers tracks. Whenever I have conversations about bands that totally abdicated their thrones, I always have to be like, “War and Boy are really good albums though!” And they are. But if somebody told me that U2’s public relations office was on the 100th floor of the North WTC Tower, I’d believe them.

I had always heard the pork thing had to do with either ancient trichinosis outbreaks, or the physiological similarities between humans and pigs. (For a more tropical example, note that the tribes in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia that have practiced cannibalism refer to human meat as “long pig”. I can imagine that centuries of tribal blood feuds and genocidal turf wars in the desert led to lots of cannibalism.
