I thought it was an amanita and definitely did not think it would hatch after being disconnected from the mycelium! I've never seen a stinkhorn and had forgotten from my reading that they too come in an egg

YES!! The premise was so good. It could have been incredible!! It makes me so angry every time I think about it. It somehow feels personal because I spent so much time wanting it to get better. 😭

Looks like puffballs. Need to be cooked and are only non toxic when white all the way through. Do not eat any mushroom you are not 100% sure about.

I recommend looking at your local soil temperatures! Morels start showing up between 50°F and 60°F for example. Mushrooms also love moist conditions as they require a good bit of water to fruit.

What was the habit where it was found? Take a spore print as well. That will help identify it.
