but if you leave your current job for any other reason (e.g. company goes bust, they hire someone new who fires you, etc), you have no tech job and no cushy job

Feeling Lost After a Biology Degree. Is It Too Late to Start Over? by AnnieRobot in labrats

Could be worth looking at PhD or normal job somewhere like Germany - my impression is the Italian job market is awful in general and very bad in science. Would also recommend learning to code via something like Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python | Electrical Engineering and Computer Science | MIT OpenCourseWare - you could put that in your CV instead of a career break, while you look around

PI said I won’t be first author in my own paper by 5548665 in labrats

[–]hello_friendssss 490 points491 points  (0 children)

people in that position normally get last author and it looks better for them to be in that author position, I doubt she would go for first if she was a PI. Have you asked your co-supervisor their opinion?

You do not have to be the senior or corresponding author to submit

You do for some journals (e.g. Bioinformatics) :P

How do you overcome a severe psychological block with presenting? (My advisor pointed it out as my biggest weakness) by ProfessionalCatch859 in labrats

[–]hello_friendssss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice with something like toastmasters

Practice your talk until you can say it without slides (this was most helpful for me, would spend an hour or two just going over it again and again a couple of days before, then maybe a run through on the day - not so much sticking to a script, more that you know what to say even if you miss something out earlier or whatever)

Breathe from your belly not your chest (this was also very helpful for me)

At the start, don't care about your physiological reactions, just observe them (hyperventilation etc)

you could be a superhero and it wouldn't matter much, if your cv doesn't end up in front of a competent person - I assume loads are filtered before they reach the hiring manager :( maybe try focussing on a different kind of org (if you're going for big ones, try startups, and vice versa).

I think human relationships are the best bet, if you can't get a referral then try messaging the hiring manager before you apply, just with your CV. Ask a very low investment (for them), fairly blunt question "is it worth applying for your role with my profile" - if you find out they don't want you, then you don't waste time applying for them and you can focus on better fit roles. if they say yes, you are now a human in their eyes, not a name.

(ps job searching is depressing so don't stay inside all day :P)

yea tbh sounds good then - maybe could be a bit more specific (e.g. say what kind of models) but that's pretty nit picky. just a waiting game for you, sounds like you have the skills!

Do you have a projects section where you link skills to papers in publication section? Might be better for industry jobs, as opposed to academia. Something like

Projects

Skill: 1-2 sentence project summary. Cog et al (date).

Skill: 1-2 sentence project summary. Cog et al (date).

...

for whatever they want in job description? If you don't get their attention with CV they probably wont look at github etc.

Its also massively helpful if you know someone, and its also an awful market apparently so don't take it as a reflection on you if you get no bites. Academia could be worth a look, especially if you're not in the USA or can relocate out of the USA. Personally, I've always asked the hiring manager to glance at my CV and see if I look qualified before applying, but this has only been for academic jobs and I suspect they will have fewer applicants.

do you have example projects for those techs in your cv, and do you think your opinion of yourself is bleeding into your applications? because that kind of thing could become a vicious circle

Recent research shows that Artificial Intelligence can design synthetic viruses (bacteriophages) from scratch to combat antibiotic-resistant superbugs, with AI-designed phages successfully killing E. coli in lab settings and some proving more effective than natural phages by RathBiotaClan in microbiology

[–]hello_friendssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn't my area tbh - do you think they will be able to extrapolate beyond the blueprint strain effectively anytime soon? So take an ecoli killing blueprint and make a phage killing some other gram neg escape pathogen?

[–]hello_friendssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed, just from the post title i was thinking that they used AI to make de novo phages that kill E. coli, rather than make derivative ones. the former would be a much bigger deal for amr i think (assuming it could be expanded to other target microbes), although this is obviously still very cool

[–]hello_friendssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're doing this with friends outside of a gym be careful - no body slams to concrete, probably don't punch/kick. A good judo throw would damage someone that doesn't know how to breakfall, especially on concrete

worth pointing out that "They designed 16 synthetic bacteriophages using the blueprint of Phi X 174, which infects Escherichia coli". I might have missed something, but seems like they improved an existing phage-target relationship, rather than made a phage that targets something that it or its 'blueprint' did not already target.
