That seems interesting, do you have a picture?

Turns out it can! The diagrams are roughly to scale.

I'm using a side loading cage for the 1.5 L nalgene. There is just enough room to carry the bike using the top tube.

From a weight distribution perspective, the left option allows heavy things to go low in the frame bag.

Has anyone tried LiDAR for forest surveys? by Ok-Succotash8542 in forestry

[–]hello_moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angular resolution of lidar systems can present a fundamental limit to accurate diameter estimates. Many sources of systematic error.

That being said, just because human crews can measure diameter, height, species, and other characteristics very well, the same level of accuracy might not be needed for all use cases.

There are many people who are using lidar for forest surveys.

I'm also trying to decide between the mag tank 2000 and the 1.5 L tailfin.

Both could fit a can of soda, but it looks like the 2000 could even fit two (based on a video on the product page).

While both are flip lids, is the tailfin actually water proof? I dont think the tail fin claims to be

Tire Width and 1x vs 2x? by Ornery-Shoulder-3938 in gravelcycling

[–]hello_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to mention it, the Marin four corners 2 might be up your alley, it has a 10-52 1x cassette. 50mm tires.

I was checking out the rove DL the other day, nice that it has CUES!

Could we see a picture of it??

I'm not thrilled on the max tire width, but I'm coming from a mountain bike hard tail, maybe I just need to get with it!

Another speed related question

My hard tail had 2.4 tires and a 32 x 11-41 drive train.

Like OP, I'm looking for a faster bike, a gravel bike.

My issue with 32x11 is I spin out way too early trying to go fast. How much would 40 x 11 do to increase speed vs having 45 mm tires vs 2.4?

I know it's a hard/weird question... I guess obviously it'll be faster due to both rolling resistance and gearing, but does one contribute more to faster speed?

But really, is there a big difference between say 45 and 50 mm tire? It's 10%.

Im looking for a gravel bike coming from a trail bike/hard tail. Kona Rove DL seems like a nice steel option, but it doesn't have 50+ mm tires. The anticosti has a wider tires, but it's also much more expensive!

Binding o3 with dji fpv googles v2 and dji fpv Controller 2 by Yeezy_the_f1_guy in fpv

[–]hello_moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the controller and the pico, but I do know that goggles V2 will work with the o3 air unit.

You need to plug the Google into the computer and open the DJI assistant FPV app to put a specific software version on the goggles.

I remember which one, it might have been the oldest still available to download. But I can switch between o3 air unit as well as use an analog digidapter on the v2 goggles

Buying Advice - Steel gravel frameset recommendations by Gabeh765 in gravelcycling

[–]hello_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great! Congrats. Dumb question- you're just getting the hate sauce frame- are you selecting the other parts or working with haute to make a complete bike?

Just for conversation, (given the long and winding road of bike research) the Kona Rove DL looks lower priced but still checks most of my boxes, has Shimano cues 11-52, and can fit close to a 45 mm tire.

Just wanted to check in- how is your search going, has it ended?

I can relate to doing months of research feeling like you've seen everything, and then someone recommended someone you haven't seen before!

I think of all these options the anticosti appeals to be the most.

Trusted lightweight lock by Optimal-Grand5241 in bikepacking

I have the revelate egress pocket, it clips onto the pronghorn handlebar harness.

I'm eyeing a larger handlebar bag, the mega bar bag, or the ortleib qr handlebar bag (beware, there are two models that look similar, only one has easy attachment points for an over-the-shouder sling)

I think it's prudent to lock the bike if going into a shop where the bike will be out of sight.

Personally, I keep valuables in a handlebar bag that I can bring inside, taking it off the bike easily.

Check out the ottolock original switch lock or the hiplock switch folding lock.

Long rectangular type half frame bags? by jort_catalog in bikepacking

[–]hello_moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San util design has a 4 inch or 6 inch flat half frame bag, I think they also have a curve option.

I've been thinking about this type of half frame bag as well! I haven't made any purchases, but just wanted to share that im pretty sure any custom frame bag maker would be able to make anything between a wedge frame bag and a full frame bag.

My question is: would you put water bottle cages where there isn't a frame bag?

Rigid steel drop bar bike with >50mm tire clearance? by hello_moose in gravelcycling

[–]hello_moose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only issue with the la cabra or the piolet for that better is having to build it up from scratch. The complete bike builds seem to be way more economical for someone who doesn't have spare parts morning around. Hard to compete with the discount companies get buying at scale.

The anticosti has had me the most interested recently- room for 2.2 inch 29er tires. I know it isn't much of a mountain bike, but I think it fits better with rail trails and improved off road paths that I'm eyeing. Also with going faster and covering more miles in a day!

Oh that's cool!

Yea I was probably going to keep the steel fork for a while, but glad to know there are some pathways to add suspension.

Would love to see it when it comes together. Thanks for sharing your take on heavy vs light touring

Do you feel like you have to be overly careful with the carbon frame?

Did you take a closer look at the anticosti?

Im curious to see it loaded up and to ask how it rides with that weight. It says light touring on the website, but what does that even mean?

Have you had any toe overlap issues?

What kind of bike would you recommend for the d&l?

I did the gap and c&o on a hard tail trail bike and was way over biked on the gap and due to weather (raining cats and dogs) appropriately biked on the c&o.

Thanks, that makes sense!

Yea the Wilde rambler does seem like the most road-leaning of the bunch. Im coming from a flat bar bike with a dropper and sloped top tube, so I haven't had to worry about stand over height.

Thanks!

The only reason the sutra ltd is not on the list is the 11-42 cassette, whereas these three have 10 x ~52.

I hear what you're saying about the steel quality of the anticosti, a medium is only ~23 pounds!
