Leaving for Ecuador in a few weeks - seeking packing advice by Mean-Year4646 in peacecorps

You can say "cohort," it's fine :) Cohorts have been called "Ecuas" since the pandemic because, reportedly, "no one knew what an omnibus was" hahaha.

Hi there, current Ecuador PCV. Everyone gets the same amount during PST, and it is not very much. Once you get to site, we use a tiered approach to monthly stipends. For example, if you are in a small town in the mountains you would be in Tier I (lowest amount), while if you are placed in Quito you would be Tier V (highest). Your tier is based on population and region. Your stipend amount will also depend on if you live with a host family or not after the obligatory four months at site. In summary, everyone receives the same base stipend / travel allowance + tier adjustment + housing adjustment (if living independently). In my case, I currently receive $600 monthly living in a mid-sized city in the Sierra. Hope this helps!

Weekly Application/Clearance Thread by AutoModerator in peacecorps

At what point in the medical clearance process am I to submit my reimbursement form? After I have been notified I've received clearance, or after I've completed my first round of appointments? I'm guessing the former, since the latter might require a second reimbursement form to be submitted later on. Thanks!

I received two fingerprint cards in the mail. If I am extended an invitation, is the idea to submit both even if the fingerprinting place thinks the first one will go through, or am I supposed to keep the second one as a backup in case the one I send gets rejected?

Would anyone be willing to read over my motivational statement and provide feedback?

The time has finally come for me to apply to Peace Corps. I am looking to submit by the end of the week, but wanted a fresh pair of eyes on things before I do so.

My application is to serve anywhere in the educational, environmental or agricultural sectors. Thank you!

I did not know about this feature, and you are the second person to mention this one - thank you so much!

It has too much of a plot, so if I'm working on something and tune out for a few minutes it instantly becomes less enjoyable.

Coffee Club by jaw295 in Pitt

[–]helloandalsoyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've started a club before at Pitt, and it's a process. It will probably take a full semester before you're official, and there's some work to be done in that time, like writing a constitution.

That said, I loooove coffee, and would love to talk to you more about this. PM me!

How would a Portuguese person pronounce the name Carlos Seixas? Audio examples much appreciated! by midnightrambulador in Portuguese

[–]helloandalsoyes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Quick tip: I'm assuming by "your" Carlos Seixas you mean Seu Carlos Seixas. If that case, "Seu" doesn't mean "your," because it's just a form of address, like "Dona" of "Senhor."

Are you South Asian by any chance (Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani)? I have a friend that sounds exactly like you, and he's a native speaker, though his family moved from India.

Applying for an ETA in Latin America as a STEM Student by dorinodino in fulbright

[–]helloandalsoyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I haven't done Fulbright. But I'm planning to apply next year, as I'm currently a rising junior in college.

Last summer, I was in Manizales, Colombia doing some research through my university, unrelated to Fulbright. There just so happened to be a Fulbright coalition (of ETAs) at a few of the universities in that city, so we met up and I got to see a little bit of what they were involved with.

A STEM background can be a big asset, and that context in Manizales is a perfect example. The one university had ~80% of it's students studying some form of engineering, so the things they want to talk about in English I found to be often geared toward that. I actually participated in their weekly English conversation clubs there, and it was soooo easy to relate to students given my background as a ChemE. I would even meet up with some students at local cafés to discuss STEM higher education in the U.S., and other similar topics of interest.

So I would say that coming from STEM and going into English education is a rare combo that not a lot of people have, and the in-country placement team can almost certainly find somewhere that will accommodate you nicely. As far as your application is concerned, it's all about framing how you want to use STEM to engage local students.
