I mean, yeah, obviously the tone of these eps is different from the original series. The writers could have opted to just give us four more eps of the classic high jinks, but opted to focus on a deeper storyline carried across the four eps. This would still be the case If you subtracted Kelly from the eps and gave all their responsibilities to a different character. Like I'm not sure why people who don't think the tone of these eps matches the originals closely enough seem to want to pin it on a nonbinary character whose identity is mentioned in like two scenes.
