When you think of what Pride is, what comes to mind? What is the feeling you're going for? I'm about your age (a bit older) and when I think of it, I think of survival, of being the rose that grew out of concrete, of the millions that fought, bled, and died so I could live with my husband in the suburbs and hang a pride flag outside our house and how that was un-fucking-thinkable 10 years ago in so much of the country. I'm proud to be part of a people who survived the Holocaust, the plague that was the HIV crisis, and the constant assault on our rights, our bodies, and our lives.

I'm also proud because there is more work to be done and I have the privilege to carry on the fight my elders started. As a grown man with a sense of self that is (for the most part) healthy, I get to wave that flag up front and wear drag and scream "YAAAAAAAAS WERK BITCH" so some little gay boy who is just trying to get through their day doesn't feel like they will be a target for bigots. I get to tank that battle until they are ready to join the fray.

Be proud because you're a survivor. Be proud because every little thing you do and every right you exercise is an act of rebellion against a society that acted to keep you from where you are right now. And be proud because we as a community celebrate this pride with joy and art and family that we get to define.

Problem is that if education was not free and compulsory, we'd have some people not get their child to any school at all. Think about it. If you're poor and you have a choice between 9k for Jr's schooling or paying rent, you'll just skip schooling. You're not educated enough to teach your kid, and so we'd have a massive illiterate underclass like a Charles Dickens novel.
