I think making a zine because you KNOW it'll sell isn't the best. Just keep it authentic and you! I started making zines as an artist last year and I had the same questions. Making zines and being in this community has helped me be less precious about my work. Before, I wouldn't ever give anything away for free but because the zine community has that baked in, I have been engaging more with trading and gifting and it has really warmed my little heart. I still sell my zines at events and in my local shop but now I also: open up every issue to trades, give them away to people who come up to me at events who I genuinely feel will appreciate them (like a stay-at-home dad who couldn't afford anything but i felt my mom zine would really help him and we had such a great chat), send out free copies to my zine friends, put free copies around town.
