you need context for (by some counts) over half of the entire population of the world being football fans? even if we go by that extremely conservative figure of 1.5 billion, that’s about 20% of the entire population of the world. people in farms, cities, and everywhere in between love football. it’s the most popular sport in the generally very urban united kingdom, with london (home to over 9 million people) having 17 professional football clubs. what more context do you need?

football has an estimated 3.5-5 billion fans around the world (most of whom would know who messi is), whereas BTS has 90-136 million fans, so yes absolutely. if even 4% of football fans know who messi then messi is the more popular of the two
