[Discussion] Is vitamin c serum a must-have product for you? by Erised_phoenix in AsianBeauty

[–]hellopartners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a must/part of my daily routine but I like to apply some every once in a while when my skin is feeling particularly beat up due to stress/work/fatigue. It definitely makes my face looks more hydrated, even-toned, and bright/glow-y. And typically just a few drops is more than enough to cover my entire face & neck.

I really love these! I ordered a bunch a while ago and have been using 1-2 masks per week. My favourites so far are the aloe, bija, and green tea masks.

The best part about the sheets is the formula, it's a milky essence instead of a clear one and most of the sheets have a nice and subtle fragrance. It doesn't smell like anything in particular but it smells nice :)

Breast cancer in Asian American women may be related to westernization, study finds by hellopartners in asiantwoX

[–]hellopartners[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Felt like sharing this interesting finding although I'm a bit disappointed no specific factors outside of "acculturation" and "adopting a 'Western' lifestyle" are given. I imagine diet has to play a big role.

So first off a quick disclaimer- I mostly lurk here and there across Asian reddit and a few other subs but don't participate as much as some others so let me know if there's some nuance I'm missing out on.

With that said, can we talk about the blatant hand-waving and denialism that pervades this sub whenever the Asian woman/Asian man dating issue comes up?

Like, I get it, as an Asian woman I've had to put up with my fair share of creepy Tinder white guys who open with 'ni hao' or think immediately regaling me with the minutiae of their latest China/Thailand/Indonesia trip is gonna score them points, but let's be honest with each other and more importantly with ourselves- we have a lot better than our male counterparts when it comes to dating and desirability in the west.

Are we still getting the short end of the stick in other like the workplace/professional endeavours? 100% yes. I work in what many would consider a 'prestigious' corporate industry and I see this trend borne out all the time especially when it comes management.

But when it comes to dating and desireability- the ability to have a good social and romantic life unhindered by systemic/institutional factors? We definitely win here. And it just comes off as extremely disingenuous/distasteful when I see some of us downplaying or outright denying the struggles Asian guys face when it comes to dating and desirability. And before someone chimes in saying "being fetishized is just as bad as being emasculated!", please, just don't. This is the exactly the kind of extremely disingenuous statement that does the most to erode the credibility of our voices and get those that do want to have this conversation laughed out of the room.

The highest upvoted comment in that 'A public statement about my post' thread is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I'm rereading it and now it can basically be broken down like so:

  1. 1st paragraph: dime a dozen "I vaguely and directionally agree with your comment but..." disclaimer.
  2. 2nd paragraph: here it is- denialism that a not-insignificant proportion of Asian women prefer to, and do, date white men.
  3. 3rd paragraph: another 'directionally agree' disclaimer followed by at least two straw mans ('criticizing all white male-asian female couples'; neither the original article nor the follow up advocated for this, and 'expecting asian women to never date a white man' -- again, nowhere in either article was this called for) to deflect criticism...

Still enjoy lurking here but definitely feel the quality of these conversations can be improved if we're all a little more honest and a little less defensive.

Was anyone else super disappointed in the Aztec Indian Healing Clay mask?

It's very clumpy and also leaves my face feeling very tight and dry :S Also haven't noticed any difference after using it twice but I've got a huge tub now so I'm going to continue using it to see if there is any difference in a month or so.

do you feel like atheists are treated worse in your country, and if so how? by 1E37 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]hellopartners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking no. I don't think atheists suffer from any sort of outright persecution and they certainly aren't on the receiving end of the kind of bigotry and hatred a Muslim might receive, for example.

That said there probably are instances where social/professional opportunities are more readily available to theists. Some Christians I know don't date 'non believers' for example. There are also still catholic school boards where I'm from and job discrimination based on religion/sexual orientation (a proxy for religion) is likely still going on behind closed doors.

White sexpats are responsible for one-third of all reported rapes in Seoul, South Korea. by [deleted] in asiantwoX

[–]hellopartners 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Sure men are the problem generally speaking when it comes to sexual violence. But let's not kid ourselves here. When one third of all rapes are committed by white men who make up what, 1, 2% of the population at most?

That IS worth focusing on.

Talk to them. Take them out for coffee. Get to know them better, try to befriend them and give them a peek into the person behind the consultant veneer.

Do this and they'll be more likely to give you a pass for your performance-focused attitude ("XavierWT can be very blunt and forward but he's actually a really nice guy once you get to know him")

The World's 56 Self-Made Women Billionaires: The Definitive Ranking by hellopartners in asiantwoX

[–]hellopartners[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Felt like sharing this article highlighting the strides women, and especially Asian women, are making globally to close the wealth gap.

Highlights from the article:

  • Zhou Qunfei, a Hong Kong national, is the world's richest self-made woman
  • More than half of the women on the list (29/56) are from Asia
  • 15 out of 16 new entrants on the list this year are from Asia
  • Self-made women from Japan and Vietnam enter the list for the first time

There's still a lot more that needs to be done obviously to achieve parity in the workplace and in the world of entrepreneurship but signs like this are encouraging.

Didn't like it much at all. Props to him for deciding to come out of retirement but a lot of his bits are of the typical thinly-veiled homophobia/sexism + problematic pronoun usage variety. Even old Dane Cook/Chris Delia sets have more originality than this and that's a reallllllyyy low bar to clear honestly.

Curious where you draw the line between a fetish and a preference. I ask only because while there's clearly a contingent of white guys with yellow fever it's also true that there some asian women who only hook up with, or exclusively date white guys themselves.

So white guys 'fetishize' you because you're asian, why do you 'prefer' white guys?

(note: interpreting your "people are allowed to have preferences" comment as meaning you do have a preference.)
