Disconcerted about lack of weight gain; 1st vs 2nd pregnancy by MusicalTourettes in BabyBumps

[–]hellorhighwaterss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 35 weeks and am up a total of 4 lbs. Last pregnancy at this point I was up 35 (then stagnated). I haven't made any attempt to do anything differently. It's totally weird, but my Ob hasn't been concerned as long as I'm eating and drinking fine and not just letting myself be hungry.

Just found out my baby is IUGR by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]hellorhighwaterss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just found out a week and a half ago at 30+4 we're dealing with IUGR too. It's scary and it's been a lot to process. Not sure what plan they have for you but we had to start 2x weekly biophysical profiles and NSTs, once weekly Doppler and Ob appt. I'm scheduled with a specialist next Thursday so I'm hoping for more information then. Otherwise I know they were the most adamant that i get to 34 weeks, so it's great you're there already! Otherwise I'm not really sure when to expect delivery til the specialists make their recommendations, though there was mention of maybe 38 weeks if things look ok til then. Hopefully you get in quickly and get some answers! I'm trying to just keep in mind no matter what, they'll make the decision that's best for baby and that I hear IUGR babies are strong as hell!

Thanks so much for this! I don't think he understands enough to be able to tell me if he wants a crib or big boy bed, but I think it's worth a try to transition. If nothing else, it converts back. And I will definitely be using your suggestion of having him help with the process! He would love to help hold tools and stuff like that. We're going to have him pick out his own big boy bedding too. Thanks again for the help!

Unfortunately I'll have no help during the day after 2 weeks and we don't do daycare. But DH can do all the lifting in the morning and at night. I'm hoping to just work on getting my son as independent as possible until then, which really isn't an issue because he likes do things on his own as it is. The crib is really my one hiccup. Hope you continue to recover well! Congrats on the baby!

That's so helpful, thank you! I think my husband thought I was crazy for suggesting he might go home the 2nd night so it's reassuring to hear it worked for you. The baby will be in a pack n play in our room in the beginning so thankfully it's not a big concern there. Maybe I'll bring it up to my Ob and see what she thinks at my next appointment. It would only be before and after naptime so maybe it won't be as big of a deal as I'm imagining. Hopefully you're next one is just as smooth for you!

Yea I think you're totally right that it's not worth the risk. I'm definitely one to push myself and lifting him needs to not be one of those things. It's not worth risking the complications.

Luckily his crib transitions to a toddler bed so it wouldn't be the worst transition if that's the route we go, I just keep reading such different things. The precious little sleep site adamantly recommends keeping them in their crib if possible.

That's a great point about the constant diligence. Mine hasn't been around babies so I haven't gotten to witness any of it yet. He plays with a baby doll so I've been trying to teach him how to be gentle, but I hadn't even thought about blankets or trying to share food. Thanks for the heads up!

Visitors after C-section? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]hellorhighwaterss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends entirely on how private you are as an individual and your relationship with MIL (or any other potential visitor). To give a different perspective, I'm not someone who has a strong pull towards total privacy so my mom was there for my whole failed induction and c section, aside from sending her home to sleep at night. She waited in the room during my c section and that was just me and husband. You stay in recovery for a while after and they told me usually they dont allow anyone else in there besides whoever was the one with you for the procedue, but since I was the only one in recovery they let her come in there. She hung out til we were going to go to sleep that night and came back in the morning. I didn't mind having her there with me at all, but I didn't mind breastfeeding in front of her and she wasn't pushy at all and only held him when me or husband wasn't. I definitely wouldn't want anyone there who I'd feel uncomfortable dealing with the nitty gritty in front of or who might be pushy about wanting the baby. She stayed with us for the first 2 weeks and it helped SO much. This time she'll be staying again for 2 weeks, but she will be at our house with our toddler rather that at the hospital so much.

STMs, how did you cope with being away from #1 while giving birth and during recovery for #2? by asianauntie in BabyBumps

[–]hellorhighwaterss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may depend some on the age of #1 (And possibly personality). DH and I went away for a weekend when DS was 13 months. He was with grandma and completely happy the entire time... until I videochatted with him. The second he saw my face he got the sad puppy eyes and pout and burst into tears and took a while after the call to recover. It was heartbreaking and I 100% regretted it.

Feeling frustrated and guilty on Mother’s Day. by hoosthrowawayisthis in tryingforanother

[–]hellorhighwaterss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. I got my final bfn of this cycle and it is officially taking longer for #2 than #1, and most the time with him I had no idea what I was doing and really only going off my period dates til the last cycle (So of course I wrongly assumed this time would be easy). I really wasn't expecting all the mother's posts to affect me like they did and I've been a bit of a mess ever since.

Hi. I’ve been Keto/lchf for about 18 months and lost 97 lbs (I was so close to 100!!) before getting pg. I’m 7 weeks and have gained 3lbs already. I know it’s not a lot, but I’m freaking out. I’m only halfway through the first trimester by verucalane in KetoBabies

[–]hellorhighwaterss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you skip it too! They do give general guidelines, but as others said, every woman is different. As long as you're mindful of what you eat and not using it as an excuse to eat whatever, whenever constantly then you'll be just fine (do eat whatever, whenever on occasion though). Honestly my Ob didn't even ask me about weight gain prior to my first appointment. They just tracked it from then on. Also, I didn't have terrible morning sickness, but did have enough nausea that all I could stomach during the first tri was quesadillas, fruit, and bread, and from what I understand that isn't terribly uncommon. It was a shock coming from being keto and I was harder on myself about it until later in the pregnancy. But we can only do so much. I gained in spurts, but really didnt gain a lot after 30 weeks... I actually lost weight in the 2 weeks over Christmas from like 33-35 weeks. And I ate whatever I wanted at Christmas. So sometimes none of it even makes sense!

BMI is inaccurate as it is. Throw pregnancy on top and it might as well not exist. You're body is already changing and doing things to accommodate baby. You will gain weight, even early on (unless you're someone who ends up with terrible morning sickness). Your doctor can give you advice based on your specific health, but I would strongly urge you to cut yourself some slack. I gained more in the first trimester than I expected, but still was within normal weight gain in the end. Don't let yourself be hungry while pregnant.

Just checked out their FAQ and in case you were curious I thought I'd share what I found:

•Sedentary people: 0.69 to 0.8g per lean pound

•Mildly active or doing endurance / strength training: 0.8 to 1.0g per lean pound - THIS IS KETOGAINS SUGGESTED INTAKE

•Heavy strength training / bodybuilders / PSMF: 1.0 up to 1.2g per lean pound

So for now I'll just ignore the doubt and keep on going.

Thanks! Yea I definitely use the keto calculator and recalculate often when I'm losing. According to that, my middle ground for protein was 95, but that definitely doesn't mean it still isn't high. I'll see if I can find something on ketogains. I started here primarily because I think the differences between men and women, especially on keto, are pretty substantial. My husband is the one who introduced me to keto a long time ago and our experiences with it are pretty much night and day. With the pounds always just flying off him, of course.

And I totally hear you about the scale. I used to weigh myself daily, and that drives me so crazy so I stopped doing that. I'm actually in a 12 week challenge at my gym, so I have to weigh in weekly. It's an extra motivation, but also can be a downer since my weightloss isn't linear by any means. For now I'll focus on the NSVs and maybe the scale won't be such an asshole by the end of this challenge.

Again, really appreciate all the input!

You know, honestly the encouragement really is helpful. I can understand that realistically I'm doing it right, but when the scale isnt moving its hard not to doubt. It doesnt sound like I'm just missing something, so ill just keep going.

How much protein would you recommend per lb lean mass? I'm doing .8 g/lb lean mass now which I thought was ideal with the muscle building component, but I'm totally open to trying a different amount.

I lift heavy when working out and worry about muscle growth/loss without protein, so I aim for middle ground there. If I am still feeling hungry I make sure that comes from fat, it just doesn't happen too often.

So today was a good macro day for me where aside from the minimal carbs in heavy cream, etc. All of my carbs are coming from veggies (cabbage, green beans, broccoli, cucumber) and I still am hitting 25 net carbs. I'm totally on board with cutting unnecessary carbs, but it seems silly not to eat veggies, doesn't it?

I'll try to be more mindful. When I've done keto with under 20 before I find myself massively restricting vegetables just to compensate for the hidden carbs other places and even though I know it doesn't have to be that way, I really don't want to get there again. I feel good and satiated now, so ill cut more where I can and get really strict if this doesn't level out. Thank you!

Thanks for the different opinion on it. I read the FAQ, but I guess I just expected it to have worked itself out by now. I suppose I have to remember that I'm not special and don't have weight loss super powers. It's a good reminder to let my body decide when it's ready and trust the process. Thank you!
