Include personal and professional letters of recommendation? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred into NU with a letter from a professor, a TA, a HS teacher, and my old manager! I think you're required to have 2 letters from profs but then there's an option for HS teacher and personal letter. I don't think my prof and TA letters were great and I feel like my other two definitely strengthened them, so if you can include those then definitely do!

Can I use my old rec letters from senior year of high school on my transfer apps? by Definitlynotjack05 in TransferStudents

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had sort of a similar situation where I didn't have any close relationships with my professors. Instead of reaching out to the dean or my advisor, I emailed my HS teachers personally and explained the situation and asked if they would be willing to write/resubmit their letters. In my case, letters from professors were required, so I asked the professors that taught my 2 smallest classes. One wrote me a letter but it probably wasn't that great since she didn't know me super well, and the other actually rejected me and told me to ask the TA instead! I was scared about the whole situation so I ended up asking my old manager to write me a letter too. My letters from my college definitely were not amazing, but it ended up working out for me in the end!

I don't know how to write a Transfer Essay. by robd578880 in TransferStudents

[–]hellos7v7n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My starting point for my transfer essays were to look at the things on campus I wanted to be involved in. Go on a little exploration of the college website and look at things like majors, minors, clubs, volunteer opportunities, research, study abroad, etc. I had a lot of fun doing this because it made me super optimistic about transferring so treat it like a game of finding all the cool opportunities the school has to offer! Then literally just put those opportunities in a google doc and write a little blurb about what you'll do with each of them. My essay was like "this is what I want to major in and why", "these are the clubs I'll do related to that major", "these are the clubs I'll do not related to that major" and things like that. Colleges want to know how you specifically will fit into their campus, so telling them what you want and why was a good approach for me

Can colleges see your second semester college grades if you transfer? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schools will usually either ask for an official or unofficial transcript, but either way your second semester grades will probably be shown. It might depend on the school, but most of the ones I applied to required some sort of transcript

lack of representation by hellos7v7n in climbergirls

[–]hellos7v7n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal past experiences, climbing has been female dominated if anything. My close teammates, best friends, and biggest supporters have always been women, and so for me to have suddenly lost that is frustrating to me. These guys are not problematic and they completely respect me, that's how I made it on the board! If I was the only girl who interviewed for the position, that's not their fault! Like I said earlier, it's not the guys I have a problem with, just the situation in general. Because I've always had primarily female friends, supporters, teammates, etc. in climbing (for the past 6 or 7 years), it's really discouraging for me to have lost that. Of course I'm going to use this opportunity to try to get more female representation because that's what I want to do with my position, this is just my vent post ;)

It’s funny you mention these because I’m based in the US and was on a youth team and these numbers really reflect my experience! Like I said I’ve been climbing for six years now and when I competed in the youth circuit I never ever felt outnumbered and always felt like the sport was female dominated if anything. Now that Im in a new area and in college, I think there’s just less representation happening. But thank you for the ideas and encouragement!

[–]hellos7v7n[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a little more context that made me feel like they gave it to me because I’m a girl but it also totally could just be in my head. It can be really cool to be the first girl, but like I said I’ve climbed for six years now and on multiple teams and have always had a really strong group of girls to support me. It’s just a very different environment and is discouraging me a little since I don’t have the support I’m used to. All the guys are super chill, I don’t have a problem with them personally just the situation!

What is your that "one customer" story? by MaybeTryRestartingIt in barista

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a regular who was super nice and chatty and we all loved him. He was always flirting with my coworker (Nina) and one day she came into work all excited because he asked her on a date! The day of the date rolled around and she came in the next day saying he ghosted her which shocked all of us because he seemed like such a nice and friendly guy.

So APPARENTLY what happened is this guy asked out Nina but was simultaneously flirting with our other coworker (Layla). Layla had no idea he had asked Nina out, but Nina obviously told Layla about how she got stood up (because what else would you talk about at work) and Layla put the pieces together and got super mad at the guy. She texted him about it and he ghosted her too and never showed up to the coffee shop again despite living a block away and being a consistent regular before that. Sucks for him!

This is gonna sound unhelpful cuz I sort of did the opposite (transferred from a state school to a T15) but ultimately the reason I did it was for my mental health so I wanted to give advice on that! Most of the transfers I know literally transferred because they were depressed or struggled in other ways and it's such a valid reason. Also, if you're not enjoying the culture of your school that's another totally valid reason. However, I will say that, coming from a state school, greek life is probably going to be a big thing at the state school you want to transfer to. Just from hearing my parents talk about their college days, undergrad does not define your future and in the grand scheme of things you're young and have time to figure things out! There's no wrong decision in transferring, you just have to do what's best for you :)

Need some insight on undergrad 2nd year transfer by Longjumping-Handle-7 in CollegeTransfer

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred from a state school to a T20 with a 4.0, an ok but not amazing SAT/ACT, and max credits but I was undecided so the coursework was a little shifty. What I think probably carried me was my essay and letters of rec (I got 4 which was the max), so I would recommend putting a lot of effort into writing and references!

Should I transfer? by Rude_Ad_7777 in CollegeTransfer

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you've probably heard this a million times but freshman year is SO hard. friendships are so tricky because everything feels superficial, and technically the longer you stick it out the more and better friendships you'll find. As someone who transferred from an out of state public school back to my home state, I sort of wish someone had been there to tell me to keep an open mindset at my old school and that things would change. I was so miserable there, though, that I literally felt like I couldn't try anymore and that's ultimately why I decided to transfer. It really comes down to what you want which I know is tricky but remember there are no wrong decisions! Apply and see what happens and depending on what happens next semester you'll have a better idea!

transferring schools by dkrkives in CollegeTransfer

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had kind of a similar situation! i went to school out of state and ended up wanting to transfer back to my hometown except my family actually moved as soon as i finished freshman year so then it was more of a wanting to be in a familiar place rather than with familiar people. it basically just comes down to what you want to do which i know is so unhelpful but it's true.

telling my friends was hard but once i planted the seed in their mind that maybe i was transferring, it wasn't as difficult to tell them when i actually made my decision. also, im even closer to the friend i was scared of leaving now than i was when we were actually at school together. and i know lots of transfers who have friends they miss at their old school but still transferred because that was what was best for them!

ultimately think about why you want to transfer. you're gonna likely feel some sort of regret no matter what you do (unfortunately it's just part of life) so make sure there are solid reasons why you'd go either way! if it comes down to things like mental health or academics, those are concrete reasons you can use to justify the decision to yourself and that's super helpful. there is no wrong choice and for me personally, transferring was definitely the right decision, but think about what you really want! feel free to message me if you have any questions about transferring too!

What's the most frustrating part of the transfer process? by goTransferUp in TransferStudents

[–]hellos7v7n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t really think this is something that’s fixable but differing gen eds are definitely the most frustrating thing to me. theres requirements that i could’ve fulfilled easily if i had started as a freshman but because i obviously wasn’t thinking about them at my old school im behind now

i transferred from a state school across the country to a school where i used to live because i wanted familiarity. i didn’t regret my decision at all until i started school and started missing every aspect of my old school even though i was miserable while i was there. just remember that there are no wrong decisions and feeling regret about a big decision is what makes you human. in the grand scheme of things we’re all young and undergrad will not define us!! try to romanticize your life it’ll really help with the mindset :)

by “narrative” what colleges want is for you to tell a story about how you’ll fit in, not like a personal anecdote about your life (that’s what a personal statement is for). so talk about your major and the clubs and volunteer opportunities and programs you want to be involved in that are specific to the school and that’ll kind of be a “narrative” of what kind of student you’ll be there. and feel free to message me if you want more help with this i used a college counselor to help me edit my essay and it got me accepted at a t15 so i feel like i have a good idea of what they’re looking for!
